My friend has a 26yo pure bred mare called Salanis. She came from a sanctuary in Dumfries. She is by Jazaan out of Samaris and we would love to know more about her early years and what she has done. We know she has had at least 3 foals but not much else. Does anyone remember her?
Yes Moira I remember Salanis or "Sal" as she was known. Salanis was bred by Mrs. D.M. Campbell by Jazaan out of Semaris by Count Rapello. She belonged to a friend of mine called Jennifer Sloan who lived at Lochmaben. Sadly Jennifer died and Sal then went into the Sanctuary. Jennifer had two mares that she bred from. Raphia was the name of the other mare, she was also re-homed. Sal bred several foals by different stallions a few I can remeber are Rassendyll, Zhargos, and latterly two or three by a White Lightning stallion (I can look them all up for you if you want) - they were all useful types and one of her daughters was in the ridden class at Dumfries and Lockerbie Show this summer. Jennifer did show Salanis at the D. & L. Show every year, more often than not with a foal at foot. I was fortunate to be presented with the Jennifer Sloan memorial trophy for the Arab Champion at this years show. I hope Sal is well - I know she was always kept out summer and winter on the farm's extensive paddocks and thrived on it.
It's great that you remember Sal. She has been here for about 4 years now and Susan adores her. It would be fantastic of you could find out more about her foals. Susan went to visit one a while ago and she has also seen Roxtar (by Zhargos I think) as a few shows. Sal still lives out in the summer but comes in at night in the winter. Susan has had her at a few shows this year doing some veteran classes and dressage. What was she like when she was younger? We joke that she must have been a handful when she was young. She is still very cheeky and jogs out to the field like a 2 year old.
