I've noticed that there are many enthusiasts on AL for Egyptian, Polish, Russian and Crabbet bloodlines, but rarely see people mention Spanish Arabians. Can anyone shed any light as to why they don't seem to be so popular? . Being an enormous fan of Borneo, El Shaklan etc, I would love to see some of them get more of a mention.

Which one is she Sam in your pictures? What is her breeding? They appear to me to be such chilled out horses in general and very beautiful. Do you also get the impression that they are a bit forgotten?

I went to see a friend who has Jalisco. He is by Sanadik el Shaklan out of Bint Jacio. I was extremely impressed with him. He had the most fantastic topline. Whwn he was younger he did very well in the ridden showring. Unfortunately he is not at stud.
I would love to use him and I think he would do wonders for some of the mares with dodgy toplines. This very strong topline is a trait of the Spanish arabians so perhaps we should look at them more closely. |

I am a "spanish Fan", - but what i really like is them "crossed" with straight egyptians.
My mare Havannah, has quite a lot of spanish, - being out the straight spanish mare Hagunia, and being a Estopa grandaughter. - her temperament is superb, her eye so deep and loving you could fall into them, She does have her Faults (dont they all!), but has proved a exceptional broodmare for us, - and she has stock that are successful, in "all" spheres, Endurance, Ridden Showing, Jumping, and a "National" winner in hand. (what more could you want?)
she is fantastic through her back, - even after Nine foals.

I have a three quarter spanish arab mare, her dam(camela) was straight spanish, her sire(azlal)is half spanish. She is very like her mum only standing at 14.1h,not as big and flash as some, but is a little stunner, well i think so!!! She can be so laid back at times, like when i show her and she tends to think it's all a little bit boring!! But when she shows off she's fab,she makes me realise how lucky iam that she owns me!!

My mare's not actually in my signature - her daughter is the bay foal though. She's by Amoroso De Salvadora out of an Egyptian/Crabbet mare. Sadly she's actually on the sales pages at the moment :( |

I love the Spanish/Egyptian cross too. They do seem to be very laid back horses in general, I remember Borneo when he won at Malvern - was it 6 yrs ago? He looked like he was just coming up from the field! Such a lovely boy and he isn't exactly huge and yes those eyes, you could just drown in them!
Sam, what is the name of your horse for sale?

Think you are right Egzotyka, great grandad was Galero, def Spanish on that side of breeding. Bambooki is (or was, sadly I believe) one of those horses I really wish I had seen in person and not just pictures, he looks so beautiful and a real sweetie. Have in my mind a lovely picture of his head with a little dog nose to nose with him and another one of a child on his back. Am just leafing through Joanna Maxwell Spanish Arabian Horse Families and see that next to entry for Galero says 'stolen 82'!. Wonder what the story was there?

Sam, such a shame that you have to sell. Arabian Beauty was a lovely sire, my mare had a foal by him called Khymanoa who I think was owned at one time by Tudor Arabian Stud and i THINK that the picture of Bambooki taken with the baby on his back was also taken at TAS, did they also own Bambooki at one time do I recall? Didn't he then belong to Linda Free? sorry to ramble and apologies to anyone if that is incorrect.

Gerald Watson of Send Court, Surrey breeds exclusive Spanish bloodlines. He entered at Wales and West this last weekend but did not show. He has the mare Estepa - bred by the Maxwells and I think she is a World Champion? |

Hi Does anyone have contact detals for Send Court or any other spanish breeders ? I am currently looking for a ridden mare (or possibly gelding), but would love one with some spanish in her bloodline. Sam's mare looks & sounds lovely but is to small for me & in foal. I put my arab mare to Borneo when he was at the Maxwells many years ago, and he had a wonderful personality, unforuntely my mare lost her foal so never got to own a spanish arab. |

Rebecca, that's really sad that your mare lost her Borneo foal, I too would have loved a foal to him. Next best now would be Adawy or Azteq! or how about Ali Abbas?

Thanks for that info Jen. Would not breed from her now as 16 and was a nightmare to get into foal last time and then losing, obviously just not menat to be a broodmare. Just seen a gorgeous picture of Azteq, is he still owned by the Turner's ? Bec |

Wonder if anybody took any pictures of him there that they could post?

If you want to see a nice picture of AZTEQ, go to www.lesleyannhartman.com
click L/E prints, and look for 'TIMELESS'
That is a painting she did of Azteq Its wonderful, I have a large print, but the original at that time was not for sale. Not sure if its sold since. Will ask Lesley at malvern.
I have just bought the original Desert Born. |

I have a straight Spanish mare bred by the Maxwells. She is 15 2"+ hands and has the most enormous Spanish eyes, they are incredible. I mated her to Arabian beauty for her first foal but she reabsorded. I sent her to Crusader the following year and had a colt, he is now my super stallion, Spanish Crusader. He has inherited his mum's huge spanish eyes and is gorgeous , also 15 2"+, the Spanish/Egyptian cross that you (and I) love Jaj. I have a Spanish/Egyptian mare by my stallion and she is also gorgeous plus a Spanish/Egyptian filly foal from the Spanish mare and she is also lovely.
My spanish mare raced at four, they are very athletic, sound horses and she has very good legs. Sadly due to losing my job I have to part with some of my horses, just need some decent photos of them!

Hello Pat,
Lucky lady being able to purchase Desert Born, do you know who the model is? The Azteq painting is wonderful, absolutely beautiful and as for Dream..... I was lucky enough to commission Lesley to carry out two paintings of Kuraishiya about 5 years ago and they are quite lovely, she took some very good photographs when she was down with me which I must get framed. I also love the photo she took of Silvern Risalm at Malvern when he received his award last year. Must get myself a print of Timeless before they all go... My sister bought me a beautiful print of 'Malvern Mares' by Judith Kent Pyrah last year, would love to know which mares she based the painting on.
Hello Barbara,
Your Spanish Crusader sounds gorgeous, would love to see a picture of him. That is just such a great combination isn't it. What is your mares name? Is she grey per chance? That's my absolute favourite horse, a Spanish/Egyptian grey mare. It must be very hard having to lose some of your horses, do you have photographs of any of them?
My children are screaming at me and I keep telling them I'm working and they say "no you're not, you're playing"! so guess I'd better attend.

Hi,
Good point there are few and far between Spanish horses, and I believe that Gerald Watson is the last person breeding Straight Spanish, although Chris Morris has some down in Devon. Chris Wesley also has some inc. a stallion
My mare Aliesha is straight Spanish (bred by Chris) she is by Fuego (Ghadames) x Talima (Falce x Tichla). Aliesha is superb athlete and I've had her for 8 yrs now, bought as an unbroken 8 yr old she was placed 3 times racing, bred two foals the first Zayin Encantado is by Egyptian Karmah and due to race with his new owner next year and last year she gifted me the most beautiful filly by Russian Stallion Dawwas who gets more beautiful everyday. Procyon of course sired several race winners and the Jenkins still have quite a few. Aliesha is back in work and won a hunter trial on her first attempt last month and is due to do some endurance this year, not bad for a late starter. She'll go back to stud next year.
I love the Spanish as they are incredible movers, very athletic, brace and loyal with the most exceptional eyes as already said!
But yes its true where are they all? It seems they are no longer in fashion so people don't use them anymore.
