So after 3 years of showing my arab gelding, orashaal, at local shows I'm throwing us both in at the deep end and taking him to chesire county show, which is a HOYS qualifier.
It will be his first show where there will be a ride judge and it's both of ours first bigger show under saddle.
He's usually a good lad but any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Have faith! You'll be fine and keep us posted.
Do you intend to come up through the ranks - Pre Novice, Novice and then Open & HOYs Qualifier?
This may help you with your confidence, rather than going straight in at the deep end.
Good luck |

Thank you, we've both done novice and a couple of open shows but this will be our first bigger show, it was only after I started doing my entries for the show that I realised it was a HOYS qualifier.
Once I'm at the show I will be fine it's just these next two months we're my nerves will get me. I know we will both be up against a lot of competition and I'm not bothered how we do just as long as he does his best.
I do want to go further with him and I would have liked to have done a few actual arab shows first but we struggle with transport and can only really go to shows by jumping in with other people.

hi hellz, firstly good luck! I wanted to do this show buts I decided its just such a long way anyway that aside have you had many other people ride your boy other than you? it would be good to do so to get positive and any negative feedback that would be good and of course he wont react with a stranger on him. also, county shows are busy! so bear that in mind there is a lot to see if you can walk him around and relax him before the class for you and him and then warm up that helps settle both your nerves! is there a class before you? if so watch that mainly to how people are riding the ring is it wet , slippery, noisy, any distractions? also, don't get stuck on the outside lane as I call it! often ringside is full of umbrellas noise, children screaming , and people jumping aroind yes really!.. so give yourself room keep relaxed and rhythmic utilise the ring don't rush and make sure the judge gets to see your paces on the change of rain ( the 1st one) I always do a extended trot and then ask for canter its nice to see - ak finally, ask a friend to ride him at home and run through a show for you - pretend you are the judge and think how does he look? would I want to ride him - hope this helps! look forward to hearing all about it ! xx |

Always worth getting a few people to ride as we do all ride differently that way he won't be phased by the judge, people of different weights . Try getting some banners and flags balloons and so on. As like others have said lots to see at county show like buggies and horse and carts. Most of all just enjoy yourself. Let us know how you do |

Thanks everyone I really appreciate your advice. He's usually quite chilled it's usually me that's the stressy one. He's had a few people on him and he seems alright with it, but I am going to start getting more people on him so he gets used it more. As sometimes he can be abit of an idiot with new people. But practice makes perfect :)
He has been at a show before where there was lots of banners and loud music an a lot going on and he took it all in his stride, so hopefully he will do the same at chesire.
I went to north staffs spring arab show yesterday to watch the ridden arab geldings to see what I'm going to be up against and I feel tonnes better now. As long as he behaves I will be happy with him. Hoping to take him up to osbaldeston for the north western in a few weeks providing I can get transport so I will see how he goes with a ride judge there :) |

Well took my emmett to Chesire and could not be happier with him! All that stressing for nothing. He knew his job and went in the ring and did me proud. With lovely comments from the judge :) We got 11th in a big quality class and I'm just happy he took it all in his stride :) he was definitely warn out after all that work though! I'm proud to call him mine and know that all our hard work will pay off, lots more shows for us now :)
