Hello all! I would like your esteemed advice please!

Having recently purchased the lovely Benareko (by Aja Ben Naziff) I intend to show him under saddle. My plan is to school him up over the winter then head out in the spring.

It's been a long time since I've been to an arab show so wanted to get some advice on his confirmation and also what is expected. My understanding is that they are judged the same as a riding horse?

I have attached some pics (the ridden picture is the lady I bought him from) he can sometimes look a little bum high but I think at 7 he still has time to level off a bit? (I have read some posts of people saying their arabs grew until they were 8/9??).

He is a little on the podgey side at the mo and am hoping he will slim down a little as he fittens up.

Any advice on his confirmation, condition etc would be gratefully received!

Rachel

What a lovely looking chap. No advice on showing i'm afraid as I only do riding club and then not very often too much effort with a grey! But i'm sure lots of other people will be able to fill you in on the arab shows.

had similar questions pop over the years and this was a reply from a poster T42 ..She wrote:

I had my first go at ridden showing this year. I entered for novice ridden & thoroughly enjoyed it.
It goes like this, in Arab Horse Society shows. You all go round the ring together in walk, trot & canter, then change the rein & canter round the other way, then come back to walk.
The steward tells you what to do & when to change the pace, change the rein, come into the line-up, etc. They call you into line & you dismount & wait for the judge to come & ride your horse. The judge rides the horse in walk, trot & canter on both reins & then brings it back to you. Next you take off the saddle (& give the horse a quick polish!). When they call you out you stand the horse for the judge, who looks at it from both sides, back & front. You walk the horse in-hand away from the judge to the steward, then trot back towards the judge & on past them to re-take your place in the line. Saddle goes back on, you re-mount & then all go back round the ring in walk for the judge to decide the final placings.
You get called into line, rosettes awarded, maybe a comment from the judge & then the victory gallop.
In pre-novice classes the judge doesn't ride the horse, you do an individual show instead.(good option for first time out )

Your horse needs to be able to go round the ring in canter with several other horses and not get too silly. It needs to be able to stand quietly next to a mounting block for the judge to mount & it needs to be used to strange people riding it.
Arab Horse Society shows are usually well run & the ridden classes nice & calm & quiet. I would recommend them for a first go at ridden classes. Local shows can sometimes be a bit chaotic for an inexperienced horse.

My opinion..
Your horse needs to be fit and capable of doing all the above which is the most important thing and not go round the ring struggling and puffing! Often you may go to a show and do 2 -3 classes so its important that they can cope physically and mentally x

Concentrate on this first and schooling maybe you could join a regional AHS group? they usually run clinics and offer support for first timers in the ring and you could get assessed properly by a panel judge and get feedback good luck! x

He looks lovely! I don't think he's particularly podgey, just looks a bit 'soft' at the moment - gorgeous though

Arab classes are judged on a similar vein to any other ridden class. Manners are very important and they must give a good, obediant and comfortable ride so try to get lots of people on him so he's used to being ridden by others. Conformation and turnout also play a part and the overall picture will help you catch the judge's eye.

Good luck!
