My pal has a Flyde saddle for showing her Highland and very good quality. Not her saddle of choice for hacking as that's a Bates but then again the Flyde isn't a GP saddle it's for showing.

Thanks Ari , i think the ones he makes under the Symonds name are more comfortable and more for general hacking etc. I have ridden my pals stallion a couple of times in his Flyde saddle, the first time i rode in it i hated it and found it very hard but i had been riding in my comfy saddle then today i went up and rode in it again and it was far more comfortable but i haven,t ridden in mine since the last time i sat on the Flyde ( that or i had thicker trousers on ) plus hes only a sec a so a tiny tot and takes a bit of getting used to after 16.1hh

I dont know about symonds ones but I know people who have fyldes. They wouldnt have anything else but I really dont like them. They are meant for showing and not every use yet but thats what alot of people do. Almost every pony I know starts to get sore and show it obviously or their performance starts to deteriorate slowly. Ive had arguments about it being the saddle but I get 'they are used by majority of show folk'. There was a recent thread on another forum about choice of them or black country....black country was the favourite for reasons I said.
If the symonds are more for every day use without the very flat hard foam panels, I would considerate it. What about Native Pony Saddles?

I think the Symonds have wool flock panels in ( sure thats what he said ) they don,t seem to come up second hand very often as people seem to keep them . I had heard bad reports about the Native pony ones but its like everything isn,t it there will always be some that love them and some don,t in whatever you look at. Bit of a minefield buying saddles isn,t it, i just would like to update mine and get a leather gp if possible, i had looked at Thorowgood synthetic ones but i have never sat on one , my present wintec 2000 is getting old now so hence the need to update and my other leather gp ones are not wide enough.

what about an ideal H&C type? I loved mine and then storm changed shape so sadly it had to go. In fact, I just love Ideals...so many styles, can be adapted to suit your horse and most def the most comfortable saddles out there imo. They hold their value great too if you need to sell on (not so good if buying, lol).

Saddles are a nightmare, we all have our preferences as do our horses. I have a Lovett & Ricketts VSD event, beautifully made in lovely soft leather with generous knee and thigh roles that keeps even me where I should be and very comfortable. Not a saddle you would think to suit an Arab and we only tried it on spec cos my pal was looking to sell it, but it's great for us. Just have a look and try at lots, there are some fabulous new makes but don't discount the tried and tested or a really good second hand correctly fit like mine can be a bargain.

I have a Symonds Saddle. Bought it for my newly backed 4 year old and he has been ridden it in 5 years. He is now 9 years old. I have it check every 8 months.

It fits him great ( was the only saddle in the shop that fitted him) and he is happy in it. It's fairly straight cut like a VSD and suits my short legs
