hi and thanks for replies in advance, my little boy Indie, 2 1/2 yrs old, has uveitis in again , but in the other eye this time, has anyones horses suffered with this? reading lots of items on net, im scared he will lose his sight,,can anyone share some personal info on this and what can be used pref herbal to help it from reoccuring, thanks deb
I am so sorry that your baby is suffering from this painful condition.. its dreadful. It is often prefixed with that awful word...recurrant..because it does.
My sisters horse had Uvetis when we got her and my sister batteled with the drugs which were effective. The most useful thing she taught Ruby was 'head down' this automatically calms horses and made getting drops in much easier..
It really is one of those conditions where preventation is better than cure. Things which make a real difference are the wind, how bright and sunny it is and flys We have used a number of different fly veils over the years and the best ones are the ones with UV screening and she wears them whatever the weather. by stabeling during really bad or good weather she has not had an attack in the last 5 years but you must be ever vigilant and not think it is gone.
It is also a really good thing to test your boys pupil reaction time, if you get a feel for how quickly the eye responds to a bright light you can spot the signs early and get treatment.. if your vet is kind he will do what ours does and every year replaces our bottle of maxitrol because speed is of the esence in treatment.

thanks suzi, my boy is never stabled, but has worn a fly mask since the 1st episode in may, ive only just removed it, and then it appeared again, so looks like he will be wearing it in most weathers now,, i do natural horsemanship, and he has been a fabulous student, i dont even need to halter him to check his pupils with a torch or to put the drops in,, even the drops (atropine) which make the pupil dilate, which apperantly sting,, even the vet is amazed at how good he is,for an anglo arab,,95% arab,, ha ha,,
the worse thing is that this is now affecting his other eye, so just wondering if it always changes sides like this?
I have known it too but Ruby only gets it in one eye. Ironically the horse my sister used to ride lost one eye to this disease..he then got it in the other eye and his owner decieded to PTS, it was very sad. Managment really is the key...Ruby had several episodes before she went to wearing the masks full time. Ours are stabled at night from Nov to March and this is the only time she gets a break from it...my sister does have several so she can keep them clean and they are different fits so they dont rub.

A lady i worked for had a horse with it, he had special fly masks with patches over one eye to stop the light getting in i think she made them herself just by sewing silky material onto the mask, i suppose it depends if you want to block out his sight in one eye or not but he still went out in the field without any ill effects and managed fine.
