MERLIN
DE CARRERE
WInning the Brunton Publications Apprentice Handicap Stakes
BRIEF RACE DETAILS.
THE BRUNTON PUBLICATIONS APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES
To be ridden by Apprentice Jockeys, SIX FURLONGS, for Purebred
Arabians, 4 year old and upwards, rated 60 -100.
Winner: MERLIN DE CARRERE
Owned by: The Day In Toulouse partnership, Trained by
Miss G Ward, Ridden by N Chalmers
Second: BAS HISAAN Owned by Mr A Coleman, Trained
by Mr G Kiff, Ridden by Charlotte Kerton
Third: MUTHAABER Owned by H. H. Sheik Hamdan
Bin R AL Maktoum, Trained by Mrs G M Duffield, Ridden by J F
MacDonald.
MUTHAABER started favourite on the strength of two impressive
wins at HEREFORD and EXETER but never looked like beating MERLIN
DE CARRERE (FR), who had the reputation of not being totally
straightforward, but ran on resolutely to hold off the persistent
challenge of BAS HISAAN.
BAS HISAAN has been totally out of form this season but, given
a good ride by Charlotte Kerton, put in a sound performance.
The tender handling of Miss Kerton seems to have brought out
the best in Bas Hisaan who has, in the past, looked a useful
performer.
MERLIN DE CARRERE (FR) won with something in hand, never looking
in real danger inside the final furlong. Once raced in France
when trained by F Rohaut, the Bay gelding by Dormane (FR) looks
to be at the top of his form.
