A local riding school is currently using the field next to ours for a 38 year old horse to live out her "last summer" before being pts next month. She has taught 100's of people to ride in her lifetime. Since she's been in the field (since March time) they've only been up to see her once or twice (she didn't have water so I've been regularly filling it up) and nobody could get anywhere near her. I felt so sorry for her that I decided i'd try and spend time with her. It didn't take long and she now waits for me, and comes straight up to me for a cuddle and scratch, and when I leave she stands at the fence calling for awhile. I'm really bonding with her, and my neighbour told me I need to be careful about getting too attached given what will be at the end of the summer.
She suffers from terrible mud fever and I know it would be cruel in many senses to keep her going over the winter when it gets so boggy but I am just so sad that at the end of her life she has just been left like this. |

 As much as I know it could have been worse for her,still it is so sad....Rip Shamrock and this goes to you  you must feel awful,I am and never knew her! |

Very sad news and I know how upset you must be, but at least you had a lovely few months together. She is so like our Jim the Cob - maybe they will find each other over the Rainbow Bridge. |

Just wanted to add one last final update. Shamrock was PTS last week. RIP beautiful mare who taught me so much in such a short time. |

Such a shame that not all horses get to have a good friend like you through their final summer, and I agree it would be impossible not to get too attached and no doubt you will shed a bucket load of tears but would you have it any other way? I get leaky eyes just thinking about it.
I'm hoping to take on an older lady -I'm going to see her tomorrow- and seeing your original post was what made my mind up as I would have loved to give her a home but being so far away it would have been too much to ask of her, like everything in life it's a bit of a gamble but she needs a home and I have a bit of space in the field and............ enough said as getting really soppy now. Good luck and enjoy those big horsey hugs as long as they last. |

What im enjoying is that she used to watch every move i made and now I can potter around her without her having a care in the world. She's always happy to nuzzle me (she can get her neck right round me like a big horsey hug aha!) and loves a good scratch. I have been warned once more "not to get attatched" but to be honest I think I'd have to be heartless not to. |

I understand, I had my old TB PTS in the field and would do the same for Zarello, Cornwall is a long way for a horse with Arthritis to travel, I suppose that it is something we all have to face one day, and that death is inevitable for every living thing.. I am sure she will know nothing of it, and is enjoying your love and attention xx |

Agree with you Pat...the best place for this regal old Lady is to stay right where she is now. She looks to be in good condition and is getting all the love, care and companionship
by her new found friend. As Pheebs says, as and when her time comes, she will cross the Rainbow Bridge peacefully and with dignity.
What more could we wish for a mare who has given many years pleasure and is now reaping the reward of a happy and relaxed retirement with her guardian angel taking care of her.
Big hugs for you Pheebs, you are doing a sterling job and I am sure that wonderful old lady appreciates her time spent in your company being cossetted and loved.

I know its still very sad but i just wanted to people to know that if I even suspected she was going to have an awful end I'd buy her immediately regardless of age/health problems/personal situation and put her to rest myself. |

Just to clarify I do not believe this mare is intended for a slaughter house, she will be put to rest peacefully and correctly.

I do not agree with this situation but, I hope she will not be taken away.
Best case scenerio out of this terrible thing is, for it to be done in the field where she is now, so she does not become stressed in her last hours.

Jackiedo that is so kind of your to offer but I'm not sure it'd be fair on her to make her travel that far. We are right at the bottom of Cornwall so it'd take a horse box a couple of days to get there.
I just don't feel she's up to it especially with so many horses needing homes at the moment that could be a companion for you. Please don't think I'm not grateful for the offer and I know it's not really my decision to make but personally I don't think it's be what's best for her at her age.
It's a horrible situation. But as I've said before I have now accepted the situation for what it is and continue to make a fuss of her so she knows how special she is until her final hour.

If they really loved her and cared for her would they leave her there completely on her own?Is she on anything to ease her arthritis?she looks remarkably healthy and plump for her age,can she walk albeit stiffly?Why do they have so many horses if they can't take care of them properly?As you said,no excuse... |

Hi Gerri
Sorry haven't updated in awhile had a manic week and things are slowly starting to go back to normal. I've been really unwell plus received my A level results this week so had sleepless nights in the lead up to that. Have been helping my neighbour ease back in to taking care of her horses after her op but trying to make sure she doesnt do too much.
Shamrock is still friendly, cuddley, enjoying the carrots and seemingly content. I have learned that she has arthritus since I last updated which is apparently quite severe. I have been assurred that the owners love her and care for her, sounds to me like they just have too many horses. No excuse I know but lets face it we've all seen alot worse, and she's certainly in no danger when she's in the field next to mine as I check on her twice daily and would always notice if something was wrong.
Not sure when d-day for her is yet, trying to remain strong but i'll admit to my dear AL friends that I do often shed a tear for her. |
