AZTEQ
By Michelle Segre
We
first saw Azteq as a very young foal in 1998 at the Maxwell’s
sale. He caught my attention, being a very pretty foal with the
most enormous black liquid eyes, looking through the bars in the
stable. When I raised the point with my husband Hugh, he immediately
gave me that ‘we really don’t need another horse’ look,
and that was that. No bidding for me! I wasn’t surprised
when we later met up with our friends Liz and Bob Turner, to learn
that Liz also liked him. We have always had a very similar taste
in Arabian horses! Hugh and I were thrilled when the Turner’s
were successful in buying him. We visited as soon as possible
after he arrived with them to see this gorgeous little boy.

Azteq
was first shown as a yearling, where he was placed second at
the
Nationals. Since then, he has achieved numerous wins and
the Turner’s house is littered with trophies from Azteq’s
triumphs in Classic Head classes too. Azteq went on lease to
Halsdon Arabians in 2004. In 2006 he was Senior Male Champion
at the Wales & West show, Reserve Senior Male Champion
at the UK Gold and Supreme Champion at the Egyptian Event.
We have watched Azteq grow over the years into a magnificent
stallion with classic Arabian type and superb balance to his
structure. Not only is he stunningly beautiful but he is proving
to be an excellent sire.

He
has produced many winners and champions including AZHIQA (ex
Liz’s Maleshia. Azhiqa is a very attractive liver chestnut
mare who has emulated her parent’s success in the show
ring. She also won the Home Produced 4yo and over class at the
National show last year for her owner Diane Atkin. Azhiqa is
now broken to ride and will be competing in the novice classes
this year.

ASHEEQ (ex Maleshia) is a grey full sister to Azhiqa and is
own by Liz Turner. She achieved a very creditable 3rd place at
the UKIAHS in a class of eighteen fillies, behind stiff European
opposition.

DJESSIQA
(ex Djammal’s Lace) was bred by us and won her
very first outing at the Wales and West as a yearling. She was
sold to Saudi Arabia as a three year old.

ADDAYA (ex Casablanca Bint Djammal) also won at his first outing
at the Midland show as a yearling and was Supreme Champion at
the Norfolk and Suffolk group show for his new owner. He displays
the very best of both of his parents. A gorgeous boy with a particularly
beautiful, long neck.

ATTIQAH is a beautiful unshown two year old filly currently
available to purchase. Full sister to Addaya and a wonderful
mover too.

GERMANIKUS,
owned and bred by Sue Lawrence was supreme foal champion at
the SE Region autumn show in 2004 and Reserve Champion
at the Wessex Spring in 2005. The Lawrence’s filly DIVINE
PROMICE also won her class at the autumn show in 2006.

Azteq’s inbred outcross pedigree is very interesting from
a breeder’s point of view. His sire Borneo has an intensely
line bred pure Spanish pedigree. Both of Borneo’s parents
were Spanish National Champions, as was he, at two years old.
Borneo also obtained the British National Champion title whilst
in the UK. He was placed second at the Europeans and Nations
Cup and top 10 in the World Championships. He now resides back
in his native Spain.

Azteq’s
dam Ashiqa is the last daughter of the amazing Word Champion
mare Aliha, and by world reserve champion Crusader.
Ashiqa, along with her sire and dam were all British National
Champions. Not a bad family to be born into!

Many
of Azteq’s
babies are very tall. This trait probably coming through from
his grandsire Crusader, who must have been
one of the tallest Arabians in the world. Azteq puts on beautiful
heads, smooth, balanced bodies and a lovely temperament. All
of his babies are absolutely lovely to have around.
Azteq
has settled immediately into his holiday home and I’m
sure we will never tire of having such a stunning, kind ‘person’ calling
to us every time we walk onto the yard. Our twelve year old daughter
Amber wants to take him into the ridden show ring, saying that
his shoulder length mane and flowing tail would be amazing! I’ve
no doubt about that, but time constraints means that unfortunately
it won’t be possible just yet!
Azteq is available to outside mares alongside our Premium stallion
DJAMMAL, but, above all, we are really excited about the prospect
of putting him across our Djammal daughters again and our own
British National Champion Russian beauty Pjatakova.
We would like to thank Liz and Bob Turner for entrusting us
with their precious boy this year.
