Just been enjoying my lovely new Arab News which was delivered today until I came to a "stop press" informing us of a change of venue for WALES and West show 2013. It is now to be held at The Hand which is in North Somerset!! This a Welsh show and has been for over 30 years -were any Welsh competitors actually consulted on this move. Surely if a move was deemed necessary then what was wrong with The Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wells?? The argument that competitors would not travel is absolute rubbish-at next weeks Royal Welsh show entries come to Wales from as far away as Scotland and Cornwall etc etc.

As a joint founder of this show I can assure you that it was never conceived as an exclusively 'Welsh' show as the name explains (Wales and WEST) The title was chosen to encourage competitors from both sides of the border and it's date was initially the day following the Arabs at Devon County so that people could come up the M5 and stay over to break their journey and enhance entries.
Many years ago there were discussions about moving to other venues, including Builth Wells and then, as now, the majority felt that the entries from the other side of the bridge would not trek, on rural roads, that distance from the motorway network.
The organisers have had increasing problems with the showground and in reality probably had little choice but to move and without doubt, for facilities and access The Hand is the only obvious choice.

PS. The Royal Welsh no longer have Pure Bred classes due to lack of entries!!! |

The Welsh Arab Group have run this show for many years and yes I do know the origins as I was a treasurer during the eighties. The showground at Crick has been much improved over the last few years now known as David Broome Equestrian Centre with a beautifully surfaced arena, improved stabling and catering facilities-okay no indoor arena but on how many occasions has the show been cancelled due to bad weather? My reference to competitors travelling to the Royal Welsh was not to the Arab classes as these have diminished in all parts of the country and many shows have cancelled the Arab classes due to lack of support. In no way has the Wales and West Show outgrown the current venue as this years entries show so please why if it broke....? |

I agree with Abi, slightly further to The Hand for us but the facilities and stables are well worth the extra travel. |

Nashiba,
At no point has anyone suggested that W&W Show has outgrown the Crick showground but mounting problems (which are not my place to discuss) mean that much as everyone would like to continue there it is simply not a sensible option.
Regarding choice of an alternative:
Builth Wells, inaccessible, Arab classes cancelled due to lack of numbers at Royal Welsh
David Broomes, on motorway network, Arab classes thriving at W&W
This proves that any new venue chosen must have good access as well as facilities.

Unfortunately this now clashes with cothibridgeshow bridge show for us. I am really dissapointed as we try and support locally and diesel costs have to be considered. The part bred sections need to be supported as we will loose them too in the current climate. One gutted person! |
