As a new AL member I thought I'd better practice before I post photos to make sure I can do it right. So I posted a photo in the photo gallery/photo/video help thread under Test - is this El Santo? I realize now from a picture on the web that it's not El Santo (he didn't have stockings in front), does anyone know who it is? Looking at the background I think this was at Syon Park, so early 1970's. Thanks for any help.

Oops - didn't see this post before I answered your post on the photo/ video help forum - I will have a look at some of my old books tonight - off for a hack now.

Thanks for the welcomes, and attempts to identify him. I did a double take when I compared with the pictures I have of Radfan, the markings are very similar but Radfan had a wider blaze over the nose and was a brighter lighter chestnut. The one above was close to the colour in the picture, liver. These are Radfan, sorry the first is a bit fuzzy.

Sorry Gardenia. The front sock is not quite high enough I agree - however I have a picture of Radfan as an old man - he was very definately much deeper chestnut than your pic then - thanks for posting them - My first horse was by him and the spitting image of her sire and those hind socks came through in exact detail! Best of luck in tracing the horse - can't help more I'm afraid |

Radfan was a nice horse, and I believe this was the 1973 show so he would have been there - you're right on with the timeframe. I found the results for that show and I'm wondering if the horse in my picture is El Hawa, by Sunlights Allegro - he came second to Haroun that year. El Santo was in the same class.
Does anyone have a picture of El Hawa to compare with my mine? |

Thanks for the suggestion, Paulette. I looked up Ormolu on the allbreedpedigree site and he didn't have white stockings all round. I'd been thinking Ludo also. I only have the show results in the AHS News for Syon for that year, so I don't have the full list of the horses that were there. I must have the show catalogues somewhere. I tidied up the house last winter so if I put them in a "safe place" I now don't remember where it was!
If I'm right that this was the junior stallion class, then the chestnuts in the ribbons were El Hawa (found picture, no stocking off fore), Dorial (not him, not enough white), El Santo (ditto), Crown Dynasty, and Fabran (whose sire Radfan had similar markings). If he didn't place or was in a different class then it's not one of the above. Would be easier if the AHS stud books hadn't switched to not including the markings for each horse back then! |

My first thought that is was Mehzeer but then the date didn't quite work if that is Syon Park. |

It's not Golden Domino, who I had hopes for - rear stockings are too short for him. |

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Of the prime suspects in the junion stallion class that year, the only one in the ribbons that I haven't been able to eliminate so far is Fabran by Radfan x Fabiola. I've been through the AHS News for that timeframe and didn't see any pictures that matched, nor a picture of Fabran. I do have a Super 8 video of the show and that may show his number, but I need to get it digitized (if it will hold together long enough after all this time!). |
