I know allot of you by now will be aware of the Prosecution of a lady in Gloucestershire by the RSPCA.
I just fear that allot of us are making terrible comments about this person without knowing all of the facts.
I know very few of the facts myself and I don't know the person involved personally but what I do know from my own experience that any one of us can find ourselves without a job, without money, without a husband/boyfriend to boost us financially.
Now I am not condoning cruelty in any form and the Court, who I am sure have all the facts, will do what they have to do to punish this person but I do feel sorry that things have got this bad for this person. They obviously had no decent friends to call on for help and advice.
I know there are some of you, who will completely disagree with me here and hate me for even feeling sadness for this person. Albeit, I do and I just had to say it.
Perhaps I'll change my mind when I've seen the facts.

This person caused suffering in the 1990's .... welfare organisations took mares and foals away from her, some being put down..
This is nothing new....

I do agree that we shouldn't all jump on someone who's having a hard time, but in this particular case it is not just a one off! I do feel sad, obviously she has some mental problem that makes her think she is doing no wrong. But it is up to the law and court to decide what should be done.

I echo that lets wait and see what the courts decide. Some people do things they really don't mean to. I don't and never will agree to cruelty animals mean more to me than humans ( I wonder why). I am a Christian person and I am praying for everyone concerned.

Through her actions she has not only mistreat horses and caused death, she has upset a lot of people including a grieving family.
There is simply no excuse for her cruelty.
If I found myself in a situation I had no money or no partner I would do exactly what I did many years ago. Called friends for help, sold, gifted horses, whilst this was happening I spent my days picking barrows of grass and walking horses on the roads to keep feet trimmed etc.
One of wonderful people to help me was my late friend Dawn Sloan, I still cant even begin to think how angry she is knowing someone has mistreat her beloved horses. The only thing that keeps me from exploding is knowing that Raji is in her care now, he is `forever in the arms of an angel`
Over the years my small Arabian Stud came back to life and I am there to help everyone, I have been through horrid times so I know how it feels. Many people are just too proud or scared to ask for help. Now we have facebook, we dont even have to call people, we can ask and. We dont have to ask for money either, just support advice and maybe a little help that we cant do alone, all the heavy work ex partners did, muck trailor, moving haylage.
Anyway I hope this woman never crosses my path!

I agree Justine that if we are in trouble we'd call, sell & gift horses.
Not everyone sees things as clearly as us.
I feel sorry for the grieving family of Dawn, she sounded like a wonderful person. Its some comfort to all of us that Raji is now in her care.

I think there is a big difference when people of good reputation fall on times when they are unable to care for their horses as would be expected. Problems can arise for many different reasons and sometimes people don't even realise what they are doing, when this happens, I think we have to show some restraint and offer the best support we can.

When people have a long term history of very poor care; and don't seem to be bothered by the damage and misery they cause animals, then that's quite a different matter.

If I listen to the people who I trust and whose opinion I respect, then I cannot help thinking this lady has spent very many years not giving a flying **** about the physical and mental well being of her horses; and it must be in the region of at least the last 20 years, that's quite different from those who love and care for their horses but fall on bad times.

If I'm wrong, I'm happy to apologise.

P.S. Justine "Anyway I hope this woman never crosses my path!" Ditto

Have to say sounds like 'profit' from dogs and horses than any care.

I think there is a huge difference between people who are unable to cope through illness, old age, possible mental illness or a sudden change of circumstances and don't know where to turn for help (my mother's generation tend not to be au fait with the internet and facebook, and come from an era when it would be shameful to admit you couldn't cope). It is quite another situation when you deliberately surround yourself with a large number of horses that you do not have the facilities for, allow someone else's horse in your care to get into a condition where it has to be put down, have been investigated by the RSPCA and reported to the AHS over a period of twenty years, and only appear to be interested in profit rather than basic animal welfare.

I have been attacked in the past for being 'soft' on people who quite obviously couldn't cope, because I think there are circumstances where prosecution and character assassination are more harmful than helpful. I have read nothing that leads me to believe that this is applicable in this case.

