Following on from the tragic death of yet another horse rider on our roads we have the opportunity to ask our MP to support an Early Day Motion!
Some MPs have tabled Early Day Motion number 2332. This reads,
"That this House recognises the importance of bridleways for horseriders to exercise in safety and enjoy the countryside; notes that many bridleways are in poor condition or are abused by people using motorised vehicles; and calls on the Government actively to promote the use of bridleways, to ensure that those who use bridleways inappropriately are fined, to look to extend the number of bridleways across the country and to ensure that existing bridleways are kept open and are well maintained for horseriders."
Early Day Motions (EDMs) are often used to find out how much support different policy choices might attract, and to see whether proposed legislation might get through the Commons. This could be such a flyer.
If you would like to see the EDM supported, you need to write to your MP giving the number of the EDM, and reasons why you think it needs support. It is always best to give your own personal experience relating to one or more of the aims of the EDM rather than to use a form letter.
Feel free to pass this on as appropriate.
You can find out who your MP is here: http://www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/
You can see whether your MP has supported the EDM here: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=30884&SESSION=875
Many thanks for your support and if we can prevent another tragic death it will be worth it.
Thanks for reading

Read this interest as I am already involved with my local bridleways group which is doing sterling work, though its all slow, tedious and bogged down somewhat by beaurocracy. An idea - why not do a "name and shame" - lets find out which MPs HAVENT signed it and why. Just checking my local one though I dont think he would dare not to as he has such pressure on him from the Bways group and local BHS rep!! |

I have emailed my MP and asked why he isn't supporting it and the other 3 MPs in the county! We have thousands of horses here! We had a horse killed on a local road round 3 years ago-the rider luckily wasn't too seriously hurt. |

I have e-mailed my mp and asked him to support the bill. I explained how I spent 3 months in intensive care fighting for my life after a car hit us. I gave him all the details and hopefully he will see the need to support the bill. |

I would support you if I could but Jersey doesn't have the UK vote!
Just wish I had someone to petition over here ~ our roads are narrow and DEADLY and no one has any respect for pedestrians, cyclists or prams.....much less horses or even children on ponies!
I won't ride on the roads any more and the farmers do not like you riding the headlands of their fields much either.
There is the beach, I suppose, but you have to get there first with either a horse box ~ and they get NO respect on the road either ~ or riding ~ forget it! Then once you are there , between the months of May and october, you can only ride between the hours of 10.30am and 6pm. We are banned at any other time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even when it's dull and cold and there is NO ONE on the damned beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are now far more horses than cows in Jersey but no one gives a damn for the needs of the owners or the animals, despite the obscene ammounts of money the Government here charges for giving consent to graze, to put a stable, to dump manure....etc, etc!
I would love to be able to add my voice as I know the difficulties some people in busier areas face.
Still, for what it is worth, you have my full sympathy ! |

Great news!
We are up to 93 signatures!!! On 21st June it was 41!!! Well done all keep plugging this! there are over 300 MPs. If you haven't asked your MP yet please do so now! It's only an email to ask them stating the EDM number.
We need to show the MPs that we can ask for help to improve the bridleway network so that no more rider or horse deaths occur weekly on UK roads. |
