Posted - 03 Dec 2009 : 7:12:56 PM Feel bad putting these up with the Buffy thread still so uncertain but it has made me feel so grateful and sad at the same time if that makes any sense at all.
So here are a couple of pics taken in the last couple of weeks, I can't believe how much he has grown ! K is dropping a bit of weight as she always does in winter so I'm stuffing her to the gunnels with good food and hay and guess will have to start the dreaded weaning in the not too distant future .

Posted - 09 Dec 2009 : 08:49:52 AM Jamana, this is the thought that is occuring to me although she never goes more than a few feet from him. They've not been out of sight of each other at all. I think I'm going to forget about it until after Christmas as he still loves to be with her and she certainly isn't fed up with him yet either!
Thank you Mogwai and Leiat !

Posted - 09 Dec 2009 : 06:49:47 AM As he goes out with his mum and his nanny could you put mum out in a field away from them and leave him in his normal routine but with only granny for company? I feel this is the easiest and least stressful way. Constantly seperating and reuniting seems a little stressful and to my mind could leave them a little confused and sometimes a bit clingy, wondering if mum is going to disapear again! |

Posted - 07 Dec 2009 : 10:29:20 PM Jane, the stud's youngsters are all about 2 years old now and like I say enormous great horses, they would eat him for breakfast I fear . I'm doing some serious mulling over at the moment but no hurry to make any decisions certainly this side of Christmas.
Roseanne, I probably won't ride K over the winter as the little chap is still with her and she needs to keep all her energy to maintain her weight whilst she refuses to wear a rug grrrr norty girl.
I put them in separate stables about 3 apart this morning and he had the right hump , kept kicking the wall and boinging around, then snorting over the door . I do wonder whether this is a harder way in some respects as it sort of prolongs the stress? Although K isn't stressed at all, I think she quite likes a bit of time away from him ho ho !

Posted - 07 Dec 2009 : 10:05:24 PM Nice to be able to do the weaning gently Jen. It's good that you've got plenty of time - no pressure to show until you want to - it's expensive too!! Lots of handling now and invisibly instilling the commands he'll use later will make things easy when the time comes .
Will you be riding K this winter? Hopeless weather here for riding off-road at the moment. |

Posted - 06 Dec 2009 : 7:06:45 PM He sounds very like Ali Jen !
I do know what you mean - Ali was bored witless with just Chiya and Aunty Tash for company, and he got away with murder, which I wasn't happy with.
He is now in a bigger herd where the other mares have taught him a few manners and he's got my yearling to play with - and play they do, all the time (I've been through a few rugs though )
It's a shame there weren't any other foals born there this year - would they consider 'lending' one of their youngsters to run with him & K so they could form a bond (help with weaning too)? |

Posted - 05 Dec 2009 : 10:45:35 PM Ah thank you!
Tell the truth I'm not sure what to do with him when he gets a bit older. The yard I'm at is a stud farm but all their youngsters are at least a year old and in an established herd out at the back of the farm. If he just stays in with K he has her and a 26year old pony as playmates and to be honest they ain't much fun for him!
I want to keep him with me, but at the same time I feel he would really benefit from being in a bigger, younger herd to learn all the rules and get put in his place a bit (K and the granny mare let him get away with murder).
I would love to show him but am scared to death of that sort of thing, so maybe he needs to go to someone who could do all that for me? There is lots of food for thought over the long winter months for sure ! |

Posted - 04 Dec 2009 : 12:18:42 PM Nikki he hasn't got anything to chop off at the moment so he's safe for now !
As for the weaning, one of the other liveries is after the foaling box and would like me to do it the 'quick' way but I'm steadfast and will do it when THEY are well and truly ready. They ate breakfast in separate boxes this morning (next to each other) and were both fine. Back together in the field now. I'm not even really bothered about weaning him at all as they will both stay with me forever (all things being equal) I just need to be able to take her out for the odd hack and know he will be happy to be left for an hour or so. They will be in the same field together so things will pretty much bumble along as they are.
Eventually I hope he will go to the lovely Roseanne (if she still wants him ) to be backed but that is a loooooonnnnggg way off yet ! |

Photos to be proud of and I bet he is even more handsome in the flesh (if at all possible). He certainly has presence about him....
I agree with Callisto, let mum decide when it is time to wean. Less stress and worry for everyone involved |

Just a thought - we only homebred one, and our mare weaned him herself when she decided she'd had enough (when he was about 8 months old) |
