Garnet, I so agree with you. The atmosphere has changed completely at Malvern. We used to have such a fantastic time meeting up with old friends every year.

Unfortunately it's once bitten twice shy for those of us who left the AHS because we were ignored, insulted or treated as second-class citizens! I would dearly love to relive the 'good old days' if I could find someone to run and ride Red but only if the atmosphere at Malvern was the same as in the 90s. |

While those of us who breed pure breds personally prefer them it doesn't mean that we think any less of anglos/part breds. I personally love coloured cobs; the only reason I have pure breds is quite by chance initially. I got my first horse when my children were in their teens and it was a 2 year old scrawny Arab gelding who I bought as I didn't think he would survive the winter where he was. I actually went to see a ridden anglo mare which I didn't like and poor Sammy was there, very scrawny and dejected looking, I came away with nothing and spent two weeks worrying about the scrawny scrap I had seen and when I couldn't stand the heartache any more I rang up and bought "Sammy"! I had never seen a purebred Arab before, his papers meant nothing to me and I had never handled a youngster before. The horses I had ridden many years before were all 16+ hands and typical riding horses with their manners.
I love thoroughbreds and anglos; in fact, I love all horses just prefer the look of some to others and I love the typical happy Arab temperament.
There was a time 6+ years ago when the AHS was in a mess and if you haven't been a member since then because of that do give it a second chance. I too would have left but because I needed to sort out ongoing problems I stayed and the difference is amazing. They are helpful and knowledgeable now (not saying that they weren't then but there were problems).

Sue the accounts are published every year in great detail so we can all see where the money goes. Anglo/part this question needs asking again what would you like to happen? £25 is very competitive in todays horse/pony society and if you go to chaps/ other societies you have to join your horse yourself every year which is more into the £100's I know for a FACT that several council members REALLY DO want you all as members and value the input the Anglo and part breeds bring to the society we just need to know why you feel so under valued and from what I saw at the national show you should never feel under valued |

Oh dear, now I've started on this thread.....I must say it's wonderful to have a person in authority who is interested enough to ask the question. Thankyou.
My biggest grievance at the moment is the fact that I have to pay £25 bronze membership, on top of the already substantial entry fee, for my handler to walk round in one or max, two classes at the National Show. I can see how it is justifiable for the Pure-bred handlers who need this membership for ECAHO classes throughout the season and may handle in a high number of classes but the National Show is the only show where it is needed by Anglo and Partbred handlers, thus making the cost of our one class exorbitant. This disproportionately legislates against AA/PB exhibitors and certainly contradicts the purpose of the AHS's charitable status "to encourage the use of Arab blood in light horse breeding".
Also I was told by a Council member, this rule applied to the Anglo and Part-bred UK Championships, as it is now incorporated in the National Show schedule and catalogue, and membership badges would be checked in the collecting ring. This obviously didn't happen, as I know for a fact that at least one winner was neither owned by a member or handled by one.
This rule is one too far for me and has stopped me showing at the last two shows. I have been a member since 1960something and a Life Member for not much less!

That comment says it all really as far as the Anglos and PBs are concerned. No wonder they feel the poor relation. I am assuming that the membership fees are the same whatever you happen to want to keep. |

It annoys me that one of the aims of the AHS is supposed to be to promote the use of Arab blood in light horse breeding and yet all those fabulous Anglos and PBAs are treated as the poor relations when they may well appeal to a wider audience than the pure-bred does, wonderful as they are. The PBA, who is definitely the poorest of the poor relations, can supply such a wide range, from a pretty child's pony to a substantial hunter or eventer etc. |

My Mum and i have a family membership. I really enjoy the magazines and though i no longer show (though i may go to one or two next year and hopefully Malvern) i still like to support my breed society.

Morag, I am sure you are not unwelcome; sometimes with the "in crowd" it just feels that way and there are always plenty of ringside judges who will assess your horse fairly (even if they don't get it right!) and really don't care who is on the end of the lead rope.
Sadly a lot of people have stopped showing which in turn makes membership/showing dearer as the AHS has to balance the books the same as everyone else.
I did remain a member when I only had two "happy hacker" geldings but I could afford to; it might be different now as money is tighter.

