Hi i have 2 grey pure bred arabs. one is a 7 year old mare who was pinkie roan last year but had gone very white all of a sudden with dapples. and my rising 3 year ols is a dark steel grey (just lightened a bit in feb when he was clipped).
Just was wondering out of intrest how your grey horses change in colour.
Just intrested as i would love to know how long my gelding will stay steel grey? I know his sire is still fairly dark grey? i think he is 5. Thanks Katie x

Thanks Mrs Vlacq, i didnt think color would matter, like you said its the quality of the horse.
Im also loving the variety of shades of greys of your horses, its made me

I'd be surprised if there was any colour bias - very dark greys and blacks are often hard to photograph due to the sheer depth of colour, but in the flesh quality shows through any colour.
Angb's boy is 3 and still very dark. He has 3 full siblings, all born liver chestnut whereas he was born sooty. The eldest is still quite dark rusty rose grey, the almost 2yo is lighter than her, and the almost yearling is the lightest of them all! So you never can tell
Lovely pics everybody - enjoyed the spectrum on show!

I have heard dark greys dont tend to do as well being shown? Has anyone found this?
Saying that solitaire has had some great results with Miles Buckley, so am a bit unsure if this is true? xxx

Not arab, but here's my grey boy:

I can't believe he is going to turn white grey...Not sure he will be dapply either. His summer coat is coming through and it's very silvery. I did try and persuade him that he wanted to stay iron grey but not sure it'll work
SKTao Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 3:22:46 PM
Tao at 1 week old

At 2 years old

At 3 years....

Early 4 year old....

And now, nearly 5....

Looks like it wont be long till he's all white grey!
Hoping his dapples last a long while yet! xx

Hi would love to see those changing pics of Rosie, i think the 3 you have uploaded are when she is 6 months, if thats not the case shes certainly aged well
rosie Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 2:30:14 PM
Rosie at 6 months (registered liver chestnut to turn grey):

At 4 years:

And at 20 years:

She took a long time to go white-grey!!!

My friend has a grey arab gelding who was born black and he is now dapple/flea bitten grey.
My geldings sire PSY Dream, is quite dark.
Solli has a dark body yet like your boy Nichole, his tail is platinum blonde, with black at the top, it looks very striking, when flagged ha xx

I agree Ozzy's my first grey horse and i love the thought of him changing colour each year. It is like having a new horse

Ozzy's dad was black and Oz was born black (his passport says Black / grey) Don't know what colour his mum was.

He is a grandson of Cas Sabur and i think someone told me he didn't start going grey until he was about 8 years old.

Or how nice before and after. They always fascinate me when i see before and now pics of grey horses. It good having a grey cause you get a different horse each year ha
arabian Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 2:10:20 PM
not sure how old he was in the first pic as i didnt own him then but hes 7 in the second pic and i was told he went grey when he was 4....he was born bay like his dad.

parkvillenerog5 Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 2:09:31 PM
WOW he is dark and beautiful, Nichole.
Cant imagine Solli ever going light, but im assured he will xx
Nichole Waller Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 2:05:24 PM
This was Ozzy in 2009 age 4

and then in 2010 age 5

and again in 2011 age 6 (bit blurry..)

He is starting to lighten up on his face quite a bit and on his body he has more white hairs on his right side than the left

I'm dreading the poo and mud stains when he is fully white
parkvillenerog5 Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 2:04:48 PM
Isnt it amazing how they dont stay steel grey.

Kayal looks exactly the same colour as my boy.

Everyone loves his colour, but i keep saying he wont stay like that, yet no one believes me (non arab horse people,of course ha).

My boy looks a bit like an old man with the greying on his face at the moment, thats the only thing im not keen on, as people think he is old and he is just a baby. BLESS XXXX

Sorry, couldn't seem to paste this in previous post, Lily aged four, last year. (photo by Radfoto)
Callisto Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 1:47:47 PM
Lily (bottom left in sig pic) was born chestnut, spent a couple of years being pink and that photo was taken when she was four.
angb Posted - 24 Mar 2011 : 1:38:15 PM
Well these are my two. Charlie on the left was steel, dapple grey at 3yo, now 13; and Kayal on the right is nearly 3, and was chocolate brown at 6 months old!
