It would be interesting to see ALers' horses....with a picture of their relatives to whom they bear a striking resemblance!

Here is Kharidian (Roger) with his great-grandsire the famous Mikeno. I was really struck by the likeness; what do others think?

Picture of Mikeno is from: Greely, M., (1975), Arabian Exodus, London, JA Allen

oh yes, definitely, the white on the face including the nostrils and chin.

Not sure if I can post on this thread or not, obviously I have loads of photo's of Kes but having never met his dam or sire I could only copy pics from somewhere, I thought it was a bit naughty to do that without permission?

Here is my mare Allegra Bint Djammal:

And her paternal great grandmother Velvet Shadow (Carmargue's Dam):

Not the clearest photos, but I think she looks very much like Velvet Shadow!

Thanks Lynda, I think so too! If you take a look at Andrew & Virginia's website, click on mares and have a look at Challon Salana, she is also the image of Velvet Shadow! They all have similar white markings on their faces and the same black front right leg! (Although Allegra's white socks are much shorter!)

By the way it was lovely to meet you over breakfast in The Malvern Spa!

ditto, lovely to finally meet you too
what is more interesting about this family line is, try to forget the colour for a moment and look at the horses, they have a wonderful and striking resemblance to Carmargue , look at the build of the bodies, the short strong backs the compact balanced bodies . they could all be taken for desert horses.

This is Ozzy's sire Omar el Sireff. I think they have the same body shape and also head shape. Ozzy's head is fairly straight when you look at it from the side. Hardly no dish.

Ozzy earlier this year. (he is standing with his front feet up hill in this picture)

I'd love him to resemble his grandad the lovely Cas Sabur, but sadly it appears only in colour... . I've been told Cas Sabur was the same colour as Ozzy when he was younger and took quite a while to grey out. Hopefully Ozzy will stay his lovely colour for a while longer yet.

Cas Sabur was black for quirte a few years. He was also quite fine and narrow with a stunning head. I was very tempted to use him on a big mare I had who needed a prettier head but decided the foal might be too fine with a plain head! With hindsight I wish I had as he bodied up beautifully. I really like him.

My late mare Bazz-Swirl, not the best photo I know but she resembled some of her family quite a lot especially Kazra.

She had that same shape as most of them and its quite uncanny how she bares resemblance to some of the old mares on her pedigree chart from the 60's!!

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/index.php?h=bazz-swirl&g=9&query_type=photos&search_bar=photos&inbred=Standard&x2=n&username=&password=&x=0&y=0

Had to post a link becuase I cant copy and paste the pictures from Allbreeds becuase i dont know hoe to do it or it wontlet me do it!

Mikeno is probably my all-time favourite Arabian and Roger's resemblance to him is striking. My lovely Anglo Autumn Light was a Mikeno granddaughter (by Marino Marini) and he also features several times in Red's pedigree (via Vlacq Khazad), along with Blue Domino and other gorgeous old favourites. The physical resemblance is not so obvious as Autumn was a bay Anglo and Red is a bay part-bred, but Mikeno is certainly there when they are in Arab trot and canter mode.

Garnet,
Unfortunately I never met Mikeno (aka The Dancing Stallion) but his son, Mikhan of Pulpits (Roger's grandsire) had the best movement I've EVER seen, to this day; he is MY all-time favourite Arabian!

It still gives me goosebumps when I watch a video of him at the Nationals in 1985(?) achieving Reserve BNC to Ralvon Elijah (beating Hanif etc in the veteran class to get to the championship).

He was such a kind stallion too, always handled (in a rope halter) by teenage girls such as myself. Believe it or not, there was only a chestnut paling fence between one of his paddocks and a bridleway and he was perfectly safe.

Caryn, how I envy you having known Mikhan of Pulpits! My first National Arab Show was 1987, the year we had Autumn Light, and by then there were very few of Mikeno's offspring around. I think Paguerra was probably the last one to be entered in the Veteran Stallions, and I remember being terribly disappointed because he wasn't forward on the day - this would have been quite close to the end of his life. It always surprises me that we don't hear more about Mikeno breeding even now, given his wonderful reputation, so it is good to see that you are keeping his memory alive.

Garnet, My late YO would have been bursting with pride to hear you say that. Khan was Hilary's pride and joy - apparently she was once offered a blank cheque to sell him - there's no way on earth she would have done so. He was the first stallion I'd had anything to do with as a 14 year old (me, not him) who knew next to nothing about horses in the 1970s. He was foaled in 1966 and Hilary bought him as a weanling/yearling for £125.00 when all the other colts she'd viewed were £75.00! Unfortunately he died in 1990 of a ?liver abscess at the age of 24. He sired some amazing purebreds and also stamped quality and versatility onto his foals from a variety of mainly unregistered pony mares.

This is El Zarina and her son El Zafaar........she has certainly put her stamp on him, they even have the same little fetishes i.e. they both love the insides of their ears scratched, sends them all gooey.

Fab thread Caryn, isn't it amazing how some horses put their 'stamp' on the babies?! It has had me looking back through Sunnys lines, I spent ages looking for a pic of his sire as I have never seen him & at last tracked one down. Thankyou to Jane of Welsh sport horses, where he last stood.
