Last year my horse insurance with NFU went up 20% - I had had a big claim on one of the horses but cover for everything had gone up on all 3 horses individually - on querying they said it wasn't due to the claim (that just changed the exclusions) it was that all their insurance had gone up. I stayed with them since they've always been good.
But now I've just received this years renewal, with 1 less horse as I've loaned one - and each has increased again by over 30%!!! Now well over £1000 for 2 horses - it was less than that when I had 3 horses with them!!
I can't keep absorbing these massive increases so might see if I can shop around. Petplan seem to have slightly more reasonable quotes (although with a 2 month discount so maybe only for first year) as do SEIS and the broker Four Counties are very reasonable - anyone used any of these?

I'm the same and also have the car with them. The increases have been just ridiculous. I phoned and asked them why everything has gone up so much and they said it's because of personal claims made against them for accidents. Thank you 'no money no fee' let's claim everything we can lawyers and people. There is always a knock on effect with everything.

We live in a litigation society and it is the insurance companies that take the rap, meaning we pay through our premiums. Just think what those lovely rioters will cost us next year |

NFU appear to be the worst this year for hiking up the cost of insurance. My car or should I say roller skate insurance literally trebled and this was with full no claims !! Needless to say I switched to a more affordable option... |

I use Pet Plan, Flash costs me £25.00 a month. Magic, Fey, trailer, and dog are about £100.00. Was insured with Churchill for the 4wd and this year they doubled the premiums, now with Hastings!! Iam sure the cost has gone up because of ever increasing 'ambulance chasers'. |

My insurance with NFU went up from £26 pounds a month to £52 presumably because I claimed for Mirshid's fall on to the road (bashed knees), got other quotes again in the £20's and went back to NFU asking them to match it and was told they don't price match, it annoys me after 9 years of loyalty they do not even try to help just let you go elsewhere yet actively promote deals for 'new' customers, it's time they started to recognise their old customers! Now with KBIS, £28 for the same cover |

Have to second the bad report on E&L - worst insurance company I ever dealt with. Took us 7 months to get them to pay up on a claim - in the mean time, I had to cover a £2000 vets bill!!! They came up with loads of excuses. Best one was we were making 2 seperate claims, which was a load of tosh! At the end of it, they slapped so many exclusions on the policy we had to get a letter from the vet to confirm that the exclusions that had been put on were not anything to do with what we had claimed, or infact related to any medical condition the horse had at the time, or indeed had had in the past, to enable us to get insurance elsewhere without the stupid exclusions.
Insurance for everything has gone up - just got the renewal for my little Citroen C1 - paid £300 last year, the same company wanted - wait for it..........£800 this year!! No claims and 2 years NCD. Needless to say, I went else where and am paying £360 instead (this was the cheapest by a long shot!) Dreading our other car for renewal - Paid £200 last year, few quotes so far through comparison sites are all over £280 - Most in the £400 bracket. Never made a claim and have full NCD!

I'm with NFU and last year my premium went up by £2 after being with them for 9 years and although i have claimed in the past and had very good service from them, it's been 2 years since i last claimed. Now any illness/injury i have claimed for or NOT claimed for that they have been treated for prior to last years renewal they are no longer covered for. This year my premium has gone up from £57 a month to £97 for two horses and both my saddles and bridles. Apparently my increase and exclusions are also due to the fact that they are both over 12 years old as well as all the other factors. I Wish my monthly salary had increased by so much. I really don't how people are expected to absorb all these increasing costs of insurance, feed, bedding, hay, vets bills etc as it really does take a lot of pleasure out of owning horses. I don't begrudge mine a penny but i seem to be working harder and harder to keep them in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed to and no longer have enough time energy to spend with them. I know it has always been an expenses hobby but it is now becoming ridiculously so. No wonder so animals are needing new homes or are being neglected.

Afraid I don't have a good word to say about E&L either, we had a horse colic, and was unfortunately PTS at the vets...they even managed to wriggle out of the disposal costs and made the whole experience many many times worse.
We have one horse insured with PetPlan, she has had a couple of claims including an extortionately priced MRI scan due to her just 'not being quite right/intermittendly lame' MRI didn't show anything and she completed a 160km ride a couple of months later...PetPlan paid out over £1k without hesitating.
I also have some insured with NFU, and I agree my fee's have gone up extortionately this year, and I will be shopping around. HOWEVER, yet again I have had a couple of (minor) claims go through them and they have always been excellent to deal with. However, currently have one going through for over £1k for a hind limb injury...so we'll see how I fare this time...
Liz (who doesn't claim for everything...but 7 horses and 15 years means I'm bound to have a few incidents!) |

E&L a no no here too. Pet plan I had to fight for my claim, then they had the cheek to renew with exclusions, after I had had my horse of a lifetime PTS, and after them demanding a PM after I had contacted them to let them know that my boy was being PTS. Was so so upset... |

I also had problems with E and L taking ages to pay out a claim for a kick. It was only £199 but they took forever and wanted to know which horse had kicked mine!! have to be balanced and say that a friend got a big claim out of them for a dead horse and lots of vet bills. However my vet's secretary told me they had a lot of problems with E and L.

I insure with Petplan Equine, I think it was about £600 p/a for Kes and they do have very good policies and as far as I know, they do pay out for treatment when needed. I have previously insured for donkeys years with E&L, their policies seem to be a lot cheaper but I have heard of people having trouble claiming. I would say that over the years I have claimed with E&L about 3/4 times, each time with no problem at all. But I would advise the bigger insurers like Petplan, SEIB etc nowadays My car insurance went up by £200 this year for no reason at all, I didn't claim in the last year, I even did my advanced drivers test!! (I know this is car not horse but still insurance). |

Well I'm glad to hear it's not just me and it's good to hear positive feedback for others like Petplan (and also good to know who to avoid!) - Thanks folks!
I've always been impressed with NFU's service (have been with them for 7 years now) but can't cope with their prices anymore so will be moving on I think.... |
