Interesting discussions on here about veganism and not eating meat or animal products. I'm not adding to the debate, but I just wanted to raise the point to vegans about making sure you have enough calcium in your diet. You see, my mum was vegan for over 30 years and towards her 60's started with osteoporosis. She died earlier this year through related problems. She didn't take calcium supplements and I do wonder whether this had something to do with the onset of her bone disease.
Just a friendly reminder/warning to all you vegans out there - look after your bones.

Thanks for the friendly warning KittyB, and I'm sorry to hear about your mum. Many people get osteoporosis in their 60s, or younger, and most of them eat meat and dairy. The highest incidence of osteoporosis is in the US and Erope, where the most dairy products are consumed. Dairy products are acidic, therefore the body robs calcium from the bones to recover the correct ph balance. There are better sources of dietary calcium, all vegetable based, which are alkaline and do not cause damage.
It is important to get enough calcium, but that is only part of the story. To be able to absorb calcium properly the body needs sufficient Vitamin D and a wide variety of trace elements and minerals, many lacking in the modern diet, especially if it is meat based. It is also important to eat an alkaline rather than an acid diet--all meat products are acid.
Sometimes you can't win no matter how good your diet is-- e.g. stress causes the body to produce excess cortisol, which is acid, so calcium is leached from the bones to correct the ph balance. Anything that causes calcium to be leached from the bones to correct the ph balance of the body caues osteoporosis.

Agree with Zan.And most brands of soya milk and other veg milks have calcium added products, without the acidity caused by milk so even better. After all,we are the only species drinking milk after weaning, and correct me if I am wrong, haven't heard of herbivores with osteoporosis.

Hi KittyB,

I went vegan for the animals and even if my health was affected i still would not have eaten meat/dairy as i couldn't put myself before them. But after going vegan i did some research on nutrition and found that it would actually benefit my health by going vegan.
Actually since i went vegan my ovarian cysts have almost completely gone, my doctor is mega impressed. This has meant that i dont have such bad acne and my bad stomachs that caused me to miss work have gone!!!
The only thing you can miss out on with a vegan diet is vitamin B12 which is present in animal foods but also vegetables. The reason a human might have a deficiency in B12 but not a horse or a gorilla for example is that they eat a certain amount of it because they eat from the ground. We tend to wash and sterilize everything we eat and therefore wash the good stuff away.

I watched these videos when i first went vegan and they are a bit of an eye opener. They are about nutrition so there are no nasty bits

I think the vegan diet is extremely healthy, from how I feel and what I've read. I just wish I'd done it years ago, for the animals and for my own long term health

Ghaleem, for those who eat Marmite there's plenty of B12 there!Otherwise, one can try a supplement, although I don't think you risk deficiencies if you eat varied and unprocessed food(lots of fresh fruit and vegetables)Since I went from vegetarian to vegan I feel like something heavy was lifted from me,I really feel lighter and cleaner,it's amazing.I also eat much more varied than before.I would advice anybody to give it a try for a month just to see how they feel, the change is immediate.
The videos are good,in the first one the link between dairy/acidity/loss of calcium is well explained.

Sorry forgot to say that you can get plenty of foods fortified with B12
Marmite are owned by Unilever, google them, not a nice company for the animals! Unilever also own John West, Walls and Birds eye. Unilevers health and beauty products are tested on animals too!

Kraft own Cadburys so if you were trying to never give any money to companys that exploit animals i suppose you wouldn't buy from them as Cadbury's is all about milk.

I suppose everything has been tested on animals at one point, even water!

The main thing is we are trying to do whats right
