My arab comes back from being backed this weekend and she needs a saddle, but she still has a lot of growing to do. I have been riding her where is is being backed in a Derby house Samber working hunter saddle and i love it. What to do, she still has a lot of growing to do, it has been suggested that i send a template of the saddle that she is in at the moment to Derby house and have a saddle made for her so it has a little room for her to grow into, thing is should i not always have a saddle fitter out to fit a saddle? They are not overly exspensive £600.00 - £700.00 for a brand new saddle but im not 100% sure, Derby house dont come out to where i live. We have a very good local tack shop that fit saddles, they will supply me with a second hand saddle for about £450.00, but they dont stock Derby House saddles and thats what i wanted for when she has stopped growing, and then i would be left with a saddle to sell!!! If i buy one from Derby house i still have a long wait approx four weeks, and she will need to be ridden as soon as she comes home!!! I have booked an appointment with my local saddle fitter for this weekend, but i just really do not know what to do...... Any idears????

If Derby house cannot get to you and horse will travel cant you maybe go there for a fitting?, i personally would rather always have a prof fitting so i know my horse is fitted correctly, i darent try the template myself but maybe thats just me

hmmm , its a strange one this , how do you know were she is going to grow ?

if you have saddle fitted to compensate , then it doesnt fit, you say the saddle you have fits well , perhaps you should have THIS one checked by saddler for a small charge & perhaps get them to come out again in say , 3 months when she has started to fill out & change shape as she will !

a lot of saddlers will part-exchange , or you could sell privately , its not such a bad thing to hang on until she is ready..

I would say be very carefull, you need a saddle that will fit her now, and not cause any discomfort.

Also, I as I know to my cost, even as they get older they change shape, Apache was 6 when I got him, I got a saddle professionally fitted (Medium tree), within a 9 months he had gone to a MW tree, then 18 months later, he went to a XW tree, and now at 11, I'm probably going to have to get an XXW tree.

I don't have any personal expereince of them, but would it be worth getting one of those saddles with an adjustable tree and inserts, then you can alter it as she changes shape? Or even a treeless if you aren't competing?

I've heard another report today about a treeless rubbing the fur off a horse's back. Judith S posted a worrying picture on her contribution to a thread on saddles a week or so back.

i was told by a saddler at the weekend, that treeless saddles are not as good as treed saddles, and he's researched into them, he said in 10 years then treeless saddles will definately be the way to go, but until then he advised to stick to treed.

by the way i have an adjustable gullet synthetic leather saddle i'm selling, let me know if you would like any more details.

Agree with Sazzlepants on this one -- you don't know where she will muscle up, so leaving room in the saddle will just mean it is a poor fit now as well as later.

I probably sound like a stuck record by now, but Saddle Company saddles are excellent. They are leather on top so look very smart, but are synthetic underneath so also very light. They have GP, WH, etc. They cost about £500 new, and after the initial fitting you can have them fully adjusted as your horse changes shape. The fitter will come to you with the equipment to do this, and of course will re-measure your horse for the adjustment, so it always fits well.

I don't know where you're based, but if you're somewhere Southern, Vicki from Better Saddles (www.bettersaddles.co.uk) will travel to you & she is a fantastic saddler, one of the very few I would trust. She stocks treed & treeless, and is a mine of info. Personally I'd stay away from treeless as outlined in the other thread.

Hey,

Thaks for all your info, still no saddle

Sazzlepants: The saddle i had been riding her in belonged to the person that was backing her for me, it was a OK fit, little on the big side but apparenly she could have grown into it, it only slipped forward slighlt and i supposed would have been rectified with a thicker numnar (sp) sorry should have explaind the saddle that i was riding her in was from Derby house. I sort have gon down the Derby house saddle idear and have faxed them a template of my horse etc, this was last Wednesday, they cant make there mind up weather i need a wide fit or extra wide fitwhich is a little worrying. But there customer service is soooo pore, they have not phoned me back yet with the size that i need to orderbut did tell me when i 1st phoned that if it did not fit then i can return it, but i will have to pay for the P & P to return it, im sure that will be fairly exspensvie. I dont want to have a sythietic saddle (sorry just dont like them. My horse is not exaclty a great travler so i cant take him to them. Im not sure if i want to use my local saddler as i have heard mixed reports about how good they are I just dont know what to do.... but i do need a saddle. I dont want to give my money to Derby house any more as they just seem to mess me about. Has any one else had any experiances with Derby house?

I had problems buying a saddle for my mare, i firstly got a made to measure for her from Hey Farm saddlery, it cost me £650, a couple of months later it started moving and didn't fit once she had built muscle.

I now have the showing saddle from derby house, i took a template of her to there shop (this was a couple of years ago), i got a second hand showing saddle in a wide fit and have not had any problems with it so far.

You could get a second hand saddle to start with and if she changes shape it won't end up costing you as much if you have to swap it.
Another option as you say you don't like the synthetic type saddles, you could look at the Bates saddles which have the adjustable gullets but they are leather, they do a gp and dressage, they also have the cair panels to stop pressure points. they also have these at Derby house.

After not hearing anything from Derby House in over a week i have decided that i will get my local saddler out to fit my new saddle i have asked them to bring out a selection of new and used working hunter saddles and am a little excited now... On Satruday i will be able to ride my baby at home for the 1st time ever. I am sure that if they do a poor job at fitting my saddle i can get them out a gain to sort it out, but im sure that everything will be fine. Thanks everyone for all your advice i will let you know what sort i end up with. Oh one more question, sorry, but what sort of money should i look at paying for a good secind hand saddle thank you all for your advice and help

Hi pascoe , glad you managed to get something sorted out ! ]
i would definately down the second hand route for now save burning a hole in your pocket!!"

you should be able to pick a good quality , properly fitted saddle between 350 -450 pounds depending of course on the brand or name , but of course it your horse were are talking about so 'cheap' isnt always the best route!
personally i have used & loved ideal saddles for years , they really hold their value too , which is worth bearing on mind when your mare has matured and muscled up & you may find yourself looking at another saddle in 6 months time!

so personally if that is the case dont part -exchange , you always get a 3rd of the value beleive me ! muggins here has been there !

sell privately..or ebay it ! that old fail safe ! really hope you get your saddle your local saddler sounds the best deal for you poo to derby house! ( their loss your gain ! )
