Hi all,
I have entered my mare for two shows but I am a complete novice having never even been to a show OMG!! But I just want to try various things with her and have some fun That said, I don't want to make a complete fool or her or me ...so can you advise me please...anything at all on in hand showing for the total novice...
One show is a local agricultural show and the other is the Scottish Horse Show, which tbh I think I shouldn't go, as now I look into it further, it's way out of my league. Anyhow...
I have NO experience, NO equipment and NO idea but willing to do lots of work and try it and have some fun hopefully
Some 's that spring to mind are...
Halter or bridle? Any halter any bridle?
Do I practice walking and trotting her out from both sides?
Does she have to do that 'arab pose' that I see so many pics of?
Has the trot to be fast or varied?
What is the correct stance?
What do I wear?
Sorry if these seem basic, but I really know nothing about showing, if you think of anything else I would so appreciate it. Just soaking it all up...
Fiona
PS Hope it's ok to post this on the discussion forum, was a bit unsure and tried the showing forum initially, but don't think it was right there...jeez! I just get so worried I am not keeping within the forum etiquette So apologies if it's wrong, feel free to 'move' me!

As this is you first show, what equipment do you have already? i.e clothing, bridle, as you may be able to adapt what you have. your horse should be led/handled from the nearside, in a clockwise direction, the trot should be natural and free moving, as it's a county show I would think that a normal stand ( not posed/ stretched ) would be in order...although I may be a little out of touch as I havn't shown for four years. Are there any shows you could attend beforehand just to be sure haw arabs are being presented at county shows???? good luck and enjoy yourself. Jilly |

Hi Fiona, Good that you are getting out and about to shows. Don't worry if you dont get everything perfect straight away. Practise makes perfect!
For you: Waistcoat, Shirt, Tie, Trousers, Schooling stick or cane, gloves. Hat? - I prefer not to wear one but some people do. Think I've remebered everything!!!
Horse: Definately a bridle. You can get really nice ones from Madeleine. Or kiki designs based in Scotland. Think they both have websites. Dont forget all your lotions and potions. After shampooing spray on a sheen while the coat is wet and it drys sparkling! Muzzle & eye highlighter & baby lotion to put through the mane. Thats the little things that will just make him/her stand out.
I would also definalty practise before you take her out. It makes it so much easier if the horse knows what you are needing him/her to do. Especially with the excitability factor of being at a show! One less thing to worry about!
Dont worry about trying to stand her out like the pro's! Just try get her standing square. At least with her front feet level. Then when the judge brings you out of the line to look at him/her have a sweet or bit of grass to stretch out the neck.
Hope that helps! All the best and let us know how you get on. When are the shows?
Julie

Hi,
Thanks for replying Yes Kash my girl is Russian and thank you..
Jilly I don't have anything, equipment wise, but willing to buy what's suitable for that level of showing. However, looked at some lovely halters but they were £150 including the lead Just a wee bit too much for my level methinks I don't have a bridle either as I ride in a Parelli Hackamore and I don't think that'd be suitable So if it's appropriate for my level of showing buying a halter would probably make more sense for me, but not £150! Can I buy second hand halters anywhere apart from ebay? Although if it's ok to use maybe a bridle would be the cheaper option as I wouldn't use either outwith showing. My dress code? Again with doing endurance I don't have tweeds or anything... e.g. would black trousers and a smart top do ok for this level?
I know it would be a good idea to go and see some beforehand, but I've been looking and unless I'm wrong these seem to be the only two in Central/South Scotland with Arab classes, apart from Doune and Dunblane which is this Saturday, but I can't go Are there any other small shows with arab classes in Scotland anyone? The two I have entered for are Perth and Kelso.
But thanks for the info so far, nearside, clockwise natural trot, normal stance, GREAT!

Oops!
Thanks Julie, we were typing at the same time!
Brilliant stuff
Does any sheen do the job or is there a particular one for greys as they never look shiny
I did read the recent thread on shampoos for greys so will dig that back out again...

Hi Fiona,
It's exciting isn't it?!
I used a shampoo called quicsilver on Quinn to get him gleaming. It is purple in colour, but don't worry it doesn't stain the coat. you can wash it into manes and tails and leave it for 10 minutes to really bring out the silvery highlights in the hair prior to rinsing out. Then as Juliebeattie1 says cover her in a coat sheen spray. I used Absorbine Showsheen, as it prevents dust and dirt from settling on the coat again.
I also used chalk powder on his white legs (whilst still wet from washing) then I put travel boots on over the top and left them on overnight in the stable to make sure he didn't get his legs dirty! The result here is gleaming white legs when you take the boots off!!When she is clean from bathing, make sure you cover her up with rugs otherwise if she is anything like most greys she'll have managed to attract stains from somewhere!!
If you have trouble in finding an Arab In hand bridle let me know and I'll lend you mine. It is dark havana rolled leather with tiny diamonte daisys along the nose and up the cheeks. It's really pretty and would suit her well.
Most of all as everyone else has said, practice with her at home - I did loads of trotting Quinn up and down and getting Stephen to play judge, walking all round him etc. Finally enjoy the experience........thats more difficult, especially when the nerves kick in! Rescue Remedy is a wonder full thing. I had several measues of it before the RHS!!
Good luck and remember we want pictures!!

Black trousers and a smart top would do fine. Just go and enjoy it and build on the experience for the future. We all have to start somewhere! Good luck and let us know how you get on! YOu will be fine, but the Rescue Remedy is a brilliant suggestion! I always have mine around on show days! |

Have a go and see if you and she enjoy it
I have a lovely dark silver cable halter you are more than welcome to borrow, you would however need a show lead and chain. Just let me know |

I don't really have anything useful to add, being a novice to 'proper' showing myself, but just wanted to wish you luck!!I used some dolly blue on my boy today and must admit,it did make him look whiter, especially his yellowy tail! But then I turned him out,so whether he will still be white for his show in the morning.... |

Hi Fee Drymen Show (by Loch Lomond) has in-hand and showing classes. They have rescheduled to 19th August (I think)due to the rain in May. It's a really nice wee show and the arab classes are late in the afternoon, usually around 4pm. Might be worth thinking as not too far for you to travel.
My girl was entered for the original date in May but I'm expecting so tummy will be too big for sprinting around by Aug
