I got bitten three times today by the horrid things, dose anybody have any ideas what I can spray on myself to stop them butting me. The horses have fly rugs on and are spending most of their days in the shed but sadly the spray I put on them brings me out in a rash, any suggestions very welcome

Hi, Avon skin so soft the original one usually works quite well at repelling most of those pesky little critters. And haemorrhoid cream works really well for helping heal the bitten area. There is another product but I cannot remember the name at this moment in time... I will have a look and post it up as soon as I remember or find the bottle

Hi, the valley view animal feeds in cornwall, their fly repellent is very good, natural and very effect as a skin conditioner also!
Judith S.. Over the years I have rescued a lot of animals with various aliments and conditions and also worked with and listened hard to anything any of the 'old timer' 'old ways' type horse/country types where willing to share, although some of the products harder to get now-a-days. Also have a very open minded vet who is willing to try alternative remedies on things, so we had a mare we rescued with severe rain scald along her back, it was very gruesome so we made a remedy up for this which was a potion of creams which worked wonders, it was a mix my father-grandfather-great grandfather had used for generations on wounds/raw skin etc, obviously got slightly tweaked as products discontinued but something else was same etc. and although it works great for the raw wounds etc we found that it didn't have same effect on the swelling created by bug bites, as coming into the spring the same mare also seemed to take reactions to the bug bites but with skin issues in process of healing we couldn't dose her in sprays etc so needed something to eliminate the bite swellings in a hurry, so in a crazy bathroom cabinet hoke I discovered a tube of haemorrhoid cream! I had a eureka type moment as I read the packaging, elevates swelling, discomfort, tenderness, soothes, protects etc I thought... well .. these are the issues I need something to help with for my poor girl, and if its gentle/kind enough to use in a delicate area then it wouldn't do any harm or sting etc so of I trotted, tried it and it worked great! My vet is still recommending it to ones to use, also works great if us humans get bitten to! Another horse I used it on had a horrendous protruding scar, this was out nearly twice her leg width in front of her leg, the haemorrhoid cream alongside a couple other things helped to remove the protruding scar in layers with each layer staying healthy and protected underneath, it was a long process but it ended up no more than 1/2inch in front of her leg and it all shed back without any bleeding, rawness, discomfort etc so was win win all round. It is a handy cream to have in the cupboard, just be careful with direct sun hitting it when its on the skin as some can make you more prone to sun damage due to the ingredients but a lot of products and creams are like that anyway. Hope that was some help, |
