Did anyone go? It used to be such a major highlight of my year when I was showing Garnet and now it doesn't even warrant a mention on the dedicated Cherif thread?

Hi garnet,
Just popped my head in here specifically to see if any postings on the show.
Not surprised to see it passed unnoticed though.
Sadly the out there doing it Arab people who breed, show and compete generally all seem to have deserted the forum.
It's such a shame, this place used to be buzzing with news from the world championships to the local show. Huge breeders from around the world to the single mare owner breeding their own next horse.
It was a fascinating, informative and exciting forum to log in to.

I know face book does it all these days, but I used to love having a dedicated forum that I knew would bring all aspects of the Arabian horse together.

Unfortunately that has gone for ever I fear. Leaving a chit chat forum about which rug or bit to use.
Nothing wrong with those posts, until that's all there is.
No more, the big debates about big subjects with input from some of the most knowledgable, experienced horse people from around the world.

My visits to the forum used to be several times a day. I barely log in 3 or 4 times a year anymore.

So sad.

Hi Sue

the Cherif has its own dedicated wesite now, with all the info, pics etc., Think you just have to type in The Cherif and will get directed to the website

I went this year and had a wonderful day. I didn't post as I thought from the posts lately that no-one was interested in this sort of thing anymore.

This show always gives me a boost at this time of year and 2013 was no exception. The standard of the horses gets better and better and the numbers held up amazingly well with classes of 27 and 28 making it well worth the journey.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the new HOYS ruling comes into being next year. I just hope it doesn't affect this very worthwhile Anglo/Part-bred show and the 'shop window' for these lovely horses.

Well done to the organisers and thankyou!

Jean

Thank you Gem, Babs and Jean. I'm glad the show is alive and well but sad that it is no longer of much interest on this forum - it was such a huge part of my life, from the moment schedules arrived to actually being there. I qualified Sam for a driving championship at Addington last Saturday (the same one we did at Towerlands with Red in 2008) and would dearly love to have competed there again but not really well enough at the moment.
I'll have a look on the Cherif website now - thanks Babs. xx

I went to the Cherif for the in hand classes. I love this show! the quality is amazing, the organisation brilliant and everyone is so friendly. I met lots of friends, both old and new. I love the fact that everyone there is passionate about anglos/part breds.
Personally I dont often post on AL as I'm not sure there's a lot of interest in 'part bred' news as opposed to 'pure bred' - apologies if I'm wrong on that, just my opinion!

Pam your Stallion just oozes quality, thanks for sharing with us I bet you are very proud of him.
I agree that we have lost so many posters from this forum, which is such a shame it has become a bit boring compared to a number of years ago.

Beautiful horse, Pam - well done! I agree that it is a brilliant show and was very surprised that no-one on the forum had mentioned it.

Hi Garnet, I am afraid that Gem has hit the nail on the head...don't get me wrong I like Facebook for many reasons..but I think it has destroyed the unique community that we once had on AL.. there are still useful topics not slating it here.. but who remembers the days we all clubbed together to raise money to save the ridden pure-bred classes at RIHS for example? It is very sad to see ..
Anyway so glad Cherif is doing so well - I sponsor a perpetual trophy there myself so although I am active in the pure-bred ridden world I will never loose interest in the AA/PBA as my PBA was v dear to me and the Cherif was my first 'proper' championship I ever went to!
As opposed to riding club shows etc..so it will always remain very special to me x

Pam your stallion is really lovely well done

I also agree that facebook has destroyed many a good thing, not half the amount of people post on here anymore its such a shame, I used to love reading about show results and looking at the pictures but no one seems to put them on anymore.

Why is showing so important that an entire forum should be condemned because of a failure to value it as much as you might?

I am not trying to belittle your interest in showing, but people on this forum have arabians or part breds for all sorts of reasons besides showing -- are these reasons less important than showing? A number of threads are about arabian welfare of one sort of other -- and a great number of horses have found homes or been given new leases of life because of this forum. Some people (like me) got into the breed because of this forum, have made friends in person with other members, and value those friendships highly. Others have been persuaded to try new things with their arabs because of what they have seen here. So why belittle the people on this forum -- their interests and passions. Why dismiss it outright in such a fashion?

By all means, if you want to start a thread on showing, start a thread. If you want to bump it up, bump it up. If you don't like the responses, either rethink your presentation or take your topic elsewhere. But to try to belittle people who for whatever reasons have failed to respond to your thread in a timely enough fashion that makes you feel satisfied seems unnecessary.

If I were trying to get more talk about showing, I'd come to the forum with some information as well as questions. I'd stock it with photos or video links or information. If you did that, I am certain you will get a ton of response and interest. I have seen others do the same about endurance, dressage, children's mounts, training, breeding, you name it.

This is an excellent forum full of active participants and I am glad to see threads on all sorts of topics here, including showing for that matter.

I am not condemning the forum; I always come on it at least once a day. I was simply surprised that no-one had mentioned the Cherif on here, especially as there is a dedicated section in the Showing forum.

Not sure how I can rethink my presentation or how my second post can possibly be interpreted as belittling anyone. Once again I take criticism for what I thought was quite an innocent remark, but to be fair the others were not on here.

Sazzlepants, it was my first big party too - happy memories! x

Seems to me that there have been a few comments about the lack of comments regarding showing. The only showing threads I've noticed in recent times are those remarking on how shows are so poorly supported that they will not continue. So if showing people are not supporting the shows, then I guess it follows that they won't be commenting on the forum.

