ARABIAN
RACING STALLIONS
BY PAUL SIMMONS
THE
RUSSIANS
My
favourite type of Arabian and to-date most of my mares have
been put to Russian stallions as they combine power, size,
type, action and speed whilst still retaining that unmistakable
Arabian presence. Pogojii was the first I used, then Vasilisk,
whilst I am waiting for a mare to foal to Div any day now
(she is already 3 weeks late)! Sambist I hope to use this
year as he has now sired his first Group winner (Juma, who
won the 12 furlong Group 2 “UAE Equestrian & Racing
Federation International Stakes” 2003). Once the favoured
bloodline for racing, it has now given way to French and
many Russian stallions are now rarely used for racing; although
their influence in the show ring is still strong. Below
are a list of Russian stallions currently standing at stud
with details of stud fee and contact number for those interested.
They are in no particular order of importance.

Div
(chestnut, 1985, 15.1hh) (AHS Premium Stallion)

A stunning
stallion with a lovely head, flamboyant movement and powerful
limbs. By the Nabeg son Peleng, out of the Pomerant’s
daughter Poprigunia, Div comes from a classy racing family.
Bred by the Tersk Stud Russia he raced for five seasons
in Russia and Britain. From 25 races he won twelve times
from 5 Furlongs to 2 1/2 Miles, he was also second twice
and third three times. He was a Grade 1 race and in 1990
he was leading 4-5 Year Old racehorse. As a sire he is also
excelling as all of his stock to have raced have won including
three times winning Jumah (x Samara Bint Samurai), CS Corsair
(x Ciarosa) and CS Jameel (x Priska), and dual winners Faleh
(x Vyp) and Divah (x Belle Epoque). My mare UFO, (Piechur
x Matsika) is due to foal any day to him, whilst his best
daughter to-date, Jumah, has just joined my stud to race
for me in 2004 before retiring to the paddocks and I am
hoping to have another mare in foal to him for 2005. A sire
to note and I believe he will be an influential broodmare
sire in years to come. Stud Fee £300 +VAT NFNF.

Dawwas
(1995, grey stallion, 15 hh)

A well made athletic individual, Dawwas is by the Straight
Russian stallion Pastor who is not available at public
stud but who has sired a succession of winners in UAE.
His dam, Eudoksja, is an influential broodmare at Umm
Qarnout of the Polish mare Etapka and by Pesennik who
is out of the Aswan daughter Pesnia. Dawwas is standing
his first season at stud this year and has won a string
of races in UAE including theHH Heir Apparent Sword, The
Emir’s Sword, the HH Heir Apparent Cup, the Ghazal
Al Shaqab Plate, HH Prime Minister’s Sword and the
Qatar Derby. An impressive list of victories against some
of the best horses in training, he is a tempting cross
for French mares and a viable alternative for those who
want to use non- French racing stallions. He shall be
covering Jumah in March. Stud Fee £600 (+VAT).

Vadeer
(grey, 1989, 15.2hh)

An incredibly tough and consistent stallion on the racetrack
by the Aswan son Mamluk, out of the Naftalin daughter Viola,
he is a beautiful, big moving stallion with lovely eyes.
He won 10 races from 26 starts and over $77,000, between
1993 and 1995 he set three course records at Market Rasen,
Lingfield and Folkestone. He then ran at Nad Al Sheba between
1994 and 1996 where he won four times. During his race career
he beat some of the best horses in Europe and the United
Arab Emirates including Passem Lotois, Dent Du Loup, Darike,
Akbar, Chndaka and Makzan. His placed efforts include 2nd
Al Ain Derby, Kempton and 3rd Dubai Stakes, Kempton Park.
Sire of the phenomenally successful Ecliptic (X Elfin Sky)
who won scores of races in the UK and UAE as well as Breeder’s
Cup 1st and 2nd Simooma and Saalsk. In 2003 he also had
a winner with Abusamra. Vadeer is one of my all time favourite
stallions at stud for his strong dam line, good looks and
true grit on the track that saw him conquer some of the
best racing Arabians to-date. I plan to cover Jumah with
him next season! Stud Fee £1,000 NFNF (No VAT).

Vasilisk
(1991, bay stallion, 15.2hh)

An
extremely flamboyant son of of Strij out of the Classic
producing Vospitannica (Temir). He won four races at 3 years
in his native Russia including two of the Classics, The
Budenny Memorial and The Comparison Stakes. In the UK he
ran a couple of times winning the Emirates Godolphin Stakes
at Brighton in awesome fashion before continuing his career
in UAE. Only at stud for a couple of years, he has the pedigree,
looks and versatility to excel as a sire he won over distances
ranging from 2,000m to 3,000m. I bred a mare to him in 2002
and Autumn Columbine produced a lovely colt last June, strong,
well made with good action and the most charming temperament.
I intend to use Vasilisk again next year. Stud Fee £500
(inc VAT). Contact Veronique Briat 01842 766178 (Shadwell

