Thank you for the kind words, I feel truly blessed to have met her, imagine the things she could tell me if she could talk after so many years of life!

I am enjoying her company immensely.

I never expected her to look as good as that!! The mud fever can't be so bad to have all that feather still on.

Apparently they were coming up and giving her injections for it at one point (sorry have no experience of mud fever so am a little unsure of the details) but I haven't seen them in ages. There is absolutely nowhere in the field that shes in that could pose a problem with reference to mud as none of it is boggy so perhaps it was worse before she came to us and I know she suffers in the winter.

She does look good for her age doesnt she? No make up I swear!

She looks fantastic. What a lovely old girl
I was thinking about her this morning. Could you ring the riding school and find out a bit more about her? Maybe there is a reason why it has to be a last summer that isn't immediately obvious.
What a lovely old horse, worth her weight in gold.

I have been thinking that I should do the same, but I'm afraid that Cornish Mentality of "sticking your nose where its not wanted" could results in me losing her even sooner. My neighbour knows more than I as its her field but shes still recovering from her operation. I will try my best to find out more. Someone told me yesterday that theyve been talking about doing this for at least 5 years now...

Bless her shame she has not got another horse for company, and bless you Pheebs for checking on her if you hadn't made sure she had water she would have surely died by now, a really cheap way to get rid of mud fever is Daktarin athletes foot spray spray on everyday until its gone takes about a week, our mare had it really bad on one leg when we bought her and it god rid of it.
Can you not visit the riding school and speak to someone, leaving her without water is cruelty as far as I am concerned and the fact she is alone is really sad, I really hold my hat off to you for giving her some of your time and attention, if I had a spare field I would take her, I know she is old but she looks healthy enough seems a crime to just pts, please let us know if you find out anymore.

I will try my best to find out more.

To be honest I think even RDA would be too much for her, I noticed yesterday that she possibly has problems with her eyes/hearing as I made her jump on more than one occassion when she really should have been easily aware of where I was.

When their other horse was in with her she seemed less happy than she is now as I think he pushed her around a bit, to be honest the only time she seems distressed is when I leave and she paces the fence for a bit and calls out but she soon settles (I'll admit to hiding in the bushes and keeping an eye till shes okay again) so I dont think being alone is an issue.

As for the water, not sure if I said but they were relying on something that dried up/stopped producing water which is when me and a neighbour dragged an old bath tub up there and filled it up (and I top it up regularly)

Been trying to find out more and have been told that she has "various health issues" but will not be told more than that. By the looks of it her fate is effectively sealed. I will of course continue to fill the rest of her time with love and attention (&carrots!)

Pheebs, she will have a lovely summer with you, as we know, more than a lot of horses do. Hopefully you can make sure she has a peaceful end, I would contribute to that.

Bless you Pheebs. She'll be eternally grateful for all of this love & care you are giving her, regardless of how long the dear soul is being 'given' by the riding school. I think she looks fabulous for 38.
Good on you.

Hi Gerri

Sorry haven't updated in awhile had a manic week and things are slowly starting to go back to normal. I've been really unwell plus received my A level results this week so had sleepless nights in the lead up to that. Have been helping my neighbour ease back in to taking care of her horses after her op but trying to make sure she doesnt do too much.

Shamrock is still friendly, cuddley, enjoying the carrots and seemingly content. I have learned that she has arthritus since I last updated which is apparently quite severe. I have been assurred that the owners love her and care for her, sounds to me like they just have too many horses. No excuse I know but lets face it we've all seen alot worse, and she's certainly in no danger when she's in the field next to mine as I check on her twice daily and would always notice if something was wrong.

Not sure when d-day for her is yet, trying to remain strong but i'll admit to my dear AL friends that I do often shed a tear for her.

If they really loved her and cared for her would they leave her there completely on her own?Is she on anything to ease her arthritis?she looks remarkably healthy and plump for her age,can she walk albeit stiffly? Why do they have so many horses if they can't take care of them properly? As you said,no excuse...

Jackiedo that is so kind of your to offer but I'm not sure it'd be fair on her to make her travel that far. We are right at the bottom of Cornwall so it'd take a horse box a couple of days to get there.

I just don't feel she's up to it especially with so many horses needing homes at the moment that could be a companion for you. Please don't think I'm not grateful for the offer and I know it's not really my decision to make but personally I don't think it's be what's best for her at her age.

It's a horrible situation. But as I've said before I have now accepted the situation for what it is and continue to make a fuss of her so she knows how special she is until her final hour.

Pheebs x

I do not agree with this situation but, I hope she will not be taken away.
Best case scenerio out of this terrible thing is, for it to be done in the field where she is now, so she does not become stressed in her last hours.

I will pm you Pheebs.

Just to clarify I do not believe this mare is intended for a slaughter house, she will be put to rest peacefully and correctly.
