got down field this morning at 5.30-6, luckily it was light enough to find one of my horses stood still(which isnt unusual) i hear you all say, then when she seen me and heard me call tryed to move but looked most bazarre, sort of backwards and in a circle, first thought whilst running over to her was that she had somehow broken her leg upon ispection she had got her belly strap which was tight wrapped around her rear leg, got rug off, she is quite swollen and a huge rub mark red and sore on rear thigh, swelling up to bum, she must of rolled and somehow tucked her leg in it, which i thought impossible as there was a 2 finger gap between belly strap and belly when she is stood up. she looked at me like but once rug off, walk off to eat breakfast and grass, bute and anti'bs later. ive never had this happen before ever!!

Has anyone else had similar experience?

Me too, it happened this summer to my arab mare, her belly straps were nice and snug and yet she still managed to get her back leg stuck through, not sure how she managed, luckily there was no damage done, not sure what can be done to prevent this happening again as the straps were tight to her tummy, i think she may of done it rolling.

Happened to me a couple of times to me. Now I do the tummy straps up relatively tight. I had to run and get some scissors so now I always keep a pair handy lol

I don't like turnout rugs at all, but they are a necessary evil in our climate, particularly with all the rain we get. My lad sliced open the inside of his upper hind on the leg strap buckle, the one you use for lengthening/shortening the strap. My mare hates the restriction of a rug. I have been using one with an extended neck for her in the winter, but I think it gives her neck ache as she has a high head carriage and it must press on her neck unless she has her head down grazing. She always puts her ears back when she sees the rug coming. I wish I could find one that she doesn't object so much to. I've currently got Weatherbeeta and Amigo, but have tried allsorts of different ones. Shame our climate isn't a bit more temperate.

Our Sec A mare managed to remove her fly sheet, was found in a tangled heap in the field, all straps still fastened, no idea how she did it!

Yup - rescued neigbour's new pony from a fly rug I had previously thought was a bit roomy. Must have rolled/lay down and got a hind leg through and had been like it a while. Poor pony was rubbed and swelling - no harm done long term, but so easy done really

Kitty B, would she be better in a rug with a removable neck? - more flexible than an all in one rug.

I liked the chaskit spider system which I think makes it harder for them to get their legs through when rolling, but sadly they don't make those rugs in the UK any more.

Never forget finding my sisters horse in just the NECK part of her combo rug!! She had totally trashed her FAL rug lying in a heap in the field, inside out! She only gets budget rugs now!

Do hope your mare is recovering from her tangle

Everyone in my life brings me happiness, some by arriving others by leaving.
