OMG I think someone has swapped my pony for some sort of Tazmanian devil .

My daughter rode her Monday and she was an absolute pleasure to be with, worked beautifully and jumped like a dream followed by a very relaxed canter on the beach....

24hrs later I swear it was not the same pony. We brought her in and she pranced, snorted, spun in circles and was generally HORRIBLE!! We decided it was just one of those things....

Until today! When she was even worse, then b*ggered off with my daughter twice in the school We left her this evening spinning and shouting in her stable like a mad thing and squirting every 2 mins!

So, is it true that the first season of the year can be the worst (if not LIE to me and tell me it is for my own sanity!!).

Any recommendations for something to take the edge off her (I've had to hit the wine... not sure it would help her though!)?

On the plus side I guess it means Spring is finally on the way
... though I'm now wondering whether I do really prefer the Winter!!

Oh dear!! The first is often the most dramatic and the behaviour under saddle not that surprising as she has enlarged ovaries at this stage of her cycle. I absolutely totally and utterly swear by Agnus Castus (buy.. for cheapest and unadulterated!)..Ruby gets it all the time and the other day I noticed Kas being a bit marish and squirty..2 doses later back to lovely girl.

Everyone in my life brings me happiness, some by arriving others by leaving.

First season of the year?!
The 5 mares on my livery yard are in season at the moment, including my two [Splash and Freya], but this isn't their first season of the year!
Freya was in season over winter, as was Splash and one other mare. The other two didn't but they are getting on in years now, and are less synced than the young'uns
Have to say though, Splash is always horrible, it's just the way she is, and no matter what supplements we try with her, nothing changes.
Freya is mareish all the time, but I suppose because of Splash, I'm used to it. I can't say she is any worse, although she is more inclined to rear when being turned out or brought in, and bucks under saddle in canter, but stickablity is a wonderful thing, and three days later she is back to her normal self. Probably terribly mareish to others, but sweet enough to me

Although, hearing about this Agnus Castus??? Never heard of that, and always willing to give something new a try with these girls, it's on my list to buy and try!

Interesting post! I never thought to ask about seasons lol

Hi Mirandatoo,
I'm also a great believer in Agnus castus. Sharea who normally is the sweetest most compliant mare imaginable can change overnight into someone unrecognisable when in season! Although for her it doesn't seem to completely eliminate the season it does tone things down considerably so she is manageable. She caught me out by coming into season in February this year but now I have a large tub of the stuff which she'll have until the winter.
Good luck I know it can be quite a shock when it first happens if you're not used to it. I'm beginning to recognise when Sharea is about to come into season as she's extra affectionate and really, really good just before!

My mare is a nightmare in season. Her first is enough to drive you insane! Takes her til about late june/july to become 'normal'. Ive tried almost everything with her. even considered the marble but shes now 25 so Im reluctant to go down that road. Shes a fence runner when in season. So we try to avoid having any boys we think is her type in fields next door. I get her weight on and within 2 days she back to being a hatrack .
Is she stabled next to boys? or turned out with any/next door?
