EMIRATES ARABIAN INTERNATIONAL STAKES (GROUP 3) at
Brighton on 12th MAY 2004. The Race was over 7 furlongs.
GOING: Good
to Firm (firm in places)
RACE REPORT: Tony Brunton, who
finished second in the trainers championship last
year, got off to a winning start on the opening
day of the new season at Brighton on the 12th May
2004 when SHAHNGALI, ably ridden by Pierre Deymonaz,
came with a strong late challenge to take victory
by a neck from the locally trained KASPA, ridden
by Ryan Moore and trained by Mrs G S Moore for
owner Mrs M Calvert. KASPA looked all over the
winner until inside the final furlong when SHAHNGALI
finished strongly to take the prize in the last
few strides. The Bill Smith trained favourite,
BARAKA SHARLAP, was four lengths back in third
place, with the Alison Batchelor owned and trained
CAL KARAMAH (ARG) running well to take fourth place.
SHAHNGALI, formerly trained by Mrs G M Duffield
in 2003, looks capable of further success, while
the consistent five year old KASPA, a previous
winner at BRIGHTON, should soon make amends for
this narrow defeat.
RACE DESCRIPTON: For Purebred
Arabians, 4 yrs old and upwards. Prize money
and trophy presented by the Darley Stud Management
Company Ltd £1,600 to the winner, £950
to the second, £650 to the third, £400
to the fourth, £250 to the fifth, £150
to the sixth.