I joined about 3 years ago, when my year's subscription was up they didn't even bother to ask me to renew, and since I don't breed or show I didn't bother. The new tiered subscription sounds slightly better. |

I have only joined in the past when i had a foal to reg, i have so many other things i am in its seems a waste of money as i do not show. I don,t need to be a member to reg PBA but i will say when i reg both my PBA.s when the passports came back they only had a few of the dams side filled in even though shes a reg Trakehner mare and we sent her breeding, the passport says unknown after the first couple of generations which i think looks awful, they didn,t do that when i reg an anglo . |

I am a life member - bought when I felt that I would live long enough to benefit from not paying yearly fees! And thankfully have. I benefit from free national entry and two magazines - nothing else having had a break from breeding for 10 years. I do show just to spite them! I have had same trouble with 'names' stealing my stable and I still feel I am unwelcome in the show classes but I have thick skin and a view that the more ordinary people turn up and show the more ordinary people will turn up the next year and we WILL reclaim OUR show and society. So join up and take part and let's have a revolution. |

I am a member, but the type of membership I have depends on what I'm doing with the horses. This year I am a bronze member, but if I have a foal coming next year then I think I will need to be a gold member |

I did join originally when I bought Spider years ago but as I don't really show and I own two geldings I don't think it is relevant to me but happy to be told why it is! |

No Kathryn I'm not a member and haven't been for quite a few years. Currently I would get very little from it that's necessary for life and £25 is 8 bales of hay where I live. So honestly I'd rather spend that money on the boys than on 2 magazines. I was a member when I had a show horse (don't just now) and I will again when I have a reason to renew my membership once more. I take the point about giving back to the society and yes I do care about the breed but honestly what is the society doing for the breed specifically? I would be interested to see the list of what it does. |

I don't show and I don't breed pure Arabs, and still I can only say how good they've been, the Arab horse society did not know me, and were still help full, they may have tried to not be so friendly, and may have tried to be rude to me, but I was having non of it They explained things in a way that is easy to understand (yes I did feel a bit slow) and have managed to register, licence, back register part Arab youngstock, am I a big earner for the Arab horse society! Don't know but what I do know is that there are some fantastic foals that are able to be registered because of what I have been able to do, all part Arab and most for sale on the 16th Oct at the Sedgemoor centre J24 of the M5

Thank you for your comments, all taken on board. Is there anything as a part bred/Anglo owner rider/handler you would want to see from the AHS? The classes are put on but you don't attended,why not? as small part breeds you can qualify for HOYS and also the wonderful Cherif Championship.
Pure bred owner/rider/handlers what would you like to see? I know you think the registration fees are high and that sometimes the staff may be rude..!!! I know you think the AHS is just about showing but what other events would you like and would you attend, things get put forward organised then no one turns up..!!!
My suggestion is to help change little by little and I believe in evolution rather than revolution and I would like more people to help the breed and become members so we can stand united as a breed society, and trust me some of the AHS members are rude to me, but some people resist change which is what a lot of members want.
May be im living in la la land but I don't want to loose sight of how wonderful our breed is

been their..it took over a year to get my home bred filly registered as the hair samples were lost/not dealt with. I got nothing but agro and a very expensive passport so I swapped to BHS who have an excellent free legal advice helpline, provide me with super 3rd party liability cover and access to lots of helpful information via their magazine and website. |

I can speak of the Italian Arab horse society (ANICA) they have always been very kind and efficient when I dealt with them for change of ownership for Pasch and Armos,I am not a member as I don't show or breed but they keep sending me mails on news and events.
On the other hand,their activities are mostly focused on showing.They did try recently to organise something else (dressage,endurance and western riding) but without much success as inscriptions were complicated and there are other societies doing these things better already.
i have to agree with Garnet and others as the society here is also mainly involved in showing as that's where the big money is,but this does not much to help and promote the breed-quite the opposite in fact. |

I was a member for a number of years and used to love going to Haydock, Malvern etc. When I decided to call it a day membership was £44 as far as I can remember but this was not the reason I left. It was becoming increasingly obvious that Anglos and PBAs were very much the poor relations - probably the reason why registrations and entries are so low now. I remember classes with over 20 entries. Quote from a judge when I explained that my horse was on his toes because it was his first experience of the noise from the pure-bred grandstand - Well it is their show!
Letters to AHS went unanswered. There was a request in the magazine for articles so I wrote one - it was not even acknowledged, much less published. My applications for Premium Mare status for Vlacq Garnet and Aldwych Arabesque on the basis of their show records went missing for many months and only after my husband phoned were they miraculously found in a drawer and dealt with.
I was very sad to end my association with the AHS as I had had so much pleasure from being a member and learning about the breed - my first visit to Ascot in 1987 was a day I shall never forget.
As several people above have implied, some members are more equal than others! I hope the AHS will do more to encourage grass roots and lapsed members instead of apparently concentrating on the breeders and producers of extreme pure-breds. While not intending to get into a discussion on conformation, extreme type and manner of showing do nothing to endear our breed to the non-Arab horse world in general, which is also sad but a digression from the subject of this thread. |
