Posted - 09 Feb 2010 : 2:33:00 PM I have asked Rui if he would lock the Fantastica thread. It is very very sad and you have all left such lovely comments it is time to move on. I realised I had given the filly a name used before, Blondie! so we have called her Ingrid after the vet who saved her. We often change the name and this name has much meaning now. She goes out in the sand school for a gallop, Syd the ram lamb has to stay behind, these pics will show you why!! Ingrid is doing really well and we are still very tired but feel more confident everything will work out. I want to thank the PM's and sorry if I havent got back to them all, I am so exhausted.
I have a lovely loan mare coming soon, who we hope will be able to nanny Ingrid and Syd, so we will keep you posted.
Thank you to everyone again.

Posted - 11 Feb 2010 : 6:03:27 PM Sue So sorry that you lost your lovely mare but the filly is a credit to her and you and John. I know how worrying and distressing it is to hand rear a foal and hard work, but luckily when my mare rejected I did get a foster mum. I loved all your mares when I saw them last summer. Can't wait to see some more photos of Ingrid and hopefully see her in the flesh in the summer. Paulette x |

Posted - 11 Feb 2010 : 09:45:18 AM I have just found the original post... Sue I am so sorry - that sounds like you had the most horriffic time, every breeders nightmare. But what a wonderful legacy she has left you with in her babies, and I'm sure this little lady will be one you cherish for a long time. Hugs x |

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 6:40:16 PM Oh Sue you poor thing, I bet you are stressed . Really hope that your sheperdess arrives soon so that you can start to get a bit of rest again.
That poem has brought a lump to my throat but it's so beautiful and very apt.
I think that there will be an insatiable desire for photos of little Ingrid and master Cyd from now on .

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 4:54:55 PM What a lovely thing to say BBA. Thank you.
Yes it is lovely and I am taking it for granted as they cuddle up together daily after a feed. I forget how other people would view the picture too. My problem is when I go in the stable they jump up as mummy milkmaid is here, once the auto milker arrives I might be able to get some better pics without the cobbled foal rug on,(too long) my sewing is dreadful and it does spoil the pic.
How I got that pic is I crept up on them, opened the stable door quick and snapped away fast! Also, remember there are loads of lovely people out there who have been through this trauma. I'm lucky to have my camera on hand and be at home. Taking the photos is my way of de-stressing, I am very stressed at the moment too.

MY GRANDEST FOAL ~ Author Unknown ~
I'll lend you for a little while my grandest foal, He said. For you to love while she's alive and morn for when she's dead. It may be one or twenty years, or days or months, you see. But, will you, till I take her back, take care of her for me? She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and should her stay be brief, You'll have treasured memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return. But, there are lessons taught on earth I want this foal to learn. I've looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true. And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, with trust, I have selected you. Now will you give her your total love, nor think the labor vain, Nor hate Me when I come to take her back again? I know you'll give her tenderness and love will bloom each day. And for the happiness you've known forever grateful stay. But should I come and call for her much sooner than you'd planned You'll brave the bitter grief that comes and someday you'll understand. For though I'll call her home to Me this promise to you I do make, For all the love and care you gave she'll wait for you, inside Heaven's Gate.

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 3:03:05 PM What a great picture Sue. It is extraordinary the tests we get landed with in life and how it has a habit of tearing our hearts out one day and making us weep with relief, caring and tenderness the next. What a very special relationship the two animals have!
We're all going to be following Ingrid's progress from now on - and Syd's!!
Well done to you and John - man in a million!! |

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 12:59:21 PM I think rammy is only a week old. My farmer nextdoor has so many lambs it was a case of picking the strongest looking one for us. He is meant to go back to the farm, but I fear he won't
I did wonder if he was too old, and yes I remember using a 'birdizza' (sp) on two pet calf's we had here, interesting to say the least!
At the moment Ingrid is very playful and even we are cautious!!
Thanks to the help about getting a 'shepherdess milker' they are heated milk buckets with teats that Ingrid can help herself from. I will need it soon, it is on order and can't wait to stop feeding every two hours. I couldn't face giving her cold milk.
Thanks for the help.....again |

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 10:45:31 AM Hi Sue, not sure how old Cyd is, but he may be too old to use castrating rings. It is best to use these when they are about 48hrs old. If you want him to have "rammy" tendencies, then you could leave him for a while. Personally I don't like the rubber rings as they cause quite a bit of pain - you can ask your vet to do it - local anaesthetic and the use of an implement called a "burdeso" (spelling probably wrong) - this is a clamping device with blunt ends - used to be called the "painless castration method" but I think this was an overstatement. If your vet recommends an open castration then you will need to do it before (or after) the fly season. Ram lambs can be quite defensive of their "flock" as they grow older and can give you a very painful "butt". My worst injury was sustained by a Ram (long story) so they need to be treated with respect. My old mare used to have sheep as companions at one time. She was great with them but she did tend to round them up into various corners just to remind them she was boss. Let me know if you want a friend for Cyd - our lambs aren't due until June though. |

I've just caught up with this and your other thread. So sorry to hear your sad news but thrilled to see how well Ingrid and her new friend are doing. Keep up the good work and we look forward to seeing many more wonderful pictures in the future.

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 10:23:25 AM Hi Vera, we got a ram lamb because knowing how naughty and playful foals can be, rammy might be able to put up with it better! My neighbour banded his tail but forgot his bits!! he will be down soon to do them for us.
There are some lessons we have learnt from all of this. Insure our mares, even if only a nominal sum, have powdered colostrum and milk on stand by. Most importantly, remember how helpful people are, especially those that post on here. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 08:47:19 AM Ahhhhhh, she is absolutely beautiful, I am sorry I have missed this story completely as not been on for over a week, but she is the most beautiful foal and the picture of the foal and the lamb is fabulous is it okay if I can get my O/H to print it off and get it framed as I really think its the most beautiful picture I have ever seen they say a picture says a thousand words and that one truly does big hugs and blessings to your beautiful foal |

Posted - 10 Feb 2010 : 07:27:42 AM Sue, I have only just caught up with this tragedy come miracle. My thoughts are with you all. I have had an orphan who passed away last May. I had to bring him up on the bottle and he was my best friend for 23 years. One has to be very firm with them so that they grow up being a horse. Good luck and if you would like any help (too far away to be physical) please email me.
It is wonderful that you mananged to save the foal. Poor Tina had this happen to Luda but they were unable to save the foal.
