Didn't want to jump on the other thread about weight carrying, but it has prompted me to ask this question which I often ponder about.

I have read/heard many times of course that Arabs have denser bone than other breeds and therefore can carry more weight than you'd expect for their build, but there must be a limit? And doesn't it depend on other things like ligaments/tendons/muscles etc?

How much weight would you think an average 14.2-15.0 hh Arab could carry?

I'm not sure about 14.2-15.2 but my little mare who is 14hh and 22yrs old has carried up to 11st11lbs over Exmoor (Golden Horse Shoe Endurance Ride) and next Sunday will be doing the Arab Marathon.

She has been well placed or won a number of Race Rides.

Weight also depends on how you ride. A light weight rider can ride heavy , as much as a heavier rider can ride light.

Pauline, I so admire that mare. You posted a photo of her once and I thought she was just gorgeous! And her being 22 and still so fit inspires me with my late start, who is just getting under saddle at aged 13!!!

If you do a search on here there are loads of threads on what an Arab can carry, (including in the archives) but here is one of the more recent ones

I think it really depends on the horse on how they are built and how much muscle tone they have, I have known many arabs that carry 11 to 12 stone, many in the show ring do as men are riding and even a light weight man must be abot 11 stone, as someone else said the way you ride can make a huge difference if you have a nice light independant seat you will be easier to carry.

Thanks everyone and thanks for the link Callisto. I thought there must be previous threads on here but I can't be searching properly as I just seemed to get a load of random threads, most of which had nothing to do with weight carrying, when I tried.

Interesting that 'up to 11 or 12 stone' has been mentioned a couple of times. I suppose that is more than you might expect for a lightly built horse, but still isn't very heavy really is it? My OH weighs 14-15 stone and I wondered whether any large Arabs existed that could carry that much weight. Just ruminating as he has a horse (ID x) so not looking for an Arab, I just wondered whether there was any possibility he could ever get to experience what it's like to ride one! I think it's very sad that he might never have that feeling lol.

Ours will carry 14-15 stone without a problem, you have to remember they were the horse chosen to carry the Bedouin warriers in the desert...
'the ancient Bedouin tribes practiced a form of desert warfare called "Ghazu," consisting of short raids upon neighboring tribes mounted upon tireless, fiercely loyal steeds.'

Yes but were the Bedouin Warriors built like our modern men and weighed 14-15 stone?

My boyfriend is 6ft 3, weighs 13.5 stone normally and 14.5 stone when seriously muscled up and weight training. There is no way I would put him on Shesky who is 16h crabbet x egyptian (or would have put him on Pasha 15.2h polish x russian).

I do think it has alot to do with what they are use to as well, as obviously, even though Shesky is 16h and capable of carrying a bit more, he is only used to 9.5 stone on a regular basis... I can always tell in the ring when a judge is a bit too heavy for him as he behaves himself lol!

unfortnately i have recently put on weight taking me up to 12 and a half stone, and im 5ft 3.

i have backed my 4 year old arab gelding who is 15.1hh and well built, he has been fine with me doing this, and still knows how to prance and carry himself proudly.

I am looking to lose 2 stone as i want to do the ridden showing next year and to look good on him. I do ride light i am very light with hands seat etc, despite my weight.

Think it depends on the horse, i am overweight but dont class myself as big, and i know my horse doesnt see me like that

here i am with the lad

That is a very interesting thread Linda, thanks for the link. When people talk about height and weight of riders on small arab type horses I always think of William Fox Pitt on Tamarillo......

I am about 10.2 stone (if I got the converting right, used to kilos and centimeters here)and Armagheddon carries me without any problem, plus the saddle...in fact, my YO who's a horse trainer and a very light rider but not a very light man at about 14 stone plus also has no problems riding him!His first owner was a man I don't know his weight but he looked well built from pics and was riding him with a western saddle and never had problems even on day long hacks.

According to the official Olypmic Stats, William Fox Pitt weighs 76kg or 11st 13 no where near 14-15 stone as being discussed here.... Tamarillo was also a 16.2h, not 14-15h. I guess he looked smaller as WFP is just over 6ft 4!

i am feeling shame faced after reading this thread as my mare is 15.1 well built russian/fench 10yr old and at my lightest i weighed 12 stone and am 5ft9 she never struggled with me but over a period of time i went up to 13 stone and she was also fine i have put on even more weight now and am pushing 14 stone mainly due to munching whilst bed bound after an accident but will not be riding her untill im back to 13 stone or under as i wouldnt feel happy to ride her at my current weight i also think it depends on what you do with your horse i think if i was working her hard it would be more of a concern but we are only happy hackers that tend to mooch around for pleasure on the end of the buckle with an occasional canter thrown in for good measure no more than twice a week ....

dont feel shame faced. We are all not fortunate enough to be slim (me being one of those less fortunate).

You know your own horse and im sure you would know if your to heavy.

My little mare is only 14.2/3 on a good day, was fine with me at 12.6 and 5ft7 so please don't get to stressed as that will make you want to eat even more!!!!

You have to remember things like your riding things and jacket, saddle, bridle and boots etc so in reality you horse may be carrying another 1 1/2 to 2 stone!!!

I did the Duken diet and lost 30lb and I am now 10st 4lb on a good day.

Depends on the type as well. The more modern arab compared to your Crabbet type would struggle as a weight carrier imo but my two are only 14.2 and would have no problem carrying a heavier weight. I'll dig out a photo of me on a modern arab also supposed to be 14.2 although think more like 14hh really but hard to tell when they are so slight of build and you will see the difference!

14.2 pure Crabbet completely takes up my leg and can go all day and then this rather sweet little stallion of modern breeding by Ajman Moniscone who I don't think would carry anyone for miles across the desert but he was very lovely despite making me feel like ten tonne tessy.
