This is the 4th summer since our stables were built and the builders put up special ledges for swallows to nest. Still no swallows. We put up a wooden birdbox too. Nothing except for the odd wasp who turns up to have a chew. Feeling very unappreciated by the local avian community
When I walk the dogs on my neighbours finca in the early evening, there are often gangs of swifts hunting on the wing. If I stand still, they fly so close that I can feel the whoosh of air on my face as they dart by just inches away. Magical. Occasionally there are a few swallows hunting with them but I haven't seen any this year. |

Swallows are now building another nest this time on the strip lighting, the old nest seems fine would this be the parents or the youngsters all very confusing. |

Well what a disaster! Got to yard this morning and the nest above my boys door has been emptied, 4 dead chicks on the floor, all fully developed and well fed. So sad. |

I don't know if I want them to have another brood Sab2, I was so upset, it spoilt my morning ride as they were on my mind. What if they do the same again? I don't know what happened so cruel and sad. |

Firelight, I posted this 30 June last year....
"Got to yard this aft and found 4 baby swallows dead on floor within 6 inch of each other. No evidence of cat damage and they were very high up on barn roof. Could parents have chucked em out of nest as they looked very close to fledging. Mother Nature can be cruel but is their a reason?"
Very strange, must be a reason and I think parents maybe to blame. Very sad

Yes very sad Ari and as you say there must be a reason, but what? We don't have any cats and they seemed to be safe. |

Do you have any Squirrels , i chased the Squirrel off the bird feeders the other day , it jumped from the tree halfway up the house wall then ran up under the roof and along jumping on the nests as it went. Luckily the parent birds went mad and chased it away but could of knocked the babies out of the nest. I haven,t dared chase it away again but luckily it sees me now and runs. |
