Can anyone recommend anything to make yukky yellow tails White!
The winter mud is taking it's toll on Dines tail and I want something to whiten it up a bit for the summer.
His tail is black at the top, grey inside and yellow on the ends so need something that won't bleach his darker bits.
I read on here a while ago about tesco value shampoo working well.

Hi,
I just mix about a two or three heaped tablespoons or so of the fullers earth (which I got off the internet - and it is white )then mix it in a non metallic dish with enough hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. I then smear this onto the stained bits of the tail - and leave it until it is dry (or overnight in Ishtar's case) - then when it is rinsed off - the tail feels really silky.
Margaret Coleman who told me about this - was a breeder of Arab's Part-breds and Palominos from years ago. She lived in Sussex - and bred some really good horses. - Can't remember her stud prefix - not sure if it was Lorelei or something like that. |

Have tried most of above on one palomino mare and her tail is still stained yellowish. Others come up well with just basic or blue shampoo. Carole, what ratio of Fuller's Earth to hydrogen peroxide do you use? That's one I haven't tried and it sounds like it's worth a go. |

Another vote for Tesco value shampoo, just on the ends though. I use insecticidal shampoo on top of tail in summer, then scrub the ends with the Tesco stuff. Finally I rinse with that Supreme Products blue rinse...though as others have cautioned not too much or the tail will be purple. This works for my daughter's very grubby Sec A pony! Lots of interesting advice on here which I may try too in our quest for perfection this summer! |

Reckitts Blue is available on the intranet and is really cheap. I usually wash first in a shampoo for greys and then do a soak in recketts blue in a bucket.
It works fabulously on Fayre and Diva (bearing in mind mine dont get washed all winter!). Jazz's never seems to come up white though so the hair must have different porosity (is that a word?!)
The professional palomino people will be able to give us some good tips for this subject - any of you out there lurking?? |

Hi Marie,
Wash the tail and get it as clean as possible = then dry it thoroughly - then apply the paste to the discoloured hair - and leave to dry _ (I used to leave it on overnight on Ishtar) but make sure it is covered - with a tail bag or I used cling film to stop it getting on her legs.
I would then rinse it off - and the final rinse would have a bit of Reckitts blue bag in it - and her tail would be really clean and sparkling white.
Never had the problem with her daughter Asti - just had to shampoo her well - and her mane and tail was really white. Her hair was totally different from her mums - and her Asti's grand-daughter luckily has the same type of hair as she did. |

Gosh, it all sounds hard work - makes me glad I have 4 black tails and one chestnut one!
My OH could have done with this info years ago when he had a palomino!

vinegar - soak the tail end in vinegar for a good 5 mins then was then use a whitener - works wonders for my lad. |

we always used zinc oxide witht he show ponies, you can order it from the chemist. i think gold label also does something similar, its a white powder that you mix with water into a paste, paint it on the white bits, leave it to dry and brush it out. |

hi , I keep the tail plaited up and he has a tail bag that he goes out in the field everyday- its brilliant!!
I do take his tail out everytime I ride though, I shampoo it once a week( even in the winter) and use the same as Kirsty (above) recommends! its the shampoo for blue rinses!
well, thats not strictly true, its too bring out silver hightlights in platinum and blonde hair - I have beeen using it with great success for about 2 yrs now - and it can be found in Lloyds chemist (dont normally get it in bigger stores)i usually leave it in for 2 minutes and then rinse out - happy washing

Hi,
My first Palomino mare Ishtar had a sort of transparent white tail - which was like blotting paper for any nasty stains - and a lady called Margaret Coleman - who used to breed Arabs and Part-breds decades ago - told me to mix a paste of Fullers Earth and Hydrogen Peroxide - just put it on the stained hair - not the dock obviously - and leave it to dry - making sure it did not touch the skin. Rinse it off well - and the hair feels soft and silky and should be really clean and white. This used to bring Ishtar's tail up a treat. Fullers earth used to be the main ingredient for talcum powder - not sure if it still is. |

i know afew "purducers" (not arab ones) who recconmend washing up liquid :/ and being on other forums people do actually use it :o
yeah head and shoulders is nasty used it when i was like 12 (along time ago haha) and i had the greasiest hair and such itchy scalp it was crazy
i agree i have used number of "for greys" horse shampoos and they have been of poor result :( best i found but i cant seem to get it no more is a purple one in a big bottle, fab stuff :D |

Yes, I did use Tesco cheap shampoo and not washing up liquid, also I only washed his tail and didnt put any shampoo on his dock or skin area just to be on the safe side.
Also, thats very interesting about head and shoulders! I won some in our school raffle and I usually buy my shampoo from the hairdressers anyway I started using this Head and shoulders and straight away I got an itchy scalp to thepoint were it scabbed
needless to say it went in the bin.

Echo the warning about Head & Shoulders!!!! It shouldn't be used on humans either.......it is lethal stuff! Any time my husband has used it, he ends up very itchy and irritated. Years ago when I did hairdressing training, we we warned against it and told that it is so strong you could use it as a perm lotion for curling the hair! |

You should NEVER use Head and Shoulders on animals!!!
I work in a kennels and it's extremely harmful especially to dogs and horses!!! It has a chemical in it which is poisonous to animals!!!
