I feed my mare Grow n Win with unmolassed sugar beet and alfalfa.
She is a bit itchy and her coat is dusty although she has a bit of shine to her coat (chestnut).
My gelding - grey - is fed Nestler Solid Gold and his coat is clean and smooth and very shiny... They both get added Magnesium to their feed as the pasture is low in it.
Would anyone recommend a different stud balancer which takes care of the itchyness or should I simply add a bit of oil to her diet? The foal is due in two months time.
She is also quite lethargic at the moment, but that could be due to the pregnancy hormone thing

My grey mare is on saracen bio - life 2000 balancer can be fed to foals and mares in foal or with foal at foot, it has given my grey a slight shine, she has never been rugged this winter and her coat is smooth and shedding like a carpet |

Hi Marie It would not be the grow n win that is making your mare itchy, I would say she is itchy as it is now the time of year that many start shedding their winter coats. Also you do not need to be feeding the extra suppliment as gro n win is already balanced to make sure that when fed at the recommended quantities your horses get all the vitamins & minerals that they need to be healthy. I think that the answer to your problems could be to groom your mare every night to get all that itchy dust and loose hair out.
As for being lethargic, yes some mares get like that after 9 months or more of caring a big 'lump' about. I was glad of a few months peace when my mare went like that, as she can be a bit of a trouble maker :)))
Good luck with your mare & foal

Hi Angel,
Thanks for the advice.
She started shedding her winter coat back in January! It's almost all gone now.
I was getting concerned as she was not finishing her feed, but took off some of the sugar beet and she cleans her bucket again... I have added a slurp of sunflower oil and she seems to like it. I will keep it at that and groom her religiously once a day too.

I fed sure grow to Rain while she was in foal as she is such a pudding!! all the vitimins and minerals she needed without the extra condition. It's difficult at this time of year but when it warms up she would probably appreciate a warm bath. |

Hi Lisa,
It would have to be a very warm bath with soft sponges - she HATES to be bathed. Dances around like a ballerina at the sight of the hose!
But a good idea though, will do that as soon as the weather turns warmer.
