Had a message at luchtime from the YO to say that my stallions were in together. Got up there to find that Roupert was indeed in Baggy's field, and the two were as happy as Larry with not even a tiny nibble out of anyone's rugs. In fact, Marimbah tried to stop me taking Roupert back to his own side of the electric fences!
Now the mystery - the fence gates were still up, and all the fencing intact. I can only think that Roup somehow got under the tiny section of single-strand fences near the hedge. It's been like this for nearly a year, and he's never bothered before. Possibly he was scared by the bangs last night, and went to Baggy for comfort (Roup escaped unharmed when his shelter tree was hit by lightning years ago, but has been afraid of very loud bangs ever since).
They were so happy together that when we move them to a field away from the riding track and hence mares, that I am thinking of turning them out together and seeing how they go on. They were in the same field until they had to be parted when Roup injured himself when they were three, and have lived together ever since they were born (10 days apart) so we will see how it goes.

Either he jumped it or, like my childhood pony (Arab x New Forest), he crawled underneath - we saw her do this under a 2 '6" section of post and rail fence when the Hunt met in the farmyard where our horses were kept and she very definitely wanted to join in (- she was still contained by a paddock after she achieved this, and didn't actually get her freedom and join them)
If they are happy together it seems a shame to seperate them, we have two welshies x tb's (geldings since we got them as 3 year olds) who came from the same herd, and although they have had various periods of seperation, are utterly devoted to each other when they are reunited. |

I also would think he jumped, they can jump incredibly high if they want. Since they've grown up together and seem to be such good friends I would definitively try to put them together if the field you are talking about is far enough from mares.Maybe just be a bit more careful in spring but at least they'll enjoy company :) |

The only time our stallion escaped from electric fencing he crawled under, I've heard of ponies learning to roll under. |

Well, they were back in together again this morning and quite happy when I went up! Have discussed it with YO and she thinks it's worth trying them together when we move them away from the riding path, so there could be two cheery chappies in the offing!
I think Roup jumps over the first fence, then gets *under* the one single strand in the second fence!

they want to be together!!! Bless them Pics please (2 of our stallions live together, they were same foal crop but separated and reintroduced as 2yos. We keep them where they have no horses to 'fight' over of course, but they are so content.... both big wimps really!) |
