Still searching for this GREY mare and information of her breeding and existance in the 1920 ies???, We believe she was bred and owned by Mrs A S Russell, a NPS member in 1928,and who lived at that time at Longfrey, Chilworth, Near Guildford, Surrey. The following entries are all things that need looking at and into, so if anyone can add to the notes and search for this half bred mare, that was at the London Show in 1928. and might be recorded as a polo pony ( Gymkanaha Classes??). and who bred some of the most famous of Riding Pony lines ever known in this country. Hi anyone add any info for this mare please, she's said to be by a pure bred Arab/Barb and out of a Thoroughbred. She's the dam of Valentine, (in the Bwlch Valentino Line)and could have been bred in Dorset or Gloucestershire...or come as an import.. Any breeding welcome. thank you. Sue

Posted - 17 Sep 2013 : 10:26:19 PM Mrs Russell kept Thoroughbreds several of them. Have found a Mr A. Russell in Ireland at the turn of the century.1890/1900 as keeping horses in GSB.
Just maybe Alexander was also in India in 1894. 1894 RUSSELL Alexander Sherwood late Madras Public Works Dept Trained at RIE Coll joined the service 1st Oct 1875 asst to chief engr and under sec to govt irrign branch in 1882 exec engr April 1886 retd June 1899.

Class 41 RIDING CLASS - ANGLOARAB or PARTBREDARAB STALLIONS , MARES and GELDINGS of any age, entered or accepted for entry in the Anglo-arab and Partbred Arab register.
266 MRS. A.S.Russel, Longfrey,Chilworth, near Guildford,Surrey. Valentine (Novice) (Anglo-Arab), grey colt, 5 years old. Sire:Malice (G.S.B Vol 26, p 1,335) Dam: Silver Spray (Anglo-Arab) (NPS A.M.R. p 388) Bred by Mrs A.S.Russel.
And in Class 5, TWO-YEAR OLD FILLIES There i a handwritten note : Late entry Silver Lass by L'ete Indiene (grey arab stallion,(Licensed under Horse Breeding Act 1918) Dam Silver Spray (Anglo-Arab).

Posted - 24 Sep 2010 : 09:41:59 AM Still nothinmg more on Silverspray, the chap from Hurlingham is still away on holiday, he goes to New England for the Summer and not back yet, but this I have had from the London branch..nothing to report..maybe the fact that she(Silverspray had a nasty splint has kept her out the showing from that time...still mor to find on this mare and if there is a link between Mary Russell & Mrs Russell. Reply from Hurlingham Archives. I went through the National Polo Stud books for 1928 and the years before and after it and there was no record of Silverspray that I could find. I did find mention of Silverdale in multiple places (variations on Silverdale, a horse than won many honors). I also had the Jan-March 1928 issues of The Polo Monthly including coverage of the annual national horse show but again no mention of a horse of Silverspray. I did not have any Hurlingham programs for 1928 but only 1927 (and other years). I did not have a Polo Calendar for 1928 unfortunately (I only have 3 of them which were published annually by The Polo Monthly). The net results is that I could not come with any mention of Silverspray. The year perhaps is incorrect because if it were truly a famous mare, it would pop up somewhere in The National Polo Stud books. See if Sue Evans has any more details to trace this horse as I have come up empty handed but am sure I must have something in my collection if I could get more details.

