Don't forget to stock up on glycerine to add to your outside water to stop it freezing....

i did half bottle last night in field buckets still frozen this morning although not thick ice so still water underneath which horses had got to, it was -9 here last night mind
Nippo Posted - 04 Feb 2012 : 11:01:31 AM
Thanks Doug but I have other plans for the vodka. Have found 200ml bottle in boots for 84p (glycerin not vodka) That's better. But they say not available any bigger. Surely it must be. Have put whole bottle in field water, about 20 gallons and half bottle in stable buckets. We will see.
Off now to buy more glycerine and MUCH more vodka.

If it still freezes then use more until it doesn't , or a bottle of vodka in the bucket should do the trick.

Well, thats us frozen.

Waiting for Doug to tell us how to get it into the pipes!!!!!

Our water supply is piped from a spring 3 fields away - we leave the tap running slowly but that doesn't work when its really cold.

We put our sugarbeet bucket in a bigger tub filled with hay with a feedbag over the top with more hay over it - has stopped it freezing solid so far....
sab2 Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 4:44:49 PM
My sugar beet was solid this morning, i don,t have any glycerine so tonight i have put some veggie oil on top of the water, not sure if it works but worth a try, will be no good for the water buckets though. To save time last night i filled all my water containers and put them in the car ready for this morning, they were frozen solid so that was a waste of time
Nippo Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 4:19:18 PM
D O U G !!!!!!!!!! where are you. We need to know how much to put in the buckets.
gossy Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 2:24:11 PM
Still need to know how much to use though mine are buckets in sheltered field with manure round them
Quarabian Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 11:22:22 AM
I'll bet it's cheaper in summer!!! Tip for June, buy glycerin to use in January.
Nippo Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 10:50:19 AM
Same here, didn't expect total result in fields but even stable buckets still froze. We also had -9. I put 2 tablespoons in standard bucket. How much is enough, or does it not work when temp gets this low.
Also, where is cheapest place to buy. Our chemist charges £1.79 for 100ml. Ouch!
gossy Posted - 03 Feb 2012 : 08:56:13 AM
ok how much do you put in buckets, tried it last night but mustnt of put enough in as still frozen this morning, although it was -9 last night BRRRRRRR

Callisto Posted - 01 Feb 2012 : 1:00:34 PM
Here's the original thread - I assumed it was liquid glycerine from the chemist, could be wrong...