There was, as I recall, on here and other places, some almost ridicule about the showing style of Arab Horses (Crabbet aside), and I recall on the last big showing debate thread some applause that changes had been make. Maybe the changes were too late, or recent economic times have forced showers to stop showing, or maybe many showers are breeders, who are also reported as not posting much anymore, but then breeding has its own 'anti's', it's not a popular activity these days.

But, it's also true that there have been some less than nice remarks about thread which deal with bits/saddles/girth etc. I've seen those comments and winced a bit. If the showing people don't show or comment on the forum any more. then its hardly the fault of the rider posters, who are interested in those topics.

For my part, I find Facebook discussions quite sticky. It reminds me of visiting one of those households where the family all talk at the same time and have no interest in what the others say, until they hit on a topic of 'slagging off', at which time they are in unison. Seems to me mostly like all talking and no listening.

I've looked at the seemingly popular Arab Horse FaceBook discussion group on Facebook, I see no Showing comments, lots of horses for sale, directly or subtly.

Anyway, spose if showing people want to talk about showing then they should start threads about it, no point waiting for people interested in bits to do it for them If no showing people reply to those threads then no showing people are interested in discussing showing.

Or did I have a logic bypass

Hi Martha some of the points you have raised did used to happen..and no AL is definitely not all about showing ! we wouldn't be doing our lovely horses any favours if we didn't promote/talk about all their other abilities!
However I think there is definite trend now to talk about results etc offline here..and it used to be the first place I would look for all the information! still that's not to say it cant be re-ignited.
plenty of people on here have a vested interest - personally I would love to see more photos/show promotion/ showing clinic/ results etc
It may help in getting people to attend more shows too..?
Anyone want to start a discussion about the HOYS changes WOW !

Did anyone see the judges comments in H&H about the Cherif? Pretty scathing i thought - not about the horses but about the standard of riding!

Re the forum, it seems to me that it is a different type of person who mainly posts on AL now. I shall say nothing more

Sazzle, I would be more than happy to have threads about showing -- why not? I never intend to breed a single horse in my life but I read all about lineage and breeding whenever there is a thread posted. :)

Kath, "a different type of person"?

Maybe one, like me, who takes on a horse that has been nothing but a broodmare for 12 years, is unable to be ridden because of behavioural problems and has sarcoids That type of person?

The "type of person" who not only treats the sarcoids, gives the mare an amazing home in a private yard at her own private house, re-starts the mare until she is not only rideable but safely working in the school and down roads. Is that the "different type of person" who has now come to AL?

Folks, we are not conducting a world summit here on AL. We're talking about our experience with arabian horses -- all of these experiences are equally important in my view, and equally unimportant to the eyes of the world...

Frankly I'd be delighted to see more threads about showing, I find them interesting and I love seeing the photos of the beautiful horses, and that certainly includes Anglos and part breds - I loved my Anglo and my two partbreds.

I personally have no real interest in going showing myself, I don't think Lily is show horse quality, although when I see the size of the classes in our local area I think perhaps I should take her just to make up the numbers...but please post you chaps that go, this forum really should reflect the diversity of the Arab horse world, and that is far far more than bits and saddles etc. etc., on the other hand I've gained from those posts too.

PS This thread has been read 435 times, so people are obviously interested enough to read it, even if they don't post, for whatever reasons

Good post Martha.
I for one am interested in all aspects of our lovely breed, breeding, showing whatever.
Yes I guess some people would find topics about bitting (my post!!!) boring... but I guess if you do you would just not bother to read them? I have never had a horse like Ali who was tricky to bit... its a minefield out there, everyones product is the best, so I am thankful for the advice I was given, and even more so that it seems to be making a positive difference.
I dont like the way some of the horses are shown but I am still interested in the results and peoples experiences.... you cant please everyone all of the time but as said before people have a choice!
The one thing I do miss are topics like Tail female... an epic read, something I quite often dip into now and then, shame there is nothing like that now. Equally though I am happy to see photos of your gorgeous horses.....

Pam your stallion is fabulous thank you for sharing the picture.
Totally agree with what Martha, Callisto and debs have said. I haven't the finances to take part in showing or to even visit the big shows but I enjoy the pictures, results and accounts when they are posted here. My friend is at HOYS and is under instruction to get me a programme so I can look at results and research breeding.
A part bred on our yard did very well at Northern Arab C show and I posted on showing section here for the results but none forthcoming.
I am interested in all topics, be it welfare, bloodlines, feeding, tack, showing, in fact anything to do with Arabs. I have had some great advice and learned a lot and (I hope ) been able to give a little help back from my own experiences.
So let's get the showing posts back showing members, we enjoy it.

Well said Martha. I own an arab and a part bred but am not interested in showing as I am not bothered about other people's (ie judges) opinions of my horses and I was sold my mare as "not show quality" but that did not bother me. I do not breed either. However I love arabs and am interested in all aspects of riding and owning them, nothing against those who show but it is not the be all and end all in my opinion.

I like to see a wide spread variety of different topics on here. I don't think it's just more threads about showing needed. That might be what I enjoy competing at these days (I can't ride any more due to arthritis) but I've always enjoyed reading posts from others on their achievements/enjoyment of their Arabs. I haven't really been on here for a long time, I'm not really sure why, there just seems to be less on here!
