Hi all, I just had to post this, so many people including so called horse lovers are posting disgusting jokes about this on FB! Am I really the only one who is sickened to the stomach at the thought that there is a chance that unwittingly I may have eaten a lasagne which contained horse meat. I am horrified at the thought, I could no more eat horse than I could dog or cat and what gets to me the most is that the choice has been taken away from me and I may have basically been force fed it How can people find this situation funny?? and yes I know the argument that other animals so why not horses but I don't believe horses are treated as humanely at slaughter as cattle from what I have read, and by the time they arrive there they are usually in a sorry state, I find the jokes very hurtful and can't find anything remotely funny about it

I hadn't really noticed any jokes (but then don't do facebook) but when I googled 'horsemeat' sadly 'horsemeat jokes' was suggested by google. Says it all really doesn't it.

The real tragedy (for me) is that it now appears that the meat came from Romania, and will be fueling that dreadful misery of live transportation of horses. Dreadful. Makes you wonder doesn't it, France is a huge producer of horse meat yet buys still more from Romania and then the end product arrives on dinner tables in Britain - and still there is profit for all parties (except the animals).

Sadly there are carcinogens in lots of foods we eat.....again that isn't shown on the list of ingredients!

Here we go again....

Whenever anything high profile hits the media someone somewhere has a joke about it thats just the way it is....some are amusing and others in bad taste but everyone has a different sense of humour and I do think people can be a little over sensitive. when on FB there are jokes flying up all over the place about so many different things and nobody is going to get/like them all.

As for the whole horse meat scandal thats surely for another topic as this one was quite clear that is was about the jokes people have made about it rather than the issue of the meat itself!
Zenitha Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 7:01:52 PM
In defence of George, that is the way I read it as well ....personally, I find the jokes in bad taste, but thats just how I feel, each to their own !

No one can afford to be flippant about this issue - the fact is, if the organisation responsible for incorporating horse meat into 'beef' products is underhand enough to pull this off, do people really think they were 'careful' about the horsemeat they used ? There are countless routine medicine's used on horses that should not be finding their way into the food chain, some of them widely used and carcinogenic.....:( :(
If people don't care about man's best friend (yes, best friend - no other animal has served man for so long, nor died in their millions for us in the name of war ), perhaps they can at least be concerned for the potential health issues for humans arising from this deception.
littlearabians Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 6:47:50 PM
actually it was and it came from meggie-lus comment regarding not reading the jokes... but maybe me being not English makes you not understand my sense of humour, maybe the fact that we have never meet so you haven't got a clue what I'm like, makes you take things I say to heart... I am sorry I upset you, I didn't mean to... I will leave this topic and I will never post on your topics again.
george Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 6:39:18 PM
Oh yes very clearly a joke!
littlearabians Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 5:42:17 PM

KIND OF INDICATES IT WAS A JOKE!!!

back to the 1 in 7
george Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 4:53:54 PM
Just read my own post back and yes I have stated "so called horse lovers" I have not said anybody is a horse hater
george Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 4:46:46 PM
Really???? what is your problem Littlearabians? I mean who has said anything about horse haters in fact I don't even know if you are a friend of mine on FB but if you are in light of your unfriendly attitude towards me I will oblige and un friend you if that is your wish? the apparently true statement was obviously aimed at me!
littlearabians Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 4:31:28 PM
better way of avoiding the jokes and those nasty horse hating people that posts them (sorry couldn't resist since apparently a true horse lover wouldn't post jokes)... DELETE or block us as friends on Facebook = you will not see the jokes, and will be protected from evil jokes in the future

Then please pm me what you consider was an attack on your intelligence (I'm presuming by me) and I will endeavour to explain as what I said wasnt meant to attack your intelligence

Quarabian who do you think 'mislabels' food? Who puts things in food and the animals and don't tell us? Who kills animals halal and don't tell us? Who doesn't monitor the welfare of animals? Who doesn't deal with employers who abuse animals and disregard the laws and their basic rights? I think you'll find it all comes under the umbrella of the meat industry. I think you are quite aware that when I say 'they' are the criminals I do not include every farmer who produces for them, and nor do i mean you personally (which unfortunately is they way you've taken it) that would be and is ridiculous and if you thought I meant that then I hope that spells it out clearly for you. If you want to be pedantic then I'll say the factory farms, slaughterhouses, processors and retailers within the industry are criminals. Or maybe its easier to say the meat industry minus a few farmers?

Re your 'compromise' in drinking organic milk. I think you're right, the difference is probably placebo and it's akin to buying 'free range' eggs, especially if you're buying it from large milk producers via the supermarket. I would imagine its maybe marginally better for you but not better for the cows at all, depending on why you've changed to organic.

