Hi - wondering what you all use. Jahaal has started getting his tongue over his bit. He has only just been re backed and is going nicely in his eggbut snaffle at home, but on his hacks he gets it over. My others are in a Dutch gag to a loose ring snaffle. He doesn't evade the bit and even when the tongue is over, he doesn't take advantage, but could do without him doing it :) there is an absolute minefield with bits!! It's as difficult as finding a decent saddle!! Ha!!

Mine is ridden in a sweet iron french link eggbutt. He doesnt like the movement of a loose ring. I find he gets very mouthy and starts trying to put his tongue over the bit when hes saying his saddle needs adjusted. Although I did also needed to use a loose (ish) flash to stop him getting into the habit. I just used it for a few weeks and then stopped. It broke the habit and the adrenaline rush he'd get from getting his tongue over.
If he goes nice at home with it...maybe try a flash (not super tight). Hes maybe getting off on the adrenaline. Or is your contact stronger out on hacks? He could be trying to resist the stronger contact.

Hi, I'm a huge fan of Herm Sprenger bits.

I started my gelding in a Hs Duo, which is a really soft nylon bit which, even after a lot of chewing, doesn't go hard and *****ly like a happy mouth does.

After a couple of years in the Duo, I progressed on to a HS Dynamic, which is a lovely bit (check out their website for info as it's too much for me to explain here), keeps the mouth really wet and my boy took to it like a dream.

These bits are expensive though, but some tack shops do trials!

You could try one of the Myler ported bits to help sort this out. Beware though, Myler bits are 1/4" bigger than advertised, so you will need to get the next size down. I personally reckon trying different bits is a much better answer than strapping the mouth shut, especially on Arabs, many of whom simply don't have room for their tongue and a thick bit at the same time. The ported Mylers give the tongue more room and also make it more difficult for the horse to get their tongue over the bit. Plus they don't have a nutcracker action.

My mare hates jointed bits, and goes extremely well in a kimblewick or a mullen mouthed Pelham, this surprised me, after spending a fortune on mylar and KK sprenger bits with lozenges which she really wasn't happy with. But they are all different, our veteran Arab mare likes a French link, our older gelding and my sister's former loan Arab and my Anglo all went best in a Waterford snaffle, my sister's current gelding is about to try a Boucher.....find a bit bank or talk to your friends and see what they have tucked away and trial bits until you find what works best - otherwise you can spend a fortune...

Spider goes best in a loose ring French link but Marvin plays with it all the time which is really annoying but he doesn't fuss with a loose ring snaffle. Neither of them are difficult about the bit though they will both sometimes get their tongues over it. I don't worry about this, they soon put it back again. I don't actually consider that you can physically stop a horse whatever bit you use - its only a signal after all.

Has he had his wolf teeth rmoved? I only ask as I had an awful time with Arabi and bits and after having a different dentist out he told me he still had them, yet I had paid to have them removed some time previous so heaven knows what teeth he did take out, just a thought as it can happen.

I am no expert on bits so have no valuable advice but Linda's mention of a Waterford is worth trying. My fabulous lady Arab could take hold like a train and would mouth the bit and I rode her for years in a Waterford with egbutt sides as she resented anything solid but went kindly in the Waterford.

I'm going to stop giving advice on bits and start listening to everyone elses. Spider almost unstoppable in his French link this week, Marvin not at all happy in the snaffle! So much for it only being signal after all
