was just wondering what size racing saddles most use on their arabs? I am looking into racing but i reckon my 18 inch will be too long when the time comes (horse is rising 3 so a while yet - will his back lengthen much more???)

Hi Gix
It will depend how much your horse grows and if he does lengthen in the back. I take it the 18" saddle is point to point possibly between 7 - 9lb at a guess without seeing it.
Saddles for racing are mostly on weight anything from 300g upwards, but when i have used lightweight jockeys on my smaller Arabs with lots of weight and large saddles, if the horse was very short backed it has affected their action if the jockey's fitness or style made their bum bounce on back of saddle. you can get 14" saddles that are around 6lb but i would recommend first having a go with what you have as its weather you and your horse enjoy it. The weight allocated for age or handicap would determine the size of saddle and their are plenty of racing people that could loan you a saddle at the races.
Hope this helps ?

Hi Adam.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
The saddle is for a tb which is the reason its quite long, it s my old TB's saddle. It was bought for point to point years ago but was advertised as a flat or exercise saddle. I think it weighs even less than you guess but as it never actually got chance to sit on a horse before now, I never actually weighed it. It is fully synthetic.
I will be racing one way or another, it is an itch both me and my mother needed to scratch, my mother was to lead me onto the course after legging me up, but she died before her time on october 30th, and it is something that I know she would want me to see through.
I used to work with race horses (arabs many years ago), and I used to exercise, but nowadays I wear specs, which brings me to my next question.....what are regulations regarding this and are there any goggles on the market that can be worn over the top of specs? I cannot wear contacts and I am thinking of having lazer treatment anyway, but way back in the depths of my fairly inactive brain is the question as to whether my eyes are suitable for lazer treatment and what do i do if they cannot be fixed?!

Gix - I THINK - you can get goggles customised with lenses. Might be a bit pricey though.(You certainly wouldnt be allowed to wear goggles over specs) No reason why you cant pull them down before you go down to the start instead of waiting till the tape is about to go up! You also might be able to download the rules and regs etc from the ARO site (or somewhere else).
Re saddles Ive always used synthetic exercise ones which are pretty flexible and bendy so the length has never seemed to be a problem.

thanks Moosie.

downloaded some regs from aro but could not find any info re specs but then I only had a quick skim over, got the docs saved on HDD so will read up once xmas rushing around is over.
Are your synthetic saddles full or half tree? IIRC mine is a full tree so not very flexible. I have no quams about buying a new one when the time comes, but most of the off the decent shelf ones seem aimed towards the TB racing industry of course, so are on the longer side. I havent looked deep enough into it yet I suppose, it will be some time before he races anyway, he isnt even broken yet lol

Gix, got two and they are (I think!) both half tree. They are very bendy and seem to fit anything. On the negative side theres not so much to sit into if needs be
Re the spes Im absolutely certain theyre not allowed under any circumstances. The person Im thinking of couldnt do contats either which is why she had the customised goggles.
Good luck
