I would like to know from those who go to shows or own Psyche get, grandget, etc.. how these horse have changed the type and conformation of halter and performance horses. Before Psyche did halter horse have the action(extreme trot), typy heads and size? Personally from what I have read and seen in photos that Sheila Varian's Desperado V get conquered the show ring. I am interested in hearing others' opinions on Padrons Psyche. Thanks

To me, Padrons Psyche is the ultimate Arabian stallion who stepped out of a dream. I fell in love with him after seeing his beautiful photographs in the Robert Vavra book 'Horses Of The Sun', not realising at the time how influential he would become to the breed.
Of course no horse is perfect, but I think Psyche adds size combined with type, movement, manages to stamp his mark on his offspring and I think because he is not straight this or that, can combine his style with a variety of bloodlines, be it Russian, Egyptian, Crabbet, Polish or whatever.
It is very fashionable to own a Psyche horse these days, but I think this is definitely a trend which will continue for many years to come and breed on down the generations. His influence is of course worldwide, with champion offspring housed in every continent. Though of course these horses are already proven show horses in hand, and breeding horses - it would be good to see some of them being shown under saddle, as of course Psyche has also got a very unproven performance pedigree as through his sire Padron and maternal grandsire Tamerlan.
Ultimately my dream is to own a Psyche related offspring of my own..... until then I will continue to keep an eye on all the continuing Psyche imports and their progress in the show ring and breeding barns (and an even closer eye on those lottery numbers every week - Ha!)
Just my opinion anyway...

I have a Psyche daughter and she personally is everything i could wish for in an arab. The looks, the movement, type and height. More so, she has the most wonderful personality very similar to the english/crabbet and is the ideal tent horse.
It is almost "someone beat me to it" in breeding what i would call the "perfect Arab".

Would also like to add that when i look at her, she oozzes ride me and if she weren't pregnant we would do Lands end to John a groats?
Watch this space as it won't be too long, hopefully.
Quickly add, non-araby people are in ore of her and her movenment as a ridden a competition horse because of her long and free movement, so what a good ambassador for the breed. Many thanks Padron Psyche.

Hi Kerry...
Your mare is Psyches Thais right?! Ive seen her on video and she is a stunner. How long have you had her? Would also love to know who she is in foal to?
Also saw your stallion Golden Boy with his beautiful colouring, saw him showing a couple of times last year - looking a bit of a handful - Ha! (have a couple of pix of him from Malvern where he looks like he's eating his handler, and also captured him on video from Towerlands)
If you have any pix of your horses,(including your Kais colt also) please do share them with us, would love to see more.

Fiona

I first saw Psyche as a 2 year old in Scottsdale in 1990. He is one of the very few stallions that I felt I needed to go back to the stable to get a closer look—usually I can see what I want from the ringside. He has been a great influence, and in my opinion a far better sire than any of his sons up to date. Of course he is not perfect, but a great horse with type, substance and movement.

I then really got to know him, when I was doing consulting work for La Cabreah, who owned him for a few years. I helped arrange for him to go to Europe for the presentation at the European Championships with Erik Dorssers in 1995. I still follow his progeny—and they are all over the world, a bit like El Shaklan, another of my favourites. Liz Salmon

Being one of the few people in the UK to have bred my own Psyche son, Psyche’s Spirit, and my stud being based on these bloodlines, I hope that you will forgive a rather lengthy reply. Like Fiona, I was struck by Padron’s Psyche in the Robert Vavra book ‘Horses of the Sun’, he just moved me. He was rich in body and colour, and had a magical type that, in my opinion, far surpassed extreme dishes. He looked so prepotent and that is exactly what he is! My personal favourites are the Psyche lookalikes i.e. chestnut, good bodied, good moving typey individuals, as firstly that is what I loved in him and I also think these are the strongest progenitors of that bloodline. He adds showmanship, that extra special something which just wows us on the day, without losing pretty or conformation. This is of course a generalisation and not true for all, mothers do have some part to play. I think the addition of his bloodlines in the UK is definitely a very positive step forward. Decisions based on balance and total picture are much more beneficial to any breed than breeding on the basis of extremes. Of course though, like with any stallion, flooding the market in any one year with stock by one stallion is never a good thing and is something I fear. This is why we limit coverings to Spirit.

