Judith

she use to ride a 16.2hh event mare but the mare is permanently lame.

She has 3 horses and a foal and looks after them by herself.

We have a friend with one leg(removed from the hip) who has a specially adapted motorbike + sidecar gsx1300r ( i think!) which is all specially adapted for him and some bit of kit!!

years ago when i did my yts training there was a disabled lass with no use of her body from the waist down who used to to dressage on one of the school ponies who was extremely quiet she even competed at Goodwood on him !!

There's a lady who lives near us who is - I think - an Olympic standard dressage rider with the paralympic team. Certainly she rides at a very high standard.
A chap at a previous place I worked at was a thalidomide victim with very very short arms and legs and he rode my friend's 16.2hh horse and another friend's teamchaser.
And another friend used to work for a lady who was blind but she still rode at speed all over the place - and jumped!

Although not the same, a friend of mine rode while her leg was in full plaster from hip to toe after a motorbike accident... phew, rather her than me.

I think those who ride with a disability are very very brave and I take my hat off to the RDA who gives people a chance to sit high and proud and be able to do something tough and physical that a lot of able-bodied people can't do.

Perhaps people are not aware of the Calvert Trust in Keswick, Cumbria? This is an outward-bound type of centre whose clients are only disabled. They have their own horses for disabled riders and even do carraige driving up the Lake District fells. The problem they have is getting small but weight-carrying horses as many people who come to ride are adults but it is unsafe to have them on big horses as helpers can't reach them to support them.
