Thank you Mike! For the explanation and the illustration! I love the way you always have pics to illustrate your points. Do you have any more examples of changing heads?
V interesting point about the 'cute baby mammal' factor and our innate response to it. I have always thought that one of the reasons Arabs are so appealing is that they retain many of these 'baby' charateristics into adulthood (neoteny is the technical term, I think?) - the big forehead, big eyes, short face, small muzzle and so on - whereas most other breeds lose these as they mature. (The only other breeds that keep these 'baby' traits in adulthood to the same extent are Welsh ponies - especially section A - and miniatures.)
In other words, even grown-up Arabs still have a lot of the 'AWWWW factor'!

Mike, those pics are brilliant examples, they make us realise why we have to wait for a result, and and be PATIENT. Has anyone else had a non horsey/arab person see a recently born, pure-bred foal and actually cried at their beauty. I've had to carry a box of Kleenex around with me recently!!! They were described as deer-like (Bambi) and had grown-ups in tears. But unfortunately at the moment, they look like pig eyed, moth eaten, bucket heads. I think I might invite the teary people back for a 2nd opinion!!! |

Wow! This is fascinating. No, Mike, I haven't had enough. Some of your 'transformations' are amazing! You have certainly answered my original question - yes, heads can improve! And how! I asked because I thought it might be my barn-blind imagination telling me Tobago had got even prettier, but clearly it wasn't. And some of yours seem to be 'pretty-getting-prettier' as well, rather than 'ugly-duckling-to-swan', although obviously the latter transformations are more dramatic. Did your 3yo chestnut really turn grey???? |

Hi Kate,
No the chestnut didn't go grey, I merely mislaid a couple of photo's and now can't find them!
Lynn, for a proper "wild eyed" look, this is a photo of the last grey taken a couple of months earlier complete with winter coat. You may notice a subtle differance between the two photos

Mike, keep the pictures coming, they are great! Can I ask how many horses you have in total? I have visions of vast rolling hills covered in Arabs of all shapes, ages and sizes!

Yes, more pics please Mike! I am fascinated by how much youngters can change. More of Farouq especially - I love him! I've seen even prettier ones of him that you posted somewhere, I think. He has such a lovely expressive face.
Speaking of lovely faces (typical totally obsessed and besotted one-horse owner - I always bring the conversation back to MY horse), I have just received a batch of utterly fabulous photos of Tobago-the-supercolt from Erwin Escher, so I will try to post a few on here. I tried a while back with some snaps my husband took, but couldn't figure out how to do it... |