Edited to say

When my husband walked out I lost my dream home, my horses and my dog, I was lucky that I had family members who could rehome them, but I never actually had any of those animals back with me, so I do know what it is like to lose everything you love, and to have to make some very hard decisions. I was able to do that, not everyone can, for various reasons.

If this person has such a bad reputation why haven't I heard of it before now.

I've been involved with Arabian Horses for nearly 30 years and I live less than 1 hour away from this person.

I haven't lived in a bubble for that 30 years, I've been actively showing and socialising with people in the Arab Horse World. In fact its fair to say my life is the Arabian Horse.

This is why I believe if someone is known to be a bad egg we really ought to name and shame them to stop any un necessary suffering.

All this said until I know all of the facts in this case, I really would not want to Judge them. You guys might be privey to more information than I have and I do respect your comments.

This may sound sad but believe me it's not; I have never been able to rely on a husband or boyfriends to boost my income, had much experience of both (being 50+) and brought up a horse loving daughter as a single mum. Always been independent, if I lost my job that would be devastating and it can happen to anybody in today's economic climate but family and friends would help and if not I would go without myself and get help for animals. Having said that I have kept my horse and other animal responsibilities within my means to look after them properly.
There is no excuse in my eyes for neglect of any kind.

Agree , Ari, that there is no excuse for neglect or cruelty.

I struggle to understand this and other reported cases.
If we can study behaviour we can hopefully intervene, if aware of early signs and prevent more suffering.

Found this USA article which did enlighten me as the author explains that ignorance is often the main factor but also suggests that some people 'collect' animals as a hoarding type behaviour.

I don't excuse neglect and suspect that some are motivated by greed - e.g. puppy farms.

Perhaps a similar blog should be written on what to do for the best if concerned re a UK horse as the obvious one - call the RSPCA - has not apparently always had an effective outcome.

I agree that neglect, in any form, cannot be condoned but what worries me is why it has not been common knowledge if it has been going on for so long?

The facebook thread on this has recently brought this to the attention of a lot of people including some who witnessed this neglect in the 1990's and these people have been very upset that LF has caused more neglect since!
The thread is there for you to read.
The problem is partly due to the fact that she has moved her horses around from yard to yard, field to field....

"She is due to be committed on the 1st October."

I suppose pleading guilty is a good indicator that she was; but I guess not 100% proof, spose it's possible to plead guilty even if you are not? If she is, then, on behalf of all those who were neglected, I hope the punishment fits the crime.

It says on that FaceBook thread "and do not wish a Witch Hunt as others on Arabian lines have called it" I was quite interested to read the comments there, having the pleasure of owning one of her apparent previous victims, until I read that .... sigh .... walks away ....

I knew the Court would sentence LF according to her crime.

I 'just had to say' my feelings in this matter, which I feel I am entitled to.

I would appreciate if all of you who have your views allow me to have mine to.

You must understand, I am not privey to all of the facts in this case, I'm not personally involved and I would never Judge a person or any circumstance without having full knowledge of all the goings on.

However, I am always sorry to hear that a horse has lost his life due to the care, or lack of it given to him by Humans. Whether it be a kids pony or a fine Arabian stallion like Raji.

I'm sorry for Dawn, who loved him so much and I'm sorry for Dawn's family, who have lost both Dawn and now her prized possession.

I am also sorry for LF, who obviously has this on her conscience for the rest of her life. I hope she learns from this terrible situation. She will suffer this regret for the rest of her days I'm sure.

Nat I appreciate what you mean as in we can hear and read stuff on the internet but don't actually know the facts for ourselves. What gets to me in this case is Raji was on loan, if she was in difficulties all she had to do was ring Dawn's daughter who had been trying to find them and hand him back instead of hiding therefore I doubt she feels any remorse. There was no need for him to end up like this, very sad for all concerned.

Yes I agree Joanna_piana, LF should have asked for help long before matters got this bad and completely out of hand. She is certainly guilty of that.

We see many pictures on AL of horses, who have been out on loan, coming back to their owners in terrible condition. There really is no excuse for this.
