Week of sheer misery for us. Our beloved Arabian stallion, Nivalis, had to be euthanized on Tuesday because his chronic laminitis condition had deteriorated. Our vet gave him a lethal injection - it was very quick and I know he didn't suffer. Brian and I were the last he saw before he went down. He was buried on Wednesday everning in a quiet corner of the stallion paddock. I shall plant snowdrops on his grave, because he was named for the snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis. Goodbye, brave, noble spirit. Assalamu alaikum, Nivalis. Peace be upon you.

Lesley & Brian I'm so sorry for your loss. The bond that you shared with him was amazing - always remember visiting your yard & Nivalis showing off with Brian.
Our thoughts are with you at this very sad time. |

I forgot to say - a sad thing (another one!)happened yesterday. The other horses were out in the far field when Nivalis was being euthanized and also when he was being buried. Yesterday Tiffy - the mare with me in my profile photo, who was Nivalis's girlfriend - came to the yard gate and whinnied out to him, as she often does. When there was not answering whinny, she just stood there for a few minutes hoping he would answer, then with a dejected look moved away. I had debated whether or not the other horses should be allowed to see N.'s body, but in the end, for various reasons, it wasn't practical. I wish it had been, though - there is evidence that horses cope better with the loss of a companion (which Tiff was to Nivalis) if they can see the body. I just don't know what would have been best in this situation.
To make things even worse, one of our cats got out last night and wouldn't come back in (he'd come so far in then dart out again, as they do - and in the end I just had to go to bed and leave him to come in by himself (left the cat flap open where I usually close it, and kitchen door closed to the others couldn't get out. Got a phone call at about 3 am to say he'd been killed on the road (our telephone number was on his name tag). What else can happen? |

I'm so sorry about Nivalis, what a beautiful boy and now to lose your cat as well. Tragic.
The snowdrop story had me in tears, I will always think of Nivalis now when I see one. |

RIP Nivalis, you were loved to the end and had a good life. I am not sure that letting horses see their friend's body is the right thing to do. Animals will go away to die, I guess it is to keep the carcass away from the herd so it doesn't attract predators. I had Sammy for 29 and a half years (he was almost 32) and on his last night before I knew there was anything wrong with him he kept trying to go back down the field, something he never did. A couple of hours later he was obviously ill and a few hours later he had to be PTS on the vets second visit.
So sorry to hear about your cat as well, not a good week for you.
