I wonder if anyone can help me or give me some advice on how to get rid of scar tissue. Frazer cut his leg in May and is still left with a bald lump the size of a 50 pence piece on his back fetlock. I have tried massaging it, aloe vera and im now trying cornucrescine but still nothing has changed I worry that if it doesnt dissapear it means he is unshowable with this blemish. Any advice is much appreciated.
I will try and take some pictures this afternoon to show you.
Thanks

Hi Taylor
I had a mare who had a lump like that you describe and I used the blue copper sulphate cystals on it and now you wouldnt know it had been there. Also recently I have used honey on a cut that had a bit of proud flesh and again you wouldnt know it had been there. A friend had also been told to use honey on a cut and the healing of the cut was perfect. I didnt realise that honey had so many healing properties in it. It is now in my grooming box. Jackie |

Thanks everyone for your advice, think I will try the copper sulphate do you know where I can get it from? Is copper sulphate different to blue copper sulphate crystals?
Jackie I have heard of using honey before, doesnt it have to be a certain type of honey though?
Heres a couple of pictures so you can see what it looks like now.

Hi
where do you get these copper sulphate crystals from and how do you apply them to the problem area? i.e. do you wash the area in a solution, massage a paste into the skin, apply and bandage?? Can anyone who's successfully used these, please let us know? Are you able to apply if the skin is broken at all?
Thanks guys!! |

Yes, it would be good to know all of the above as im getting the Physio to come and look at some scar tissue on one of my mares and this seems alot less expensive if it works!! |

Copper sulphate is a caustic agent used historically to burn back or debride granulation tissue. This does not appear to be your horse's problem as the skin appears to be healed. I would be careful with the use of copper sulphate crystals - best ask your vet if they are appropriate in your case. |

Hi Clare, Do you mean Camrosa? I have heard mixed reviews on this product some people swear by it others say dont go anywhere near the stuff so im left a little bit bewildered.
I know its nothing large and unsightly but its still there I dont think the pictures show clearly the lump I should have taken the picture from another angle. I do feel he would be penalised if he is to be a show horse. Wont it go against him when it comes to leg markings? |

we used Camrosa on proud flesh on a stallion we once owned and his legs swelled to twice or even three times their normal size!!! The poor fella couldn't even bend them to walk!! We had to get the vet out to give him an anti-hystamine (steroid) injection which brought the swelling down but i will NEVER use that stuff again! |

I have heard that Emu Oil is supposed to be very good - although I have never tried it myself!
Hope you find something that works! |

Hi Claire
we got the copper sulphate crystals (which are blue) from the vet who said just put them straight onto the leg. We did this and put a pad over (to stop them falling off) then a bandage round the leg. If I remember right only had to do it a couple of times, but the flesh was still freshly proud.
Hi Taylor
I thought it had to be a special honey, but when I used it I just put on what I had in the cupboard as I thought it couldnt do any harm and low and behold it didnt it worked and again only did it once as the flesh was new.
Hope this helps.

YES thats the stuff!, i dont know weather go against you but my friends horse was burnt in a stable fire over 80% of her body, and to look at its unsightly (its like rippled skin) but she was 5th at devon county last year in the hunter class, the judges always just ask what happened and judge around it, but she was told by a producer if it doesnt affect movement and flexion its just unsightly and they will judge around it. |

Scar tissue is (as many of you know!) - a subject close to my heart.
My gelding severly injured his leg in 2002, (6 weeks after he won the futurity!)
We were told by leahurst that optimistically we might get him sound again but that he would always have a "large & prominant Scar"
Our Vet Sliced the proud flesh "off" every ten days. once we were down to a "healed" scar (about 6 months ish), I then massarged it twice a day with Aloe vera Gel, at first i saw no difference, and it would have been easy to give up, - (but that isn't in my nature!) any how I continued for over 12 months and eventually we were left with just a Hairless area, (with very little thicken scar tissue)
I think i can say tim has successfully returned to the ring!
this picture shows timmys leg 9 weeks after he did it!
a few months later
& returning to the show ring - 2 yrs later (he was 2nd at Malvern this day, - He had been 4th the year before, and then won in 2005!)
& His scar / leg is even better now adays - quite an area of it does grow hair now, - although he does manage to knock it from time to time in the field!. I still occasionally massarge it (pressing on quite hard with my thumb, and moving the top layer around) if it is getting lumpy or dried up.
There is always hope! and only once - (the year after at Malvern) has a judge ever said they have put him down for it (the foriegn judge was judging on points and said he had had to deduct some for his scar!)

Clare, from a judges point of view - what you are showing on your photos is a blemish and should not hinder your boy in the showring AND by next show season I would very much doubt anything would be evident.
As the injury is healed I would personally just rub aloe vera into it - you will be amazed how easily it will reduce and hey you have the whole winter ahead |

I would love to know what actualy works...
My boy had an awful accident in 2003 which not only left his knee badley scared but also he got presure sores from the bandages which resulted in proud flesh... The stuff we did use from the vet was a thick yellow cream, we went through loads of it and it was very good... but in the end we left it as we knew he would never be shown again and he hated so much all the treatment to the point that i couldnt do any more for him, as i felt so much for him-so still to this day he has very bad scares and proud flesh...thank god he has not been at all lame so we have been able to carry on riding and jumping him- but if anything does really work then i would love to know.... |