Pogojii
(chestnut, 1988, 15.2hh)
A
beautiful stallion with size, substance and the most beautiful
eyes and temperament. He is by the Probat son Gwizd out of
the influential broodmare Pesnianka (by Nabeg x Pesnia (Aswan)).
He won four stakes races in Russia including the 1st Name
of RSFSR as well as being second in the Naseem Prize as a
3 year old in 1991. In the UK he won three races and set course
records over 2 Miles at Uttoxeter and 2 Miles 4 Furlongs Kempton
Park. He is half brother to Classic placed and UK winners
Diskant and Palubnik (the latter who is more known for siring
show winners). His grand dam, Pesnia, by Aswan was the dam
of Oak winner Pesennaia. Pogojii’s only runner to-date
Meshalla was a fast finishing third on her racecourse debut
after missing the break. I have bred two mares to Pogojii
and they have both produced outstanding, well made fillies,
with good limbs and fantastic action. Kumara Zayin (x Autumn
Columbine) will make her racecourse debut next year, she was
3rd Dunster Show 2003 on her only outing to-date. Laihana
Zayin (x Shahlizia) was 4th at the same show and is also being
retained for racing. Stud Fee £250 1st Oct NFNF.

|
Another
extremely beautiful Russian stallion who combined beauty with
speed and guts. By the Menes son Balaton, out of Stihia, he
was bred by the Tersk Stud Russia and is half brother to Susan
George’s show stallion Artist (by Aswan). Sambist raced
for five years and retired to stud in October 1994 100% sound.
He raced a total of 42 times winning 18 times, being placed
second 7 times and third eight times. He was the UK’s
Champion stayer for two years in a row and won the Long Distance
Championship (2 Miles 4 Furlongs) at Goodwood by 8 lengths.
His w o n d e r f u l movement and presence saw him win the
UK International Liberty Class in 1996 (his only show appearance
to-date), and his daughter Daleelah (x Pesennaia) was Female
Junior Champion in UK. His stock have performed consistently
well on the track and include the decent handicap winners

Samman (x Mantua). He is also the sire of Horizon (x Galaxy
Sky) who won the Deira Ltd. Handicap (1 Mile 5 Furlongs) by

performer Juma (x Jerba Du Paon) who stamped himself as one
of the best stayers around when winning the UAE Equestrian
and Racing Federation Group 2 at Chester. I aim to cover my
favourite Spanish mare Aliesha (Fuego x Talima) with Sambist
this year. Stud Fee £500 (+VAT). Contact Mrs G Hay

THE
FRENCH
Since the early 1990s, the French Arabians have ruled Arab
racing, winning nearly every Group race going in the UK, the
strength of the bloodlines from such stallions as Manganate,
Dormane, Tidjani, Djelfor, Djouras Tu and Passem Lotois is
evident. Criticised for their lack of type, box heads and
flat tails there can be no dispute about their speed and performance
ability, for those wanting to breed racing Arabians they are
the main choice. Clarendon Stud have successfully crossed
their Spanish and Russian mares with French stallions with
impressive results from the likes CS Camellia, CS Al Wahed
and CS Comete (all by Bengali D’Albret). Whilst Christine
Cone has enjoyed a lot of success with her homebred’s
Fayre Abi (by Abitibi) and Olivphaya (by Vert Olive). |

the Wathnan Cup and the Heir Apparent Sword in UAE, the Prix
Du President UAE at Chantilly, France in 1997 and1998 and

son in the States, Djenius (x Silky Way) has won 5 of his
7 starts including January 2004 the Group 1 “Drinkers
of the Wind Derby”. His first UK crop is due to make
its debut this year including CS Cabbaro (x Ciarosa) and CS

Concord
(1995, chestnut stallion, 15.1hh)
New
kid on the block, having his first season at stud in the UK
this year. He won his only start impressively in Qatar before
injury curtailed his career. By the best Group producing stallion
Dormane out of Naiada Al Maury. He is full brother to Noreen
(Hatta Stakes Group 1 heroine), Nisaee, AND ANOTHER TWO Below
are two more stallions who I believe will both become Arabian
racing stallions to note in the future. Amer (1984, grey stallion,
15hh), a nice looking individual who is from the Desert, his
sire is Wafi and he’s out of the desert bred mare Bushrah.
He won four races in Qatar in 1990 and then came over to England
and won all the best races including the UAE International
Mile, the UAE International Sprint Stakes, the Dubai Stakes,
the Al Nahyan International, the UAE International Handicap
and the Qatar Sprint Championships. Hailed by some as the
“Northern Dancer” of Arabian racing, if you can
afford his stud fee then you would send your mare (well, I
definitely would). His stock have won in UK, Turkey and the
UAE. His daughter, Al Anood, has won seventeen times including
the Malagitz Trophy in Turkey, the Hatta Stakes (Group 1 UK),
the Zaabeel Stakes (Group 1 UK) and the ADNOC National Day