Over two replies, I will post firstly one of my favourite pictures of Padron's Psyche and then pictures of Psyche get owned by Argos Hill Arabians, Psyche’s Spirit and Vainglorious. In the second I will post Psyche grand-get, sired by Psyche’s Spirit. I thank you in advance for your patience and interest.

Psyche’s Spirit was born in 1998 and as a July foal, his first show as a yearling was at the Nationals, he has gone on to have an amazing show record including National winner, International Champion, both 2nd at the European Championships and tied second at the All Nations Cup, Regional Multi-Champion and was never out of the championships at Towerlands as one, two and three year old. However whilst these results are fantastic and he has given us an enormous amount of fun, our greatest joy is his success in the breeding barn. I think the pictures will speak for themselves.

Vainglorious by Padron’s Psyche was imported by Paul Atkinson and we purchased her in 2000. She is unshown to date and is in foal to Triple Crown Champion Ekstern for 2004.

Heather, you have really shown the Psyche influence in those photos, I have seen amny of them in the flesh too. I saw Vainglorious as a foal at La Cabreah and loved her then—she was spectacular. I have a video of her. She has certainly grown into a lovely mare. Liz Salmon

Thanx for posting all of those pix Heather! As you know Spirit is my favourite Psyche son that I have seen, mainly because of all the things that you have mentioned - he is a lookalike chestnut, prepotent, good bodied, good moving individual with great disposition and enormous sense of fun and also such a wonderful blend of Psyche combined with the precious Polish pedigree of his dam, SL Sweet Emotion.
I think that Spirit is now proving to be passing on all of this to his offspring (as illustrated by your photographs), and like his sire has the ability to cross with a variety of mares and still stamp his type on them.
So thank you for having the foresight to breed him, and in my opinion starting a trend and setting the Psyche standards within the UK. (Hope we can still get that overdue article sorted out sometime in the future eh!?!)

Hi all. Didn't know that so many of you knew i had Psyches Thais as i only told one person! I don't mind as she is one the the most beautiful mares i have ever seen. I feel very lucky to own her.
Anyway, to answer your questions, she is in foal to TR Viktor due May 2004. Her breeding is Padrons Psychex Sibiria. Her dams breeding is Balaton x Sarabanda. I do love my chestnuts!
This foal is very special and this is why i am not risking backing her until later next year.
I bought Thais and Kalinin February of this year and have hit by the Russian bug big time. Now looking at another beautiful russian mare, who is ridden so now just got my fingers crossed.!
Curiosity has got the better of me, who are you Fyonah? Have i met you?

Hi Kerry...
I knew that you had Psyche Thais as I think it was mentioned on Breitnau website while I doing a bit of internet researching. I also saw her on their video as a youngster and also on a Psynergy video, she is a very beautiful, good moving mare and another great example of the sensational Psyche phenotype. Her TR Viktor foal will be wonderful blend of all of the best of those Russian bloodlines, what with Balaton, Menes, Peleng, Nariadni and Muscat.
You have very good taste in Arabians, best of luck with your breeding programme.

The quality of Psyche's Spirit and his foals speaks volumes. Not only is Spirit a top class show horse he is, more importantly, an OUTSTANDING SIRE with a fabulous temperament, and movement to die for !

In my opinion, too many people choose a stallion for their mare based simply on a season's show results, where the stallion has been widely promoted and subjected to a heavy publicity campaign. Very often those mare owners receive nothing more than disappointing offspring. Classic type (NOT HYPE) is overlooked and the ability to carry a saddle because of correct conformation is not even considered. The real proof of any stallion is in the breeding barn and that is where Psyche's Spirit scores.

Heather Brown must be congratulated on not only having the foresight to send Spirit's dam, SL Sweet Emotion, to Padron Psyche in the first place but also to have the insight to include in her breeding programme broodmares of such quality who in turn produce wonderful foals.

I cannot agree with Liz Salmon's remark that Padron Psyche has produced offspring better than any of his sons. Of course he has sired some wonderful foals but given the number of mares covered by him, one would expect a high percentage of quality offspring.

All credit must go to a small breeder like Argos Hill Arabians who in such a short time has consistently produced foals that many established breeders can only aspire to.

Well done Heather !!
