Iv been finding it interesting reading bits here and then about the temperament etc of the modern arab so thought id do an update of how I am finding my first arab as I dont think id have got an arab if it wasnt for this board

Well just any excuse to talk about my pony really

Bit of background for those that dont know, I posted last year on here as was thinking of getting an arab rather than my usual TB. Iv really struggled finding the right horse and thought an arab might be the way to go. So last august I bought my first arab, a 3yr old chestnut mare that had done very very little.

Well she is a star, if I could clone her I would. I keep reading bits about temperament wondering if iv just been lucky

Dont get me wrong she has her moments as any baby would, but I know its 10 years since I was doing a lot of babies(mostly warmbloods) but im sure they werent this easy.

She is just a pleasure to handle and takes everything new in her stride. This week iv leant over her(she thought that was a scratching game, had the bridle on(pops straight on no fuss) and had bandages on all for the first time

She is sensitive yes but not in a silly highly strung way, instead she is willing and quick to learn. She doesnt even spook about normal baby stuff. Coat shine spray she didnt even look at first time when I sprayed her mane and went straight over a coloured pole the other day for the first time without a look.

Interestingly, although iv not much arab experience to compare her with, I first gave arabs a thought after remembering a 4 yr old I rode years ago that was just perfect and willing and straight forward without been quiet. At the time I didnt have him because im not into arabs looks wise but with struggling to find the right horse none of that mattered now. She is just like him, surely that cant be conincedence and that upbringing has a lot to answer for. IV been lucky in the Mia hadnt been messed with

I cant help but think if won of the expensive warmbloods I used to break had her temperament there would just be no stopping them

Ickle pic(REALLY sorry about the mane I just couldnt get on with the long main arab look)

Their just the best horses in the world. So eager to please and very loyal. If I could clone my arab mare I would. She's the sweetest horse i've ever met and everyone who meets her loves her. She's always the favourite on the yard. Not a bad bone in her body. She's nervous a lot due to bad upbringing but never nasty.

Sounds like you are getting along just fine with Mia. I gree that if you get a young one that hasn't been messed around they are easy. The trouble is they are just as quick to learn bad things so if they have had an owner who didn't like arabs they might come with issues.

No need to appologise about the man4e, it is your choice, but the bandages! they are a bit jazzy lol.

So pleased that it is all going so well with your girl - great to have another convert!

She's looking very good (not sure about the mane though)

I agree totally. We bought a 13.1hh 3/4 bred Arab pony for my daughter when she was aged 6, having looked at literally dozens of unsuitable children's ponies. Some years later when I began to look for a small horse for myself, it had become a joke with all of my friends that I wanted a 15hh "Annie" (the pony's name). Well, I got that and more...the best ever temperament, chilled and so willing to please...I wouldn't have anything else by choice now.

ahh sounds like you're getting on really well!

Everyone at my yard has been really surprised how good my 3yr old is with everything. I've not had him that long but it def makes a difference when they have been well handled!

The other week when it was really frozen I took some water down to the field in containers in a wheel barrow. The water was making a slushing noise but manage fine to lead Baz as well, he was as good as gold.

Be sure to keep us updated on your progress

Hi Mags it's so rewarding when they take everything in their stride, she certainly looks very level headed with a lovely kind eye. Wishing you lots of fun and horsey adventures with her.

So glad she is doing well. She looks really pretty but sorry I have to say I think she would look even more lovely with a flowing mane...(just my personal view). Hope it all keeps going onward and upward as they say!Keep us updated.

Great to hear how good she is. If I remember rightly she is related to my madam, she too has a great temperament though not a laid back one,we had a kind of compliment yesterday that "she is quite sensible for an arab". Hope she continues to do so well.
