I'm toying with the idea of doing the Ullswater ride at the end of March (pleasure ride only) but not sure if it will be too difficult for my horse, bearing in mind that I can only ride at weekends during the winter, due to work (bum!) and livery yard opening times. Also, we don't have any hills near us so he is unused to a lot of climbing! I could take him out at weekends in search of hills but won't be able to every weekend.
Has anyone done the ride? Do you think it would be unfair to ask him to do this ride so early in the season? He will be almost 7 and at the moment is relatively fit considering the amount of work he does.
Ullswater is a fantastic ride I've ridden the 64km class there a couple of times and yes, it does have some climbs, but only one really big hill (Loadpot) from memory. Loads of lovely canters, and flat tracks and fields too Not sure if the pleasure route takes in the big hill, but just take it easy on that section if it does. Enjoy!
Thanks, that does sound good. Not sure yet as it will involve an overnight stay with the in-laws who live not far away and horsey B&B with a friend of theirs. But it does sound worth the trouble!
