Posted - 26 Dec 2009 : 4:03:14 PM Karens Kharisma is an Anglo daughter of our old boy whom we lost June this year. Kharisma belongs to a friend of ours and was born here and has stayed for her almost 21years.
She came in lame christmas eve with bruising to the bulb of her heel Very lame today so Vet called in. We suspected foot infection...found nothing..nerve blocked...still very lame. No swelling or sign of any injury elsewhere on her leg. Flexed her leg backwards, which really hurt her. Suspected pelvic damage....internal examination revealed nothing...so, suspected fracture of the femur and said she should be PTS
Gave her massive bute, after which she was weight bearing and walking on that leg. Still has not ruled out fracture.....
Another Vet out tomorrow..... worried sick for this beautiful kind and trusting mare. We know if she has a fracture we have no alternative but to say goodbye....but I am not at all convinced....and feel she should be given more time and a snap decision without proof is not the way to go. Her distraught owner, breeder is in bits.
Please send healing vibes for this lovely kind mare who deserves more time and a chance to get better. Hopefully vets are not always right

Posted - 06 Feb 2010 : 10:38:15 AM Poor Karisma but at least you know it is only an abcess and it will get better ..... eventually. It has been 3 months now since Fayre had hers and she seems back to normal now at 27 and with Cushings so I am sure you will get there.
Keep us posted. Big hugs |

Posted - 04 Feb 2010 : 10:55:47 AM Hi Ros...Well, we are six weeks down the line now and Kharisma is still not right......after continued box rest, recurring abscess X-Rays etc etc., and Vet visits twice/three times weekly, we are beginning to wonder when this is all going to resolve. Karen, her owner, like us has been extremely worried.
We had ten days completely sound, so she was allowed out in the menage whilst her box was being mucked out. She had great fun...bucking and leaping and squealing...what a relief!!! Came back in totally sound. Next day, seemed a little uncomfortable and Monday, really lame again. [arg
The X-Rays two weeks ago revealed nothing wrong whatsoever with Pedal Bone, Navicular Bone etc., We are assured this is just a stubborn abscess and she will get better. What a star this little mare has been when she has been in so much pain.
Today, we are again sound....no further puss in the foot........so, fingers crossed (Vet reckoned she had bruised the heel with her charging about in the menage) ?? we may at long last have the problem finally sorted.
Your kind thoughts much appreciated, especially by Kharisma`s owner, Karen

Posted - 04 Feb 2010 : 10:22:22 AM Hi Babs, sorry your gorgeous girl is having a rough time. It's almost worse when they're so tough, you worry about how much pain they've been in without showing it! I'm thinking of you. It's really tough when they're ill, especially when you question your vets thinking. You really need someone on side who will listen to you and has enough experience to successfuly mix the new with the old from a diagnositics and treatment perspective. Wishing you both all the best Ros xxx |

Posted - 04 Feb 2010 : 09:41:13 AM Babs, so sorry to hear this is still going on, as some of you may remember I used to take in rescues, often having long standing foot problems, I have seen many abcesses burst through the coronet and none to date became quittor, I wish her speedy recovery and a big hug to you all,

Posted - 15 Jan 2010 : 7:00:58 PM I know exactly what you are going through at the moment. My mare Maiad has just yesterday had surgery on her foot after an abcess that appeared 7 weeks ago, it to burst out of the coronary band and she had a massive course of antibiotics which did not do much. It ended up in the pedal bone and she had surgery yesterday removing loads of foot which could take about 9 months to grow back. Try to keep positive she will get there in the end, i will keep my fingers crossed for youx |

Posted - 15 Jan 2010 : 4:38:02 PM OMG babs!! This is terrible.. I cant believe they didnt give her antibiotics to start with.. My horse Dillon is prone to foot absesses, luckily managing to catch them before reaching the coronany band..1 of them resulted in the entire sole being removed and digging under the frog aswell..
I really hope your poor girl recovers quickly. Good luck and take care

Posted - 15 Jan 2010 : 4:22:16 PM Vet came out and X rayed Kharisma`s hoof. Just had phone call to say pedal bone OK, so sign of hairline fracture. It appears just an extremely deep seated infection.
Got to take her to Vet Clinic Monday next for treatment
Fingers crossed......Kharisma will make a full recover from this really painful abscess. Poor girl, she has suffered so much pain this last three weeks. Thank goodness she is made of tough stuff
Still a real worry until the problem is completely resolved
Will keep you updated and thank you all for your kind words, such comfort, whilst going through such a roller coaster of emotions

Posted - 15 Jan 2010 : 2:39:34 PM Only just caught up with this, keep the faith - it must be so frustrating especially when your instincts have been proved correct. They should have given her antibiotics as you said, just hoping and praying that she will soon recover - and with such dedicated people looking out for her I'm sure she will. Sending a little prayer Alix |

Posted - 15 Jan 2010 : 12:18:47 AM Well why doesnt this surprise me ? I am sure a good bit of hot tubbing (with plenty of epsom salts in) and perhaps a dry animal lintex will make a good improvement.Obviously she will need anti-biotics as well,if the abscess has burst in the foot and then on the coronary it is infected. Is there a vet you could get a 2nd opinion from?I have 2 great vets but must admit feet are the one thing we fall out over.I have had several burst on the coronary and never suffered with quittor on any of them. Some of these foot abcess take months to realy clear up.Hydrogen of peroxide is great for when it just need keeping clean.I am sure your gut instinct will be right.just out of curiousity how old is your vet ? I think generally vets these days are on the doom and gloom trip, nothing is ever simple. good luck and let us know how she goes. |

Posted - 14 Jan 2010 : 7:22:52 PM WELL AFTER ALMOST THREE WEEKS, MATTERS SEEM WORSE!!!! I am beginning to lose all faith in Vets. Several visits later and we are now being told Kharisma has quittor as the abscess has burst out through her coronary band
When she went lame for a second time we asked for anti biot treatment to help with the infection, which Vet said was not necessary!!
Now gone lame a third time....abcess has tracked up and puss came out at coronary.
QUITTOR....I do not think so!! Now talk of X rays, hospitalisation surgery etc., and possibly four months veterinary care
Going out of my mind with worry and feel all this could have been avoided with anti biot treatment which we asked for two weeks ago
HELP!!!!!
