Following on from Angelarab's post about her filly who cut herself a month ago I have staarted despairing about my TB mare.

Back in oct she was startled by some deer jumping into her field. She galloped at full tilt up throught the field, straight throught the top fence (post and rail), straight through the chicken run (electrified netting) down the lane where she flipped over and slid 150yds on her back with legs straight up in the air, staggered to her feet fll against the field fence and fell over hitting her head on a fence post and momentarily knocking herself our, crased into feild fence on other side, staggered back throug fence into another field hitting her head so hard she snapped the round post. nad continued careering around that field until OH and I managed to catch her. She had blood coming from all over her face and legs. OH had witnessed the whole thing and had phoned me to get me home quickly to help him.

Long story short, she had
*ripped half her top lip off,
*grazed her gums from sliding on her face,
*had pucnture wounds and friction burns on her withers from slidding along on her back in her rug and getting gravel underneath
*Cut her fetlock on the off side
puncture wound on near side fetlock down to tendon
* Skinned her near cannon and nicked her tendon.
*broken her nasal bone
Here we are in January and all cuts and bones have healed EXCEPT the near side cannon. Which has partailly healed and then produced copious amounts of proud flesh each time we felt we were getting somewhere.

Here is a pic from about 3 wks ago one bandage change after having the pround flesh cut back a second time (slightly distorted as I was holding her when I took pic)

Now the middle of the wound has opened as apparently the tissue has granulated in some parts to the tendon (where it was nicked) and as she moves it pulls apart

last bandage change on Friday. (hadn't been cleaned off in this one, just as the bandage came off)

Compared to Angelarabs filly we are way behind, esp as her filly is 4/5 weeks from injury and ours is about 15 We think (hope) we are now on top of the proud flesh but the treatment for that slows the skin cells so it is a catch-22 situation Also she now has a pressure sore on the back from all the pressure bandages neede for proud flesh.

The irony is that she retired from racing in June as a 5yo having raced 32 times with not a mark on her!

But will it ever heal?????????

Scarlet foaled last night. No fuss, no bother and she was totally straightforward. Foal was born, up and sucking and the mare cleansed all within an hour!

Scarlet was really really good, she didn't mind us helping her and accepted the foal straight away. She didn't jump up straight after like some maidens but lay and let the foal break the cord which meant it got all of the blood transfused. She was a little bit surprised to see a small horse lay behind her and didn't call to it but once she was up she licked it and cleaned it up. The foal was bright and after two attempts was up and quickly went to suck. Scarlet is a twitchy tickly mare but she was so good and you could see she was really trying not to squeal and lash out.

Only problem, it's a FILLY

I will get some pics and post them on New Arrivals once I have them.

So pleased that her leg has healed so well, what a very sad story about her best friend but i am pleased that she now has a new pal, good luck with foaling and looking forward to photos.

So glad to hear her leg is healing, that is such a sad story about her field friend, still she will have a lovely baby to look after soon.
Arabi was frantic when I had Fen pts for a whole week he would run to where she laid and stand there for ages looking very confused it was very sad.
Goldenmane Posted - 30 Jan 2011 : 1:42:18 PM
That is so sad, poor mare and unborn foal. Must have been the best thing for Scarlet to be able to say goodbye, in her own way, and now look after a new mare...and not long before she has a lot to keep her occupied.
Jamana Posted - 30 Jan 2011 : 1:26:43 PM
Thank you for your kind comments

Another very sad thing happened to this mare recently,(thankfully it hasn't affected her health tho) Before the injury she was out with a mare that had had a very bad injury herself and that meant she head previously been on 12mth box rest, plaster casts,G/A's the lot. Well Scarlet liked her and when she came back from Ireland that mare was on the lorry as well, they remembered each other still after all the time Scarlet had been incarcerated inside and were delighted to meet again. They spent the trip back from Ireland with their noses touching and from that day were completely devoted to each other. The mare helped Scarlet fit back into the herd and looked after her when the others all ganged up. Scarlet spent all summer walking around behind her friend with that mares tail on her ears and head. The only way we could treat Scarlet with the vet was if her friend was there touching her nose and reassuring her.

Three weeks ago there was a terrible thunderstorm and the mares were all out in it. When OH went to feed them in the morning Scarlet and her friend were reluctant to come over. Finally Scarlet did come, and the OH could see what was wrong. Scarlet's friend was stood in the field in obvious pain and OH's thoughts were confirmed very soon by the vet. The mare had broken her thigh bone and only course of action was PTS. She was 2 months off foaling, due the same day as Scarlet. Scarlet stood with her friend though all the vet's examinations (despite her own hatred of vets!) and touched noses whilst the x-rays were done in the field. She was stood with her over OH's shoulder as her friend was injected and PTS. There was no-one to take the body away for 2 hrs and Scarlet stood with the body all that time, just touching her almost like she was kissing her. When she was fially taken, Scarlet watched and then followed the truck down the field and watched at the gate. She never called once.

She was so sad and is only now really seeming happy again, the mare that was left in field was a new arrival and has finally started to pal up with her, and now they are coming in they are in a different group and Scarlet has a new friend that SHE looks after.

At times Scarlet is a total nightmare but underneath she is nice kind mare.

Jamana Posted - 28 Jan 2011 : 10:14:40 PM
Well it is a long time since I was posting on this topic and it seems an age ago, but reading this brings it all back.

For those of you that took the time and trouble to post and PM on this subject

here are some pic's of 'Scar-leg' taken today as she comes in to await foaling.....

The Leg

The girl herself

Thank you once again for all of the support from AL there really was a point where I didn't she would make it. But now I am so looking forward to seeing her foal.I was brushing her off today and watching it jumping about, there were so many days where it seemed so unlikely to ever get to this point. I will post pics when she does finally foal. Due March 22nd.

Hi Jamana,

I know this is too late to help your mare now butW we have found a product by the name of CutHeal to be very good especially where proud flesh is concerned. It comes in either a powder or gell form. The powder has a lovely lemon smell to it when you puff it on and the idea is to leave it on for 24 hours it forms a crust over the wound which stops the flys and drys up the exposed part of the wound as healing comes from underneath. After 24 hours wash it off and reapply and this is what helps to remove the proud flesh.

We were originally put onto it by a show judge.

Glad to hear that she is in foal

cmj- I certainly hope she produces a cracker of a colt to make up for all she has put us through!

Keren, Thanks. How is the lovely Jamana? Can't believe it is 9 mths you have had her now! It seems like a lifetime ago and yesterday at the same time

Good news! What a relief for you. Hope the "Scarleg" foal makes up for the monetary pain! C

Thought I would update this thread.

Scarlet (or Scar-leg as she is now referred to!!) went to Ireland on the 17 Feb and I haven't set eyes on her since, but I am told the LEG HAS HEALED and I think they are turning her out now. I bet she is thrilled.

But, best of all I have just had an e-mail telling me she is IN FOAL!! She had not cycled at all until she was finally ready to cover on 16 March, and after only 1 covering has gone in foal. I cannot believe it and I am so pleased. Not to mention relieved as at e30/day she is costing an arm and a leg on keep and I haven't seen a vet bill from them yet

My other TB mare who foaled in Jan has been home back in foal for nearly a month!

So all being well we should have a foal next March by this man
