Well as my connemara x mare is off work and haven't been able to compete with her since I bought her i'm seriously thinking about showing my purebred arab mare but I don't know a single thing about it. Although all her 'relatives' are champion show horses apart from her dad who's a racer she has pigeon feet so is there any point showing her? Also how do you get the manes so perfect? My mare keeps losing the bottom of hers. Can anyone enter shows and what are judges looking for? It would be in hand showing in scotland.

If you want to show her for fun....then go for it!
Judges are primarily looking for conformation, type and movement i.e. looking for the horses closest to their own idea of the perfect Arab so all judges will have their own ideal in mind.
It goes without saying that she should be immaculately clean, a little clear baby oil around the eyes/muzzle to enhance features is permitted, and CLEAR hoof oil/baby oil on the hooves, chalk on white legs is allowed. No other make-up is allowed, nor disguising of blemishes.
Purebreds should be shown in an in-hand bridle, mane and tail full and untrimmed. She should trot out freely on a loose rein (as fast as you can run, to show her stride)! She should also stand squarely. If you're at a local show, they'd be rather bemused if you did the extreme posing and hyped-up twirling - so show as you would any other breed!
You should wear smart trousers and a shirt - you must have seen photos on AL of horse/handler combinations in hand?
I'm sure other posters will give more in-depth information. Caryn (Occasional in-hand handler) |

Agree with everything that Kharidian says, with the bottom of the mane thing I have the same trouble, you can buy the cut away rugs but they are not cheap, when you look at horses at shows very few have a perfect mane and tail, look on the Sweet photography site and you can get an idea of what the handlers and horses wear, good luck and have fun. |