Notes on the Quantock from H & H. 2004. Report mentions 1902... Hunt facts: Quantock Staghounds Hunt: dates from 1902, but really started in its present shape in 1917. Then the government of the day paid Col Sir Dennis Boles MP for the upkeep of four horses, 10 couple of hounds and the wages of two men for a season, to re-establish the Quantock Red Deer herd, which had become reduced to about 35 due to poaching and the wartime shortage of meat. The herd now numbers more than 600 and
Sir Dennis Boles, served in India in the war and married Monica, from Ruckley Grange...this is about 1 mile from me...what a small world.
Lieutenant-Colonel Dennis Coleridge Boles (4 June 1885 – 25 April 1958) Dennis Boles was the son of Francis James Coleridge Boles (brother of Sir Dennis Boles) of Rackenford Manor, Devon and Charlotte Jones (sister of Walter Jones). He was educated at Eton, where he was President of "Pop", and set a record score of 183 in the Eton v Harrow cricket natch at Lord's in 1904. He also played cricket for Devon in the Minor Counties Championship between 1903 and 1909.[1] After Sandhurst, where he won the Sword of Honour, he was commissioned in the 17th Lancers and served in India. In the Great War he served on the Staff of the 5th Indian Cavalry Brigade in France, and then saw active service in France and Ireland as Adjutant of the 17th Lancers. Dennis was a noted polo player, winning the Coronation Cup for the 17th Lancers against an Argentine team in 1922, and playing for the British Army against the American Army in 1925. I found a Mr Alexander Sherwood Russell, a British Engineer working in Madras,India in 1898, wonder if this gent was linked to Mrs Russell, that just might explain the link with India and these imports. Mother also found a handwritten paper in a book, (Mr Jorrocks Jaunts and Jollities) that used to belong to my greatgrandmother.The handwriting is very bad but I have tried to get it right! Hollyland...Not a long shot, your right on the money. Thanks You. Grey Metal 1931. NPS.XXIII (1937 -1939) page.14. He won at :- 1938 London Show NPS.+ Gold Medal. & 1st.NPS + Gold Medal at RASE. In 1939, he repeated the winning at both of these shows.....So Mrs Russell was definately switched on to the showing world.. Great bit (lot) of info. He was a Thoroughbred (Vol.XXVII, p420 (Vol.22. and NPS 1997.Vol.XXII, p.14 + pic.by Sports & General.
Also Rosine has several foals by the above horse GREY METAL and used a lot at Bostock Hall Cheshire and Capt.Hayhurst. will see what I can find... -----------------------------------------------------
Thanks Pelle for sorting out the pic of SILVERSPRAY, have you any idea what she was doing at Hurlington in 1928, was there a programme or any paperwork. I've emailed the Club to see if they have any old records and see if they can turn anything up too.

Also think that Miss Russell rode Silverspray at the London Spring Show in 1928, while owned by Mrs Russell, so please keep at it and Thanks again for your continued help. Mrs Russell was a member of the NPS in April 1928. I'ver started a list of horses these two kept,in case they show a link in anyway. Cheers Sue

Silverspray's breeder, Mrs A.S.Russell, Longfrey,Chilworth,Guildford, Surrey, bred a filly in 1944 called 'Bay Belle' Vol XXV.( on Allbreeds now). She showed one of her other stock at Surrey County Show in 1946.Is there any sprightly, say ,80 year old out there who would remember this lady and her stock. She used some of the best lines.Any true pony mad girl living locally would have noticed them. Bay Belle's grandmother was Silver Wedding by Malice.No dam of Silver Wedding given in this registration. (Was about to delete this as not many 80 year olds use computers but maybe those who do may know of likely people to ask! Worth a try.)

Has anyone got the NPS register for early in the 1920 's can they look at pg 388 for Silverspray (or Silver Spray) Please and confirm what it says. and Also the PBAR Vol.IV and confirm there what it says about her off springs..and herself..please
There seems to be Arab in the line and I'd like to know who they have listed for that blood.
Also, If an TB stallion ( like Malice) covered mares in the 1930 ies, as he did, will all the services be listed against him some where, can anyone tell me...and maybe the Polo register number just might help with tracking there matings down.. Thanks. Sue

Posted - 06 Nov 2009 : 7:43:06 PM My mother found a photo of a mare called Silverspray in my grandmothers photoalbums, unfortunely in another album there is the same photo of Silverspray (with the note: grey barb mare born 1923, 14.1hh , auntie Hilda's wedding gift from emir Hussein Niazin, Constantine, Algeria, was hunted sidesaddle for nine seasons with Quantock staghounds, them dam of several foals by polopony stallions.) (according to family records, auntie Hilda was married in 1925 to an algerian diplomat, and lived in Devon for 20 years and then returned to Algeria)

Such a shame, when I worked for Mrs. Alexander we had all the early NPS books. She was in charge of the Stud Book for some years - all gone now! Finding these threads quite emotional as taking me back to the 60s and working with Bwlch Zephyr (Miss Ferguson) when these old horses were right to the front of the pedigrees. Now virtually forgotten. It always amazes me that they can be pushed into history so easily. R
