Percy Pointless is at vets on drip at min, he started acting quietly on wed night so i took him to vets yesterday , the vet checked him over then sent him home, during the night he has been sick and feels cold and very subdued so took him back to vets this morning. X rays show no blockage which is what i thought it may be as hes always eating the furniture along with anything else he can grab. They ahve done 3 tests on his liver and 2 are saying there is a problem one says fine. They are sending stuff to labs but of course its friday so no results till mon, his mouth is cool and his eyes look a tiny bit red and he is so quiet. Any thoughts anybody , they are keeping him on a drip and we now have to wait for lab results. just wondered if anybody had any ideas what could be wrong with my big daft boy

Sorry I haven't a clue but on his past form I would hazard a guess it is something he has eaten. He is in the right place to get the best of care. Hope he is home and better soon |

Some kind of poison? I don't know but because he eats things he might have ingested a toxic substance. Hugs and healing thoughts are on their way. I feel like I know Percy after your posts about him. |

I have just been and got him home, it was his kidneys that are the problem not his liver, silly me his legs are swollen but apparently they were huge last night and they had to wrap him in hot water bottles to try and keep him warm. Hes pulled his drip out twice bless him ( naughty Percy ) but he has started eating so fingers crossed we don,t have to rush him back till tue for the results from lab, bit of a mystery but nothing any of my gang do dose not surprise me. Quarabian yes maybe he has eaten something out on his walk, sadly the gamekeepers are a bit naughty sometimes, hes always on his extending lead but it only takes one mouthful dosen,t it. His eyes and the skin around his face are not quite as bloodshot today as yesterday so that must be a good sign, heres hoping the big daft dog is soon back to his normal stupid self. Hes curled up under his duvet at min resting , they have suggested massaging his legs tonight to try and get the swelling down. |

I'm so sorry to hear poor Percy is under the weather still .. About 2 years ago my black Labrador was bitten by an adder on her walk..she was very quickly very unwell and i rushed to the vets, cutting the walk short, her eyes were bloodshot and her breathing labored, it was her kidneys that were in danger of shutting down and she had a massive fluid reaction in her neck and front legs. She was bitten 3 times, my vet thought she had probably disturbed a mating pair. Lots of the things poor Percy is suffering do sound like a reaction to something toxic. I had to massage jet for at least 2 weeks after to help move the fluid. Best wishes for your boy xxx |

SuziQ an adder bite was one of my thoughts as we are on a grouse moor and they are about, i mentioned it to the vets but they thought not but his symptoms are very close to your dogs, his mouth inside and out is very red and eyes still bloodshot, swollen front legs as well and poorly kidneys. I saw a few marks on his front legs when i took him and mentioned this to vets but he said it just looked like he had been licking his leg too much.I am going to mention it again, i am already on my second vet from the practice as i don,t like the first vet i saw on the first day . How long did it take for Jet to recover ? Just to add he has eaten a bit of crust from my quiche and a bit of sausage, i know thats not the most healthy of options but the way i see it is any food is better than no food. |

So glad Percy is showing an interest in food, that has to be a good sign. I wouldn't care at all what he ate within reason as long as he was eating. This illness aside he is a strong dog with a very determined character so that all goes in his favour. I agree it sounds like something toxic be it a bite or something he has eaten. We place our trust in vets but you are right to be well informed and to question.

Thanks Ari, the first vet sent me home and said there was nothing wrong, he made me feel like i was fussing over nothing, its the same vet that sent me home with his mum earlier in the year when she too ended up on a drip for two days after i asked to see a different vet the following day ( different problem ) I have told them i do not want to deal with him again unless there is no other vet around as i have no confidence in him at all, he needs to listen to his owners as after all we know our dogs far better than he dose. Well hes eaten a tiny piece of chicken and had a walk on the lawn, back under his duvet now sleeping, so pleased hes eating something |

Yes, vets really need to listen to experienced owners. I wouldn't be happy with a vet that didn't.

Waiting for vets to ring as hes been sick during the night , ate a few pieces of chicken at 7am and is drinking water but will not eat anything now, dropping lots of weight, hes normally a big lad , he dose not want to get up just laid under his blanket . Never seen a tick on him but we cannot rule anything out. |

Oh sab you need to kick your vet harder, he doesnt sound at all well. Jet was in the vets on anti-inflammatorys and a drip for 5 days to support her Kidneys and liver and then I brought her home to my mums as it is much quieter their and she was so weak and wobbly. She was bitten on the nose and it took 4 days for the swelling to go down enough for her to be able to eat or drink anything. She stayed with Mum for a week and was nearly back to normal by the time she came home but she had very prompt and correct treatment, they had a new Australian vet on and when I described what had happened she instantly said shes been bitten and started looking for the bites. Sending you lots of goodwishes |

I have taken him back to the vets and they are going to x ray again but i have also asked them to check for any signs of bites from adders or ticks. I took him out on the lawn before i set off, he had a wee then seemed to be walking round and squatting again as if he wanted to wee again, he normally squats for a wee rather than lifting his leg . They will put him back on a drip to get some fluids back in so lets hope he dosen,t pull it out again. |

Poor little man, maybe the x ray will show he has eaten something that is causing an obstruction or they will discover what is making him so ill.

Thinking positive thoughts until we get good news. Keep at them vets, you are paying for their professional skills, your boy is a young and prior to this very healthy dog with seemingly no obvious diagnosis. I would be thinking maybe a referral to an expert vet hospital like we do with horses. |