Like Rui says this is not the place or thread to argue these points, unless you want to make a joke about it Only joking folks! You're so right littlearabians, the amount of people who misread on forums is staggering! Some innocently, some I'm sure is not so.

I've not seen any of the jokes so don't know how black the humour is but it was inevitable that jokes would start to circulate. Anything that is current in the media becomes the subject of jokes. I doubt I would find them funny and like you George they would upset me on one level.

I also agree that horse meat being in cheap ready meals is no news when you think about the pressure to produce cheap food. I'm veggie so feel the same about other animals. My parents have some sheep and after dealing with them I can't comprehend how anyone could condone slaughtering them for meat.

The main things about this that upset me are the conditions those poor horses are transported in as Goldenmane said and also the ongoing indiscriminate overbreeding of horses.

I don't eat lamb or mutton (i don't like the taste or texture of it) and i don't eat pork as i studied pig behavior and i have trained pigs and spent most of my college life looking in depth at pigs, that is also why i don't choice to eat horse. I have also spent time studding and around chickens, fish and ducks but provided the animal is treated and killed in a way i deem respectable then i will carry on eating meats.
Rui Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 12:20:40 PM
Let's keep the discussion in topic, please. The original poster has asked it, the least that can be done is respect that request.
Meggie-Lu Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 12:13:16 PM
Quarabian i respect all meat producers that care about there animals and treat them in kindness, i studied an agricultural college in Suffolk that breed sheep the lambs are then sent for slaughter but the live stock teacher ALWAYS!!!! Ensured the lambs were well looked after fantastically, and we were always taught to treat all the animals with respect now think what you may of students being taught to respect meat animals but on my course it was a whole unit! Along with welfare of meat animals. Sadly bad stories make good news and you will never hear the stories of farmers that care about there animals from day one, because it wont sell papers somebody beating the s**t out of a turkey will.
Quarabian Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 11:58:05 AM
Responding to Fee's accusation about the meat industry being criminals I can answer in part as I am part of the meat industry.

As a meat producer I do care. I not only care about how my sheep and lambs are looked after and their right to be out in fields, have relationships with each other and choose what they eat and where they sleep at night. I also care about the quality of meat that they produce and that it is chemical free.

To say that the meat industry is criminal is slander. It is a personal opinion. Ill treatment of animals in the meat industry is criminal and I deplore it. Mis labeling of foods to deceive consumers is criminal. I am sure the criminals will be prosecuted in due course.

Sorry that this is off topic George, I didn't start it, I responded to an accusation that was false (in my opinion)
Meggie-Lu Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 11:55:25 AM
The jokes are something that happen all the time people i seem to recall made jokes about Michael Jackson and Whitney Huston and i'm sure they had people that love them.
I haven't personally posted jokes on my fb but just last night i ate beef stir-fry and i did ask if it was defiantly beef and not horse. But in no way to i not love my horses!!

I have a very broad outlook on life and yes i do think the fact that people have been eating horse with out there knowledge is terrible! And very disturbing, but most people don't have any sort of idea what is in there processed food. That is sadly the world we live in, where people want cheap easy food and people see meat as meat, welfare for transported animals like Littlearabians said has in the last five years got much better although in my own view i think it has a long way to come. Maybe with this publicity welfare for meat animals weather that be chickens, pigs, cattle and horses will improve.

littlearabians Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 10:29:18 AM
Goldenmane.... do you honestly think we don't know how things are in the real world, Ive seen several horses slaughtered...

As I said before because you smile at a joke, or make on on your facebook then it doesn't mean you don't know what happens in the world, nor that you don't LOVE horses... the best we can do for any animal is making sure they get a quick end to things, if more people ate horses no horse would be suffering on live transports (which the last 5 years have become A LOT better).
borleybird Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 10:28:18 AM
I agree with quarabian on this. After watching a program on chicken farmers and the pressure supermarkets put on them to produce cheap meat, I have been really careful where I buy meat from. The slaughtering of animals is just a small part of their life so in my mind their welfare through out their life is as important. I wouldn't choose to eat horse meat but I do choose to buy from suppliers (local farms and supermarkets such as waitrose and co-op who use sustainable business models) who I trust. I avoid buying cheap or processed food as I don't know what it really is. Its a pain as feeding my family is more expensive and time consuming but worth it to me.

As for the jokes, I have only heard a couple on Fb which I found amusing not offensive. I find sexist and racist jokes offensive and just ignore them as by reacting, I'm buying into their egos.
